Conservation Committee -What’s Blooming Now?

Late - Spring Wildflowers

The following is a selection of local wildflowers that bloom in May - June. You can expand small patches by clearing any weeds around the bases of the plants you’d like to encourage. Weed-whacking around them works well on larger areas. The annuals can re-seed very well and the perennials often expand through their root structures.

Landscaping Ideas for the WUI and Zone Zero

UC Berkeley, IBHS, and CSAA Insurance Group announced the winners of their student landscaping contest to emphasize wildfire defense while preserving attractiveness. Student designers placed special emphasis on Zone Zero as well as adhering to the requirements of the IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home.

The students submitted ideas to remodel a home’s landscape at 3 price points with $5,000, $10,000, or unlimited budgets. Some plans use the 3 tiers as progressive steps towards an ultimate goal. The virtual landscape images and graphics may inspire you in protecting and beautifying your own home. Read the detailed submissions of the 8 winners at:

Mow your weeds now

The weather is warming up quickly, and those tall grassy weeds are turning yellow and dry, which means they will spread fire quickly. This abatement was required by July 1st each year, but with the new Ordinance 24-01, it can be required at all times of the year. Suffice to say, you should mow now. Cut grasses to no more than 4” high when they are within 100 feet of a structure and/or within 10 feet of the roadway.

For vegetation other than weeds, the WFPD Chipper Program is on now! Details are at:
