Kenya Photo Workshop Trip Report for Tom Bol Photo Workshops

Big Cat Bonanza

The Masai Mara in Kenya is an outstanding location for Big Cats. They were abundant on this workshop: lions, cheetahs, leopards and serval cats. We spent all 8 days in a single area to take advantage of all the wildlife and maximize out photography time.

Cheetah and More Cheetahs

Cheetahs were all over this part of the Masai Mara. We saw them almost daily and photographed three different cheetahs bringing down prey. We watched a mother cheetah with four offspring stalking impala with two false starts and one successful hunt.

Great Migration

The wildebeest and zebra migration goes right though this area. We traveled to the Mara River to watch animals cross over in herds. They were not all successful.

Perfect Weather

Temperatures were very mild in September with averages around 75 degrees. We benefitted from several days of partly cloudy skies for dramatic sunsets and stormy backgrounds.

Non-stop Animals

We photographed all the wildlife you would expect to see in Africa: herds of elephants, zebras and all kinds of ungulates including Eland, Topi, Gazelles and Impalas. With breakfast and lunch often served in the field we had a few days of over twelve hours of photography.

Meeting the Locals

Our guides and the staff at Enaidura where almost all from the local Masai villages. We enjoyed learning about their culture and had two opportunities to photograph the younger warriors while on our safari.

Bird Life

Plenty of great birds to photograph on this workshop as well. We used pre-release to capture Lilac-breasted Rollers in flight and chased colorful Bee-eaters. Egyptian Geese and vultures were daily companions in the field.
