โ€œcreating great men, proud to be menโ€

Mr Myles Hogarty

College Principal

The De La Salle College community are all saddened by the sudden passing of Faโ€™anana Efeso Collins.

A man of great integrity who was a champion for social justice.

I met Efeso on several occasions and was always impressed by his concern for the young men of our College and their families.

The community has lost a great advocate for their needs and a powerful voice for our Pacifika people.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord

May perpetual light shine upon him

May he rest in peace

Amen

When Saint John Baptist De La Salle founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools some 350 years ago, he insisted, on some very simple and significant practices, from his teachers.

  1. They must greet each boy at school everyday and use their full name.
  2. They had to discover where each boy came from, his family circumstances and his overall background, so as to know the studentโ€™s life story.
  3. He lifted their status as learners by addressing them as, โ€œGentlemenโ€.

Using this term โ€œgentlemenโ€ was about lifting the dignity and mana of these young men and raising their aspiration of themselves. We address our young men as โ€œgentlemenโ€ at the College for the same reasons and also as this word implies, a โ€œgentlemanโ€, must always display manners, respect and consideration for others he deals with every day regardless of their age , gender or background.

This description and our expectation that our students meet this standard may be seen as โ€œold schoolโ€, nevertheless we insist that the young men of the College must display these characteristics of a gentleman.

Males, both young and old are under the spotlight all over the world at the moment. Their behaviours, words and actions are under constant media focus and sadly at times, males are being collectively criticised for the poor behaviour of a small minority.

The โ€œgentlemenโ€ at our College will be the next generationsโ€™ husbands, fathers and uncles. We aim to instil in them that they must be great men towards their wives, children, nieces and nephews.

Gentleness, care and love for others must be seen now in their behaviour and character.

The dignity and respect that our Founder gave to the young men he taught is a fine example and inspiration for us all. I believe that our young men will become โ€œgentlemenโ€ if they are expected to do so, at De La Salle we will continue to demand this expectation of being a โ€˜Gentlemanโ€ from each one of them.

Thanks

Parents and young men of our Year 10 and 11 who attended the very valuable Parent Partnership meetings on Tuesday and Thursday this week.

To our Year 7 staff for providing a wonderful Induction programme for the new Year 7 students as these young gentlemen start their educational journey at De La Salle.

Summer Sports coaches who have provided sporting opportunities for our young men over the summer and winter sports coaches preparing their teams for the upcoming season.

God Bless

associate principal

Mr Dermot English

"Connected Community"

On Monday I was walking back from front gate duty when a Year 7 boy greeted me and shook my hand. I asked how he was going and he said โ€˜I really like this schoolโ€™. I asked him why and he said

โ€˜I like that Iโ€™m meeting new people and learning new things, but what I really like are the valuesโ€™

It says something that after only three weeks at the College this boy is very aware of the values and is already connected to this community, and I would say will remain that way for the next seven years.

In Week 2 we had Academic Counselling Day with a turn-out of over 90%. This was a valuable opportunity, which we missed last year because of the cyclone. We can feel the difference amongst the boys because families have already been involved in setting their goals and communicating with teachers.

Last night at the Year 10 Partnership meeting the parents were addressed by the Dean, but also by two parents, a student Academic Portfolio leader Juan Koti, and a recent old boy and ex-head boy Charm Tuala. There was also a group of boys who conducted a debate, so on this evening parents, teachers, boys and old boys were all contributing. This again is Connected Community in action.

Thank you to everyone who has made this effort to be connected as community for the benefit of our boys.

De La Salle Founders Day at John Paul College

Dear Families

With the season of Lent upon us, we are invited to renew our hearts as we journey with Christ to Calvary. For this to happen, we increase Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving. It is important to remember the purpose of fasting is to practice giving away earthly attachments while increasing acts of goodwill. It is not merely the act of fasting from certain foods while indulging in other foods!

In todayโ€™s world for young people, this may mean giving up TV, phones, gaming, social media and so on. Here is a helpful list of ideas for us by Pope Francis for our school and homes you may wish to adopt for your Lenten journey.

