Military Museum, at the North Dakota Heritage Center, Bismarck, April, 21, 2022. (National Guard story and photo by retired Lt. Col. Shirley J. Olgeirson, N.D. National Guard historian)
The North Dakota National Guard Foundation and the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND) formed a collaborative effort to promote designing, fund raising and construction of a museum to honor the many achievements of North Dakotans in military uniform.
Informational briefings are essential to gather support and ideas for the museum planning which is still in the initial phases. The site for the proposed military museum would be an addition to the existing state museum on the capitol grounds in Bismarck. The N.D. National Guard Foundation has contracted with PACE Fundraising, Fargo, to conduct a feasibility study to determine the statewide “appetite” for a military museum. Conducted in May, this survey will evaluate the propensity for raising private funds for its support. The National Guard and the SHSND will seek approval during the upcoming N.D. state 68th Legislative Assemble in 2023.
Dr. Bill Peterson, director of the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND), expresses his enthusiasm for the N.D. Military Museum project after Brig. Gen. Jackie Huber, President of the N.D.
