101 Creative Ideas on Using AI in Education book

I stumbled on a crowdsourced collection of ideas for integrating AI with education. Use the link below to learn more about how this free open book came to be developed by a group of international educators. Each concise page is an easy skim that has the author’s main idea, the context and the specific tools they used, and what they were trying to accomplish.

Zoom & Panopto: Exporting Video for iSchool

Thanks to Dale David for creating a tutorial that is specifically for those of you who record a Zoom session that needs to be shared with him. This pertains to you only if you need your Zoom recording produced into a web video or podcast. (For example, if your recording will get hosted on the iSchool’s YouTube channel.)

iSchool Faculty Recommendation: Create an eBook

Thanks to Dr. Loertscher for sharing his recommendation for an eBook creation tool. Dr. Loertscher and some of his grad students created an eBook titled Fixed/Flex Schedules in the Elementary School Library: The Solution. Take a look at that link as an example. Their eBook has been read all around the world, (over 20 countries!) over 2000 times! Thanks Dr. L for sharing a very cool tool (linked below) that could be used by other faculty or by students.

Virtual Worlds & VR Updates

In this month's virtual worlds and VR update I wanted to share three news items.

An Immersive ePortfolio

Kali created a custom animation for her ReadyPlayerMe avatar, and set it as a greeter in her room.

First, I wanted to share a virtual reality version of an ePortfolio created by none other than Kali Gifford, who is graduating with her MLIS degree this month. Kali has been indispensable to me as the iSchool Hubs Student Team Lead. Not only has she been a tireless advocate for multiple VR projects, done a great job representing the iSchool and co-presented on browser-based VR at conferences, but she's also been a stellar peer mentor this semester too!  I'm delighted that Kali will stay involved with VCARA, and our month VR Exploders outings. Take a look at the creative way she represents her MLIS learning journey in her Hubs room below!

iSchool Students Compete in Second Life Student Challenge

Fall 2023 Second Life Student Challenge

Second, two of our other MLIS students participated this semester in the first ever Second Life Student Challenge for Serious Simulations in the Metaverse. While they didn't place in the top three prize categories, Aisha Abdul Rahman and Shannon Broden both did a great job building exhibits for the challenge. The competition was fierce. A group of students in Turkey, pictured above on the left, took first place. There was a another group from high school that did well too. The event was a big success and plans are already underway to do it again in the spring semester.

Two Virtual End of Semester Parties - in Hubs and Second Life

The iSchool VR Party Room

Third, there are two virtual parties coming up. The first one is our little after party in a Hubs room, after virtual convocation. So that would be Friday 12/15/23 at 6pm Pacific. If you want to join in for that, check out the link to the party room ahead of time! VCARA is also hosting an end of semester dance party in Second Life at our FantaSea Dance Club. That's on Saturday December 16, at 12pm noon Pacific.

T3 Recap: Equity-Minded Grading/Ungrading

In case you missed it Darra Hofman and Taryn Reiner provided an overview with definitions and practices on this topic.

Remember, T3 Sessions are offered every semester. Review the schedule, and RSVP from the T3 Sessions webpage. You can also check out an archive of all recorded sessions in the iSchool Faculty Canvas course. Look for the module titled T3 Sessions and Archive. Email alman.sjsu@gmail.com with any questions about T3 Sessions.

eCampus: Your SJSU Technology Resources Center

Did you know that eCampus is the hub for all the technologies that are officially adopted for use at SJSU? Even though the iSchool has our own tech support department for our faculty, staff, and students, you should know that eCampus is a great additional resource (and I’m not just saying that because I used to work there!). You can find workshops for advanced use of Canvas tools, workshops and tutorials on video editing, additional options for multimedia development, tools for surveys, research, statistical analysis, and so much more. There are many things that are available just for faculty, but don’t overlook the resources for your students. Explore the links below to learn more.

See the full list of upcoming eCampus workshops. Note that workshop dates are listed at the bottom of each image on the page. You can also request to watch a recording of an eCampus workshop.