Like many in our South Auckland community Faโ€™anana Efeso Collins sudden passing was sadly received by our College community. A beloved son of South Auckland, Social Justice warrior and advocate, and voice for the vulnerable, Fa;anana Efeso was a passionate Pacific leader, who was an inspiration to us all. Efeso will be dearly missed by our community, We pray for his wife Fia and beautiful daughters at this very sad time. Eternal rest grant to him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace.

Scholarโ€™s Assembly

Our Academic Portfolio student leaders celebrated our studentโ€™s success at Wednesdayโ€™s assembly. The boys appreciated the encouragement and challenge from our guest speaker oldboy Pulotu Selio Solomon [Class of 1990]. Mr Solomon is a key manager in the Ministry of Education and member of Eke Panuku. He is seen here with the Academic Portfolio. Alista Mafileโ€™o, Sofara Feo, Mr Pulotu Selio Solomon, Juan Koti, Mr Hogarty and Prix Ete Ah Ken.

The boys presented a short video. Who do you dedicate your endorsement to?

Senior students and Assessment Calendars

All Year 11 โ€“ 13 students have received an Assessment Handbook. The handbook lists all the assessments your son will complete across the year. Most homerooms have gone through the exercise of listing out assessments and planning the timetable for the term or the year. Ask your son when his first assessment is this term. You can also access the Assessment Handbooks on the school website in the academic area. Parents will have also received a personalised list of Course Statements for their sonโ€™s classes.

NCEA Level 1 at De La Salle

Over the next few years, NCEA will transition from its current form into a new qualification. In 2024 the new NCEA Level 1 achievement standards are fully implemented. The Ministry of Education asked schools decide if they wanted to assess NCEA Level 1 or not. At De La Salle we decided yes. Year 11 Students at De La Salle will be assessed using the new NCEA Level 1 standards in 2024.

While NCEA Level 1 is not the highest qualification for more than 99% of our students we felt it was important to assess NCEA Level 1 to give our students the chance for success at NCEA Level 2 and above. We will be preparing them for exams and other external assessment, learning how to manage workload and meeting deadlines and planning for success.

In the coming years NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 will each become 60-credit qualifications. However, in 2024 all other levels continue as normal. New NCEA Level 2 assessments are planned for 2026 and NCEA Level 3 in 2027.

Changes are happening to the way NCEA recognises literacy and numeracy. From 2024, students will need to achieve new co-requisite standards to the qualification. In 2024, the literacy and numeracy co-requisites, which sits outside of the new NCEA qualification, will also become mandatory. These are online digital assessments. Learners will only be awarded an NCEA qualification once they have met the 20-credit co-requisite. Learners need to complete the co-requisite once only. Students who are currently studying NCEA Level 2 and 3 do not need to worry about the literacy and numeracy co-requisites.

Students will be assisted through the transition during 2024 and 2025 through achieving either the new standards in Literacy-Writing, Literacy-Reading, Numeracy, or gaining 20 credits from a small list of literacy and numeracy-rich standards.

Students in Year 10 will also have the opportunity to sit the digital co-requisite standards in either May or September. The college will only enrol students for the assessment when they are ready.

If you would like to find more information on how NCEA is changing you can go to https://ncea.education.govt.nz/

Sticking with sport during school years linked to academic success

At this time of Year students are starting training and trialling for different sports and teams. Every year I hear some students say that they are not playing sport this year as they want to concentrate on their studies. Students need to have a balance and leave time for all their responsibilities. However, we know that a student who keeps involved in school activities tends to do better in all areas of school. We encourage students to learn to balance the demands of being a team as well as managing school work. That is why we give students De La Salle Certificate points for extracurricular activities and that is whywe encourage all those students interested in sport, or any other activity, to get involved. This has been confirmed by an Australian study that has found that for young people a โ€œcontinued sports participation during school years was linked to lower absenteeism, better attention and memory, โ€ฆ, and higher odds of studying at university.โ€ You can read about the study here https://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2024/02/05/sticking-with-sport-during-school-years-linked-to-academic-succe.html

Celebrating High Attendance Rates

Our college is currently experiencing record-high attendance rates across all year levels! This achievement is particularly remarkable as it comes on the heels of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 lockdowns. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and sincere gratitude to both our students and parents for their dedication and commitment to prioritizing education.

Congratulations!

