Valley teams combined to post an 18-16 record in non-conference matches during the opening weekend of play as volleyball returned to the courts over the weekend. This week’s schedule features 38 matches, including seven matches vs. Power Five opponents and three matches vs. AVCA Top 25 opponents (Belmont at #22 Western Kentucky, Drake at #17 Washington State and UNI at #20 Creighton).

One of the top offensive players in the nation continued to impress in the first weekend of her junior season. Highlighted by a career-high 28 kills in the win over Central Michigan, Cardona paces the MVC with an average of 5.25 kills per set. She added a total of eight service aces, putting her second in the league. Friday’s opener against preseason Ohio Valley Conference favorite Southeast Missouri State saw Cardona register a match-high 14 kills along with 9 digs, 4 block assists and 2 aces. Facing a 20-win squad from last season in Central Michigan, Cardona erupted for a career-high 28 kills while hitting .311. Ten digs gave her a double-double while she added 6 more aces and two block assists.
Libero Jada Wills put together a fantastic opening weekend for the Bulldogs. The senior tallied 76 digs, a perfect serve reception percentage on 60 attempts, eight assists, and a service ace. Wills’s digs total ranks first in the MVC and second nationally after the opening weekend and she was just one of two Valley players to average over five digs per set (5.85) over the weekend. Her 5.85 digs per set also rank fourth nationally. The Dubuque, Iowa native did her damage against three high quality opponents in No. 12 Marquette, No. 24 Western Kentucky, and tournament champion and host Dayton.
Lengacher registered 40 digs (3.64 per set) over Indiana State’s first three matches of the season, recording double-digit digs on two occasions during the opening weekend of play. She tallied a team-leading 15 digs in the season opener against Xavier and had 16 digs in the Sycamores’ win over Alabama State. Lengacher averaged at least three digs per set in each of Indiana State’s three matches, while her 40 total digs and 3.64 digs per set are the most among MVC freshmen. She also added four service aces, finishing with two each against Xavier and Alabama State.

Strongman served the final seven points of the match, the last six of which included five service aces. But Hickey showed this weekend that she can contribute on the attack as well. Hickey earned a start at outside hitter against ULM and looked right at home offensively, racking up nine kills to tie for match-high honors while hitting at a .412 clip. The sophomore, who did shed the libero jersey for a set at outside hitter last season in the NIVC at Ohio, picked up nine digs defensively as well.
Missouri State will host the 2023 MVC Championship, Nov. 19-22, in Springfield, Missouri, where the league's top-eight teams will battle it out for the Valley's automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
