Starting Your Semester Right by Emma Campbell

School is back in session! For some of us, school is just beginning or coming to an end with this semester. Freshmen have their first semester and seniors have their last before grad school or life after college. Maintaining your balance between school and life is super important. One way to create this balance is to set aside time for both. Do you have a job during the school year? Make sure to separate work from play. Once you get home, instead of scrolling on your phone, try activities or hobbies that limit your screen time and make you feel good! We've gathered some advice for your semester below!

School & Studying Tips

  • Feeling overwhelmed? Talk to a friend, family member, or someone you trust about how you're feeling. Did you know? ECU offers counseling on campus located near Umstead Residence Hall.
  • Stay in contact with your advisor to ensure your action plan is still on track.
  • Using a planner is a great way to remember important dates, assignments, and plan fun events. You can usually find planners at the school store or book stores near you!
  • Schedule time blocks to study for exams, but don't overdo it in one sitting, break it up over days. Try to study a little each week for each class, covering old and new topics to remember everything before a test or exam.
  • Writing papers? Don't wait until the last minute! The Writing Center is a great resource to help edit and organize your papers.
  • Visit the Pirate Academic Success Center, find a tutor, or join a study group for difficult classes.

Remember to Take Care of Yourself

  • Exercise at least 30 minutes once a day or whenever you can. Find a friend interested in fitness to help you stay motivated! Did you know CRW offers FREE group fitness classes? Check out the ECU REC App for the schedule.
  • Journal your thoughts
  • Clean up your living space or room
  • Go for a quick swim but don't forget to wear your sunscreen!

  • Dance party... actually proven by science to reduce stress and hard feelings
  • Meditate or yoga
  • Go on an Adventure trip!
  • Try any hobby you feel like you normally have no time for
