the Farmers Market
Locally sourced and loved.
Find yourself enjoying fresh fruits or street food for Sunday’s breakfast from this diverse array of local vendors. The farmers market at Vizcaya is a platform for locals to promote their businesses as well as an opportunity for visitors to fall in love with sustainable and artisanal goods. Here in the market, the friendly voices that oversee the booths leave you with a deep appreciation and understanding of the passionate work they are devoted to.
This community seeks to protect its art, people, and environment. Regularly showcasing up-and-coming local businesses, expanding their payment methods to SNAP and EBT, and establishing a compost drop-off with every Sunday market shows their commitment to being accessible and sustainable.
The market is open to the public every Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm, making it the perfect pitstop before entering the Museum grounds. There are occasionally events such as Free Yoga that only deepen the community’s bond with each other and the nature that surrounds them. The trees that engulf the market feel more like a blanket that separates the busy Miami streets from the clear chirping of the birds within the garden. Although not many people know of its existence it patiently waits to serve as an escape for its visitors.
Inspired by the crops that once helped the Vizcaya estate remain self-sufficient, the Urban Oasis Project was born. They are the organization that has made possible this and many other markets across Miami in efforts to provide quality products and uplift farmers.
Vendor Spotlight
vizcaya museum and gardens
Florida's history is undeniably complicated for the multiple conquests it has undergone. It is the reason why the relics we see across it have influences from different cultures and people. The grandness of its architecture and art within its walls represents a faraway Gilded Age. Vizcaya stands now as a relic of the times of grand gardens and palaces. The combination of all these elements makes Vizcaya the perfect destination for History, Nature, or Art enthusiasts.
Main House
Before it was Miami’s home, it was the winter residence of a man named James Deering. James Deering was known as a scholar, socialite, traveler, and cultural ambassador. He was part of the family business which focused on agricultural technology. He went on to become a leader in the field of agricultural machinery. In his later years when he fell sick, Vizcaya was purchased to be a form of escape from the busy life he had led until this point.
The architecture of the estate was inspired by 18th-century Northern Italian Villas. Entering the rooms of the main house is the experience of stepping into a Baroque painting with its high ceilings and detailed murals. To contrast the antique architecture, the house was originally equipped with the latest technology of the time. Vizcaya had heating and ventilation, a dumbwaiter, two elevators, refrigerators, a partly automated laundry room, a telephone switchboard, and a central vacuum-cleaning system. The essence and purpose of each person who brought it to life is materialized throughout the Main House. The north façade has a unique swimming pool that emerges from the lower level of the house. The south façade holds the enclosed gardens of the estate with the most beautiful sculptures. The west façade is filled with elaborate decorations that characterize its prime time. The east façade is most striking as it has a clear view of the water into Biscayne Bay. Each façade of the house provides a different perspective of Vizcaya's attributes and plethora of art worth appreciating deeply.
Gardens
It is the harmonious collaboration between art and nature that allows Vizcaya’s gardens to shine as brightly as they do. Whether for a relaxing afternoon or a sightseeing visit, the gardens provide aesthetic and grounding value to any day. Engaging in a hobby such as photography, drawing, or writing is the perfect match with the auditory cues of birds and trees swaying with the wind. The architectural structure of the gardens takes inspiration from European royal gardens and features Rococo and Baroque sculptures that with the flora serve as the garden’s decoration. The garden’s sophisticated attributes ultimately forged a cultural and personal connection to Miami natives. In the Latinx community the “Quinceañera." is the tradition of celebrating a young girl’s coming of age at 15 years old. The Quinceañera is to be greatly celebrated with a party, dances, and photoshoots to keep a record of this rite of passage. Vizcaya Gardens is one of the most popular destinations to create these keepsakes, with photography companies having Vizcaya Museum and Gardens as part of promotional packages and more. As an acclaimed destination, there is evidence of the great memories that can be made here, giving its visitors the same warm welcome every time.
The Vizcaya Cafe and Shop
As the afternoon ends, making your way back to the main house will be a lot sweeter. Alongside the main house sits the newly renovated Vizcaya Café and shop. It took the place of the original estate's recreational area which included a smoking room, a billiard room, and a bowling alley. This transformation supports the Museum's efforts to continue providing a complete experience that will create bonds with locals and newcomers. The Vizcaya Café and Shop is a place to replenish energies and potentially bring back a piece of Vizcaya home with you. The collection of curated gifts shows off the architecture and artistic value of Vizcaya. The shop is where people from different parts of the world take a physical reminder of their scenic day. It is a great way to share the Vizcaya Museum with someone else or remind yourself of the peaceful day spent in Vizcaya.
However, the day is not complete without trying the popular Vizcaya Café. The Cafés menu has a comfortable selection of starters, meals, desserts, and beverages made by in-house chefs with locally sourced ingredients. Indoor and outdoor seating alike have exceptional ambiance where you can enjoy your meal and take in the sights Vizcaya has to offer. The café closes at 5 pm, which allows for one more stroll around the garden before they close at 5:30 pm and make your way home.
