Year 3

It has been a busy last week of the half term. In English lessons, the children have been developing their reading skills through different text types. Our new layered reading book, This Morning I Met a Whale by Michael Morpurgo, has been introduced to the children. They have enjoyed learning about the character of Michael and making links with their learning of the River Thames. Maths has focused on multiplication and division, progressing onto word problems. Snork is available as a tool to use online to support your child with working out division questions. PE has seen the children following maps and using compass directions to navigate coned grids using different directions. This allowed the children to put their geography knowledge of maps and the skill of giving clear instructions to the test!. In our geography lessons, the children looked at the different courses of the river and suggested activities that would be suitable for each river stage. They justified their choices based on the features of the waterway and whether the activity would be suitable.  An exciting opportunity took place this week: some of the Year 3 children used our new VR headsets to explore rivers and take a closer look at the features from source to mouth. We would like to ask in advance for your support on Tuesday 16th June when we will be heading down to Old Leigh for our geography field study. If you are available to help, could you please let us know through the communication book or via email.  We wish you a very relaxing and enjoyable half term break.

Year 4

As the half term draws to a close, the children have been able to celebrate the success of their Shakespeare-themed performances to parents, family members and to the rest of the school. Their presentations were both informative and entertaining and the children should be very proud of themselves. English lessons have involved finding out about David Attenborough. In order to prepare for writing a biography, the children have sorted information about him under specific headings. Furthermore, they have used their skimming and scanning skills to research more information about his life. They have also practised writing using Standard English which is the skill they will need to write their final biographies after half term. As mathematicians, we have been consolidating formal methods of multiplication and division. Some groups have used their knowledge to complete fact families. Other children have solved multiplication and division problems, some with more than one step. In science, the children have investigated the effect of having various components in a circuit, such as multiple batteries, bulbs or wires, to create series and parallel circuits. They made careful observations, represented their results in the form of a table and concluded what they had found out. As artists, the children have continued their study about L.S. Lowry. In order to produce their final piece, the children have mimicked his style and experimented with using watercolours. They have planned what their final piece will look like: considering what rides, buildings and people will be in the background, middle ground and foreground. Reminder: For the first three week after half term, Year 4 children will need recorders for their music lessons.

Year 5

Well hasn’t that half term flown by! With the weather turning warmer, it looks like our half term break is going to be wonderful.   After a week of reading, reciting and analysing inspiring poetry, Year 5 had a go at writing their own. Inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s Sunscreen, they created thoughtful ‘letters to their future selves’, using the same structure and demonstrating maturity and creativity that impressed staff. In Dragon Mountain, they explored how the author’s language conveys a range of emotions and identified techniques that engage the reader. In maths, pupils tackled problem-solving with multiplication and division, consolidating formal methods. Some classes also revised key concepts in shape and space to prepare for upcoming tests. Following their visit to Indi Rock, two classes explored Mayan mathematics, learning to calculate using a base-20 system with just three symbols. As always, they approached these challenges with determination and enthusiasm. Our history lesson focused on Mayan religion.  The children were introduced to the Mayan gods and then using their learning from previous areas of study, they compared their roles, finding similarities and differences between the civilisations.  They were fascinated to find that many of the civilisations had the gods for the same areas and great discussions were had regarding what they tell us about human needs and fears and why there were so many similarities. Their conversations and thoughts showed a depth of understanding beyond their years.   Our week and the half term ended with the Big Art Adventure.  The children were excited to choose an area of art from a huge range offered by the teachers and to spend the day learning, practising, perfecting their skills and creating something of which they could be proud.  It was wonderful to see the mix of different year groups working, learning, creating and helping each other and we look forward to showing you the fruits of their labour at our upcoming open evening.   The Year 5 staff wish you and the children a wonderful, fun-filled and relaxing half term and look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 3rd June.

Year 6

Following the efforts and achievement of SATs week, Year 6 pupils have continued to approach their learning with enthusiasm and creativity. In English and Connected Curriculum, pupils have been completing and refining their independent knowledge organisers linked to their chosen UK location. They carefully selected and organised information about the most significant and interesting aspects of their area of study, presenting their research clearly and thoughtfully. In art, pupils have begun creating their sculptures inspired by their geographical learning. It has been wonderful to see their imaginative ideas starting to take shape, with pupils applying creativity, problem-solving skills and careful craftsmanship throughout the process. In maths, pupils have been practising presenting their work neatly and accurately using pen, helping to prepare them for expectations in Year 7. They approached this maturely and showed great care in maintaining high standards of presentation while continuing to apply their mathematical skills confidently.

Online Safety

Minecraft remains hugely popular with young players, offering creative freedom and social interaction. This guide explores how features like public servers, in-game chat and multiplayer modes can introduce risks, including contact with strangers, exposure to inappropriate behaviour and privacy concerns linked to independent server hosting. It also highlights issues such as griefing, in-game spending and potentially addictive gameplay loops. With clear, actionable advice, the guide helps parents and educators set boundaries, choose safer settings and support children in enjoying Minecraft responsibly while staying protected online.

Inspirational Person - Sir Ernest Shackleton

We were delighted to receive so many inspiring surfboard designs following last half term’s Showbie Challenge. The entries clearly reflected our Golden Values, and we are impressed with the effort and creativity shown. A small selection of the designs is shared below, but everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves. Prizes have been awarded to all participants — well done! We hope to see more fantastic entries again this half term. This half term, children have been learning about the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton and how he demonstrated the value of integrity during his expedition to Antarctica. When his ship, The Endurance, became trapped in the ice, Shackleton faced an incredibly difficult decision. He could continue pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming the first person to cross Antarctica, or he could abandon the mission to ensure his crew returned home safely. Integrity means doing the right thing — even when it is difficult, even when no one is watching, and even when it costs you something. Shackleton showed true integrity by giving up his dream and choosing people over success. He told his crew, “Our goal now is simple: everyone comes home alive.” Thanks to his leadership and integrity, every member of the Endurance crew was rescued. Showbie Challenge Although Ernest Shackleton did not receive a medal or award for his expedition, his integrity is what made his story truly remarkable. Your challenge is to design an “Integrity Award” that you would present to Shackleton. Your design must include:

  • A title for the award
  • A picture or symbol
  • A short explanation explaining why he deserves it

We can’t wait to see your thoughtful and creative designs! These can be uploaded to Showbie and some blank templates have been saved there to help you if needed.

Attendance

Our attendance award will return after half term.
