Like a Mighty Rushing Wind

“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” (Acts 2:1-4)

The birth of the Church on the Day of Pentecost was described by Luke as a, “…Mighty Rushing Wind…” in contrast to the entrance of the Holy Spirit that brings a new birth, a new creation when Jesus told to Nicodemus to, “…listen to the wind…..”(John 3:7-8) to understand what it means to be born again.

That, “…Mighty Rushing Wind…” that begins on the day of Pentecost has today in modern history given birth to the modern Pentecostal Movement that boasts of more than 660 million believers globally. – well over a quarter of the world’s Christians. By some estimates, the movement is converting 35,000 new followers each day. By 2050, that number is expected to reach 1 billion, or 1 in 10 people on earth. There are currently more than 180 members of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, representing more than 442,000 Churches and 85 million adherents. By the time this article is printed, the statistics would be outdated.

Among other factors, the Pentecostal Movement...

• Was born in the place of humility. Her greatest assets was her lack of “sophistication and culture.”
• Was clearly demonstrative and unashamedly supernatural. Like the Wind that came in Acts 2:1-4, it was loud, manifested, out of the world and humanly unexplainable.
• Was evangelistic and mission-orientated as defined by her birth to be, “…a Witness… to the End of the Earth.” (Acts 1:8)
• Was communal and united. God is the Father, Jesus is the Savior, and the Holy Spirit gathers them together.

Let us pray for God to send that, “…Mighty Rushing Wind…” again as we celebrate Pentecost Sunday this month. The gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church when we are all baptized in the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit.