Your unwavering support and encouragement have played a pivotal role in fostering this positive attendance trend. By ensuring that your sons attend school regularly, you have not only reinforced the value of education but also instilled in them the importance of consistency and responsibility. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we commend you for your ongoing involvement in your child's academic journey.

As we continue to navigate through these unprecedented times, we would like to emphasize the significance of maintaining this momentum. Consistent attendance not only enhances academic performance but also promotes social interaction, emotional well-being, and overall student success. Therefore, we urge you to continue motivating your sons to attend school regularly and punctually.

Academic Year 7/8

Assistant Principal- Mr Herbert Tanuvasa

This week the boys are settling in nicely and getting used to the routines, but what is so good to see is the attendance! It great having so many boys excited about coming to school every day (even with a 5th wave of Covid trying to dampen the start of the year). Our afterschool programmes are alive with our homework club, basketball and softball programmes, and over 60 boys doing preseason rugby training. Finally, it seems the disruptions of the previous 3 years have come to an end (God willing).

Earlier this week Mr Wendtโ€™s Year 11 English class spoke to our Year 7 cohort giving them advice from their 4 years experience in De La Salle College. At the end of the session Mr Wendt invited the Year 7 boys to give the Year 11 class some advice. It was a great experience for the Year 7 boys to give advice to their Year 11 brothers who took the advice very well ๐Ÿ˜Š

Finally, we acknowledge the sad passing of Faโ€™anana Efeso Collins, a great advocate for the South Auckland community and with so much more to give. We offer our condolences to his partner Fia and his two daughters during this difficult time and stand with Father Martin and the Otahuhu Catholic parish in support.

In Christ

Congratulations to Solomon House- taking out Athletics for 2024

welcome to lasalle

Mr Chad Tuli- Service Co-ordinator

Talofa Lava, my name is Chad Tuli, and I am the new service coordinator here at De La Salle College. I am a proud old boy of the college finishing four years ago currently pursuing my bachelor of sports and health science. I am currently in my third year, and I plan to continue my honors degree by the end of this year. My goal for my role this year is to offer boys more opportunities and give them an insight of different future career pathways or what they would want to pursue after high school. Giving boys different service opportunities and placing them in a position where they can meet other schools and network with new people will allow the boys to be outside of their comfort zones and to learn new things.

  1. Rugby or League supporter and what team- Rugby league. My family are all huge league supporters and all played rugby league, so it runs in my blood.
  2. What is your favorite thing about working for De La Salle so far? My favourite thing about working at De La Salle, besides being an old boy, is redefining the real meaning and true value of being a Lasallian and what this brotherhood means. Tradition, pride and the rich history is what sets us aside from other boys' schools.
  3. Name someone you admire and why- Someone I admire is Dermot, who is the current Associate Principal. He inspires me to dig deep and strive for more to succeed in whatever we do.

Year 10 Parent partnership

by Mr U Hakeagatoa-ย Year 10 Dean

The Year 10 Parent Partnership event held this week in the MPC proved to be an inspiring evening for all attendees. With a lineup of esteemed guest speakers and presentations from various groups, the event aims to foster stronger connections between the school, parents, and the wider community.

Among the distinguished speakers were representatives from the Health Science Academy, who provided valuable insights into the academy's programmes and opportunities for students. The presence of the Moana Connect CEO, Jacinta Fidow, shared her dynamic perspective on educational initiatives and partnerships, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration in fostering student success. Connect Liaison Advisor Angela Calvert also plays a pivotal role in facilitating communication and engagement between the school and the studentโ€™s families.

Head of Curriculum of the school, Mr Doyle, addressed the families, offering valuable information and guidance on navigating the academic journey, particularly regarding NCEA Level 1. His insights provided clarity and reassurance to parents, empowering them to support their children.

The event also showcased the talents of the school's debate team, whose impressive performance not only entertained but also inspired parents and students alike. Their dedication and skill demonstrated the diverse opportunities available for students to excel beyond the classroom.

Closing the evening on a powerful note was Charm Tuala, a former Head Boy from the Class of 2022, whose impassioned speech seemed to resonate with all attendees. Tuala's words of wisdom and encouragement served as a reminder of the real impact of education, and of the potential within each student to achieve greatness.

