Project Description:

Doral’s origins trace back to Doris and Alfred Kaskel, who purchased 2,400 acres of swampland just outside downtown Miami in the late 1950s to build a hotel and golf course. As the Doral community has grown far beyond its founders’ vision, so has the demand for outdoor activity space and recreational amenities. Sited on 82 acres with scenic lake views, Doral Central Park is a regional hub for recreation and special events, with activity zones distributed across the site. The circular drive surrounding the plaza accommodates accessible drop-off at the recreation center to the east and the aquatics center to the west. The aquatics center was planned for simultaneous competition and recreational use. Amenities include a 50-meter competition pool; an eight-lane, 25-yard instructional pool; a leisure pool; a spray ground; a water slide and multigenerational spaces. The recreation center amenities include a two-court gymnasium, a café and a fitness center. Architectural features include a welcoming curved canopy that adds functional value as a pickup/drop-off area and refuge from frequent afternoon rain showers. Upon entering the facility, the space expands to two levels. The fitness center above is encircled by the walking/jogging track. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows provide ample daylight in the weight room, multipurpose rooms and meeting rooms, along with spectacular views to the park waterway and landscaping..
