Year 3

Year 3 have had another busy and exciting week of learning! In English, we explored The River’s Tale by Rudyard Kipling. We discussed how the poem is written from the river’s perspective and identified the powerful imagery used throughout. The children created beautiful drawings inspired by the language in the poem before writing their own additional verse, imagining the river flowing through modern-day London. In maths, we have been practising addition and subtraction using formal written methods. The children also worked hard on using the inverse operation to check their answers and applied their understanding to solve a range of word problems. As part of our Connected Curriculum learning, we explored the issue of water inequality and discussed why some countries have better access to clean water than others. To help us understand some of the challenges people face, the children took part in a practical activity on the playground where they worked in teams to transport water from one end to the other. We also finished the week by introducing our exciting new DT project on pneumatic toys. The children spent time across all four classes, investigating different types of toys, exploring how pneumatics work and discovering examples of pneumatics being used in real-life situations.

Year 4

As part of our English lessons, Year 4 have continued rehearsing for our upcoming performances which are taking place next week: 4B and 4C on Tuesday 19th May, and 4E and 4SW on Thursday 21st May. The children have also continued their unit on biographies and have, once again, focused on the author, Michael Morpurgo. They have practised using a range of cohesive devices, such as conjunctions, various forms of the past tense, fronted adverbials and paragraphing to make their writing ‘flow’.  As mathematicians, they have focused on fractions and decimals. Some groups have practised calculating fractions of quantities to solve problems - some with more then one step. Others have compared and ordered a range of fractions and decimals whilst some have been learning how to subtract decimal numbers formally. In science, the children worked in groups to investigate which materials conduct electricity. They were presented with a selection of materials to test within their circuits and had to consider the importance of a fair test. They represented their results in a clear way and drew their own conclusions about which materials were conductors and which were insulators.

Year 5

It is unbelievable that we are almost at the end of another week packed full of learning and fun.   This term, the focus has been on angles and statistics. The children have learnt to measure and draw angles using both manual and online protractors and have practised finding missing angles within shapes. They have also developed their skills in reading, interpreting and analysing data in tables, applying the four operations to answer questions. In addition, they have explored line graphs, solving problems based on the data presented and in some classes, calculated averages using mean, median and mode. In English, they have studied the inspirational poetry of Maya Angelou and Amanda Gorman. They explored a range of poems, discussing how each poet inspires and communicates with their audience, before writing a personal response to a chosen poem. They compared the lives and works of both poets, recognising how each overcame adversity and used poetry as a powerful voice. The children also examined quotations from Angelou’s work to create inspirational posters and listened to an extract of Still I Rise to analyse its themes and record their own recitals. The unit concluded with a study of Gorman’s The Hill We Climb, where we explored themes such as cultural identity and completed comprehension activities to summarise its key ideas.

In science lessons, using their ‘Moon Diary’ homework, the children identified and explored the phases of the Moon, learning how and why its appearance changes throughout the month. They were able to explain how we see the Moon in the sky and demonstrate its eight phases. Building on their learning from spring term, the children explored the structure of Mayan civilisation, comparing it with that of the Anglo-Saxons. They researched the different levels of Mayan society, identifying key differences between them. They also examined daily life, making predictions and drawing comparisons with other historical periods they have studied. Through further research, they explored how social status was reflected in aspects such as housing, clothing and possessions, before creating fact files to show how men, women and children lived across different levels of society.

Year 6

As always, it has been a memorable and eventful week for the Year 6 pupils at West Leigh. Firstly, there was the small matter of SATs week to contend with! We are incredibly proud of the calm, mature and determined manner in which the children approached each of the tests. They demonstrated resilience, focus and positivity throughout the week, and regardless of outcomes, they should all feel proud of the effort and hard work they have invested over the course of the year. Of course, SATs week is about far more than tests alone. The children also enjoyed opportunities to relax, laugh and spend time together as a year group. On Tuesday afternoon, they enjoyed time together at fields where they were able to participate in a range of activities with their friends. Adding to the excitement was the official launch of this year’s Leavers’ Assembly preparations. There was immediate enthusiasm and animated discussion as pupils began to learn about this year’s script. It is already clear that they will be eager to throw themselves into creating a memorable and entertaining celebration of their time at West Leigh, when the time comes later in the term. Alongside this, pupils continued to engage enthusiastically with their wider curriculum learning, demonstrating that even during such a busy week, curiosity and creativity remain very much alive in Year 6. As scientists, they carried out an investigation involving blood splatter analysis (thankfully, it was not real blood that was being splattered!). We hope the children enjoy a well-earned restful weekend after all of their efforts this week.

Online Safety

Online grooming is a growing and deeply concerning threat, with thousands of offences recorded each year in the UK. This edition explores how offenders build trust with children through fake identities, flattery, gifts and group chats before exploiting that relationship. It also examines the rise of sextortion and how gaming platforms and social media can become gateways for harm. Beyond sexual exploitation, the guide highlights criminal grooming and radicalisation, helping adults recognise that manipulation can take many forms. With practical advice on spotting warning signs, creating open conversations and understanding the platforms children use, this resource empowers parents to intervene early and keep young people safer online.

Inspirational Person - Sir Ernest Shackleton

We were delighted to receive so many inspiring surfboard designs following last half term’s Showbie Challenge. The entries clearly reflected our Golden Values, and we are impressed with the effort and creativity shown. A small selection of the designs is shared below, but everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves. Prizes have been awarded to all participants — well done! We hope to see more fantastic entries again this half term. This half term, children have been learning about the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton and how he demonstrated the value of integrity during his expedition to Antarctica. When his ship, The Endurance, became trapped in the ice, Shackleton faced an incredibly difficult decision. He could continue pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming the first person to cross Antarctica, or he could abandon the mission to ensure his crew returned home safely. Integrity means doing the right thing — even when it is difficult, even when no one is watching, and even when it costs you something. Shackleton showed true integrity by giving up his dream and choosing people over success. He told his crew, “Our goal now is simple: everyone comes home alive.” Thanks to his leadership and integrity, every member of the Endurance crew was rescued. Showbie Challenge Although Ernest Shackleton did not receive a medal or award for his expedition, his integrity is what made his story truly remarkable. Your challenge is to design an “Integrity Award” that you would present to Shackleton. Your design must include:

  • A title for the award
  • A picture or symbol
  • A short explanation explaining why he deserves it

We can’t wait to see your thoughtful and creative designs! These can be uploaded to Showbie and some blank templates have been saved there to help you if needed.

Attendance

Well done to 6D and 6K who both achieved the best attendance this week with an impressive 100%. !

Outside Achievement

Florence (3M), Ronni and Ada (4B) recently took part in the MTU Finale Weekend, marking the end of the current competition season. All three girls trained incredibly hard and dedicated many hours to practising their routines in preparation for the competition. We are extremely proud of the effort, determination and teamwork they demonstrated throughout the weekend, as well as the wonderful support they showed for one another. Their hard work paid off as they achieved an impressive 4th place with their troupe, Urban Twirlers, in the Team Show category. Well done, girls!