Overall, the Year 10 Parent Partnership event was a resounding success, strengthening the bonds between the school, parents, and the broader community. By fostering open communication, sharing valuable insights, and celebrating achievements, the event demonstrated a collective commitment to nurturing the growth and development of every student at De La Salle College.

the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum

by Juan Koti Year 13

Juan Koti

I had the privilege and honour of attending the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum in January of this year. The forum was a two week out of home experience where a cohort of about 158 students stayed at one of the Auckland University Halls in the city. The programme was a very immersive and engaging experience allowing like-minded students to attend three-hour long university lectures on a range of subjects related to Technology and Science. The following photos are just a small snippet of the wide range of lectures and experiments we did at the forum.

Alongside these lectures the forum also provided opportunities for students to enjoy ourselves and to participate in a range of activities. These could include, laser tag, technical visits to organisations (such as the NZ police station or the TVNZ building), volleyball competitions, debating, beach day and explore Auckland day. The following photos were just a few of the technical visits and fun activities I did while at the forum.

In conclusion the forum was a life-changing experience for me that allowed me to make lifelong friendships with students my age from across New Zealand. This experience has not only given me hope but it also reconfirms my idea for my future goals and aspirations into going to medical school majoring in a Bachelor of Health Science or Biomedicine. This forum would not have been possible without the help and support from my physics teacher and Head of Faculty for Science Mr A Kumar and the support of Auckland Airport Rotary Club, so I deeply thank these people who made this experience possible.

after school rugby programme

New After School Rugby Programme at De LaSalle

by Mr U Hakeagatoa- Rugby Development

This week the after-school rugby programme had a successful start, engaging over 100 boys from Year 7 to Year 12. It is promising to fulfil the goal of getting more students involved in rugby and enjoying the sport.

The fact that the programme runs twice a week, offering structured sessions with various skill stations, is undoubtedly contributing to its popularity among the students. It's great to see that the boys are having fun and finding value in the activities provided.

Acknowledging the coaches and staff members who are dedicating their time and effort to run the program is important. Their support and guidance are crucial to making the programme a success, and they deserve recognition for their contributions.

Continued support and encouragement for both the students and the staff involved will help ensure the ongoing success and growth of the rugby programme. Keep up the excellent work in fostering a positive and enriching experience for everyone involved!

football on the international stage

Remember this name: Pesamino Ah Tong-Sefo- selected by CM Maestro Football Academy to participate in the 2024 City of Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Showcase last week.

This tournament is one of the largest international tournaments in the world. In the past the event has hosted over 500 teams from North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The showcase is attended by hundreds of college coaches and is one of the largest and most attended recruiting showcases in the USA. It is a great opportunity for Pesamino to showcase his talent.

Because of this opportunity, a scout attending the LV Mayor's Cup thought Pesamino could be a good fit for the Series A (the top Italian soccer league) professional soccer academy at Rome City Institute! Rome City Institute in Rome, Italy combine education and soccer at an elite level. Congratulations Pesamino!

careers & gateway

by Mr G Hobbs- Gateway & Trades Teacher

We are well underway in our first term now and the Careers Office is working hard to ensure that all of our students get really good opportunities now and then for their future.

The Career department is well underway with our Drivers Licences and also First Foundation have already begun working with some of our students.

We have also had visits from Ministry of Social development, The NZ Defence Force, Strife Mentoring and AUT. There are a number of students who are getting a benefit from these organisations.

Scholarship proposals are about to get started as well. Last year we had a record number of students who got scholarships last year, and this year we are aiming for more.

The Trades class has completed their Health and safety Course as well as half of the students completing their Forklift Licence. The first group were all successful and we are looking also for the next group to pass as well.

This week we had 30 year 12 students taking part in the Gateway and Warehouse courses. There was full attendance at all of the stores which was fantastic. Feedback from the stores was also excellent.

We have a list of over 20 students looking to do McDonalds Gateway. This is a very popular course as for many it is the first time they have done work experience, and the skills they learn on the job are really important for their future as well.

The Gateway programme is designed to strengthen the pathway for Senior students to progress from school to the workplace or Tertiary study. It provides students with structured workplace learning, across a range of industries and businesses, while they continue to study at school.

Students are given the opportunity to โ€˜test driveโ€™ their career choices, while gaining real-world experience. Gateway gives the students confidence to make smooth transition from school to work. The Gateway programme requires that students complete a minimum of 20 industry based credits.
