Notes From The Den Welcome back Cougars - Sept 2023

Dear Cougar Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! We look forward to welcoming our student community back into the building in just a few short days.

Our 3 day school week will consist of a Freshman Only Day - Wednesday, Sept 6th and two days with ALL students Thursday, Sept 7th and Friday, Sept 8th. We will hold special bell schedules for each of these days.

Our staff has been hard at work preparing for your return and we cannot wait to see your faces, begin to learn new names and connect with students and their individual interests like never before.

Please continue reading below for valuable information that will equip you for your return to school. Go Cougars!

Updates to ABC Class Periods, School Meals, Student Handbook & More...

Class Period Adjustment Reminder: We have changed the rotating class period from 7th period to 1st period. This change slightly altered the arrangement of class periods that meet on our A, B and C days.

Our start, end and class period times will remain unchanged: school begins at 8:45am every day of the week, and ends at 3:45pm M/T/Th/F. On Wednesdays, the school day will end at 2:15pm. Doors will open for student entry at 8:20am.

School Meals: Information about weekly menus and meal prices can be found online here. Families can access free meals by filling out a free and reduced lunch application linked here. Income guidelines have expanded, so all families are encouraged to apply!

  • Breakfast is served from 8:20am-8:40am
  • A morning snack is available during the 10 min passing period
  • We have an open campus during lunch, meaning students may leave campus to eat offsite if they choose

2023-24 Student Handbook: It is important that students and families have a clear picture of what the school wide expectations and policies are for our Cougar community. Students will review many of these topics in their first class meetings Friday, but we encourage families to read through the Student Handbook together as well. Families can find the link to the 23-24 Student Handbook on the right side of the School Information Page of our website.

Student Class Schedules: Student schedules can be viewed via StudentVUE & ParentVUE beginning Sept 1st.

  • We are still working to balance class loads so some students may continue seeing changes to their schedule through this weekend
  • Our expectation is that students will keep the schedule they forecasted for
  • If there is an error in a student's schedule, we ask that students review the MVHS Schedule Change Policy & Procedure sheet and follow the instructions provided to submit qualifying change requests beginning Sept 6

iPad Rollout - New Students & 9th Graders: Our media team has held two drop-in iPad deployment days this week. If your student did not make one of those deployment days, please plan to join us on Tuesday, Sept 5 between 9am-2:30pm. All students who have not picked up an iPad by this time should swing into the Media Center in the first days of school to collect and set up their device.

We have a fantastically fun first day of school planned for our incoming 9th graders on the Freshman Only day, Wednesday, Sept 6th. This day is designed to allow our newest Cougs a chance to connect with a student mentor, build relationships, learn about MVHS culture, get an extensive tour of the building and visit each of their classes. Freshman students and parents received a direct email with detailed instructions for Wednesday.

Taking Care Of Business

Pay optional fees (noted below) or remit payment for any outstanding fines online through the district TouchBase payment system. Parents must log in under each individual student account. See instructions on the login page for detailed instructions. Common (optional) fees are:

  • iPad Insurance $30 (click here to read about this low cost, 1 yr coverage and the $60 family cap)
  • 2023-24 Yearbook $50
  • ASB Card $25 (grants students free admission to home athletic events and potential discounted admission to other school sponsored functions)

UPDATES TO PARKING: There will be NO CHARGE for parking permits this year. Anyone who purchased a parking permit prior to this decision received a refund via the same tender they paid. Students do still need to complete the Parking Permit Form and receive a window sticker to park on campus.

Our photo partner, Dorian Studio will be on campus taking annual student portraits and providing student body cards during the first two days of school. Come prepared with your best smile on Wednesday (9th graders) and Thursday (10-12 grades)!

Families can purchase photo packages on the Dorian Studio website here.

Communication

Parent Directory Info : Did you move over the summer? Have a new email address? Get a new phone number? We want your updated info! We ask that ALL PARENTS log into ParentVUE to review your information and make any necessary changes.

Once logged in to ParentVUE, you can review your account info by clicking on the My Account button, located in the upper right hand side of the ParentVue screen. To update/change information, click on the Update/Enrollment button.

During the school year, communication to our families will be sent electronically via email. Please help us keep your information up-to-date so we can communicate effectively. The MVHS website is updated frequently to provide our school community with current information. Each MVHS student is given a school email address. Please encourage your student to check their school email frequently for important information.

Reminder: all students who plan to ride a bus MUST register for service. See details on the transportation page of the district website.

Return to School after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Ann Glang, PhD and Deanne Unruh, PhD, researchers from the University of Oregon (UO) and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are conducting a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of a return to school model of services and supports for students with concussion or brain injury. We are partnering with school districts in Central Oregon and Southwestern Ohio to select research participants among students. Click the link below for full details on how our district is asking parents and students to participate in this project.
