Welcome Dustdevils!

Monday, Sept. 8, 2025

Dear University Community

  • Last week we hosted a successful Involvement Week, affording students an opportunity to look at the many ways to become involved in campus and community life.
  • Our Partnership TAMIU: An Alliance for Good is one such example that sees students’ partner with local community agencies in mutually beneficial service opportunities. This year, six community agencies have joined Partnership TAMIU, first launched in 2014.
  • Mob Fest this Friday at 5 p.m. at the TAMIU Soccer Field offers another opportunity for campus involvement and life. Dustdevil Men’s Soccer will be taking on the University of Jamestown, at 7 p.m. but you can also browse unique booths featuring crafts, desserts, merchandise, and services. Enjoy the game atmosphere and cheer on the Dustdevils. Mob Fest is where the TAMIU spirit comes alive!
  • Our City of Laredo Tennis Complex at TAMIU, in addition to being recognized as one of the nation’s Outstanding Facilities by the U.S. Tennis Association, is now hosting College Night every Tuesday from 7 – 8:45 p.m. for enrolled students, free of charge. You can practice and socialize at the same time!
  • Meet our new Dean of the TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Marcus A. Ynalvez. His appointment marks a new chapter for TAMIU’s largest College, led by a scholar whose global journey has been grounded in rigorous inquiry, teaching excellence, and a lifelong dedication to creating positive social transformation.
  • Among the new faces on campus this Fall, we’re welcoming 32 new faculty members who are leading learning and research here. Meet them!
  • Continue to exercise caution and patience with loop construction that is progressing at our University Boulevard Entrance. Lanes have shifted to the southernmost lanes only. If coming from the South, use Entrance 3. From the north, take the Loop or Casa Verde. Continue to anticipate delays, slow down, exercise caution, and be prepared for sudden stops. This work is expected to be completed soon.
  • TAMIU offers paid student research assistant positions! Make this your time to excel and impress future employers too!

With the semester well underway, and your learning, as well, I’ll leave you with this from Albert Einstein:

"Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death."

Let’s Go Dustdevils!

- Juan J. Castillo, interim president

This Fall, TAMIU welcomes students and faculty with new leadership faces, including three recently appointed deans. Among them is Dr. Marcus Antonius Ynalvez, who will serve as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest of TAMIU's Colleges and Schools.

Caution: Lane Shift Made by TxDOT on University Boulevard

As you make your way to TAMIU on this first day of the Fall Semester 2025, please note that TxDOT has revised the entrance/exit plan for TAMIU’s University Boulevard effective Friday, Aug. 15 through Monday, Sept. 29, 2025, subject to change.

What Does This Mean?

Traffic entering and exiting the University via University Boulevard will now do so through the southernmost lanes of University Boulevard. The northernmost lanes are now closed.

What Can I Do?

As much as possible, those entering from the South (i.e., Jacaman) should use the preferred Entrance/Exit 3. TxDOT has erected additional approach signage encouraging vehicles to slow down in advance of Entrance 3.

Those entering from North of campus can still do so from Loop 20 or Casa Verde Road but should exercise caution given the new lane shift.

Important:

Anticipate travel delays. Slow down. Consider car-pooling. Always exercise caution. Be prepared for sudden stops.

Anything Else?

An enhanced University Police presence on University Boulevard will help ensure everyone complies with all traffic signage and laws. The University is continuing to coordinate with TxDOT and we’ve been studying traffic flows and peak entrance/exit usage. We will quickly pivot to those options as needed.
