Year 3

As our wintry weather continues, the children’s imaginations have been transported to the much warmer setting of Ancient Greece. In our spring term topic, Gods and Mortals, they are gradually becoming immersed in the rich culture of this ancient civilisation. In English lessons, the children have developed historical setting descriptions of Ancient Greece for the opening of a Greek myth. They went on to describe the mythical beast, Medusa, choosing rich vocabulary to entertain their audience. Medusa and Perseus were then compared using both comparatives and superlatives to highlight the differences between this famous monster and the cunning hero who defeated her. The children also enjoyed imagining the gripping dialogue which must have taken place between these adversaries. Maths lessons have remained focused on geometry with children recalling and extending their knowledge of 2D shapes. They have been applying their knowledge of lines and angles to describe a variety of polygons.  They have also been developing the use of Carroll diagrams to sort shapes according to their chosen criteria. The children’s scientific understanding of forces has been developed to include friction, this week. The recent icy weather provided some very timely and useful experiences to share and discuss!  The children have planned an investigation involving friction which they are looking forward to carrying out next week. In history, we have been learning about ancient Greek gods and architecture - particularly their temples. The children have produced some impressive, labelled drawings of these famous structures.  Don’t be surprised if they start pointing out Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns to you!

Year 4

In English this week, we have studied the sequel to last week’s Brilliant Book - The Day the Crayons Came Home. The children have thoroughly enjoyed writing their own postcard, in the same style as the author, from a crayon who has been left behind. They have also identified the features of diary extracts and then planned and written a diary from the viewpoint of a different writing implement. Negative numbers, line graphs and converting between measures has been a large focus in maths this week.  Some children consolidated their knowledge of metric measures before converting between them. The key focus has been line graphs as this skill will also be developed in future lessons on the weather patterns in geography. The children have had to study and interpret a range of graphs. Some groups have even produced their own line graphs using supplied data!  Within our Connected Curriculum lessons, we have been looking at the physical features of Italy and the UK.  Using a range of sources, the children located a range of geographical features, noting similarities and differences between the two nations. We have also been exploring ingredients used to make pizza.  The children evaluated the smell, texture and taste to support their decisions when they come to design their pizza! It was a gaseous week for science!  As scientists, the children had fun observing the effects of different gases within a variety of scenarios and recorded their findings in the form of labelled diagrams.

Year 5

Despite a week of mixed weather, our resilient Year 5 pupils have fully embraced a wide range of engaging learning opportunities. In maths, the children reviewed and developed their addition and subtraction strategies. They built on prior learning by using rounding to check calculations, explored number lines as a method for checking subtraction (particularly with money) and tackled increasingly challenging problems, including missing number calculations and multi-step reasoning. The children have been highly engaged in their narrative writing, inspired by Danny MacAskill’s dramatic ascent of the InPin. Using the Skye ridge as a setting, they revisited the key elements of effective storytelling, focusing on tension, character development and differing viewpoints. Planning, oral storytelling and drafting opening scenes helped them strengthen both confidence and written outcomes. In science, learning moved from sexual to asexual reproduction in plants. The children explored the different types, identified plants that reproduce asexually and compared the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Our Fragile Earth topic brought some hands-on (and foamy!) learning this week. After learning about tectonic plates, the children investigated convergent, divergent and transform movements using paper plates and shaving foam to model earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain formation. They documented and annotated their findings before concluding the week by researching volcano types and presenting their knowledge in colourful fact files. A memorable week — and very fresh-smelling classrooms!

Year 6

Building upon their reading and learning from last week, the pupils applied many of the narrative techniques used by Michael Morpurgo in the engaging short story The Giant’s Necklace, as the inspiration for an epilogue for the story. They were able to incorporate many highly emotive elements to great effect. Following this, they read the powerful and emotive short story, The Long Walk, which will be central to their learning in English next week.   Following previous learning about Karl Linnaeus's system of classification, the Year 6 pupils have been expanding their vocabulary and understanding of the intricate manner in which living things are categorised. To showcase their newfound knowledge, they researched invertebrates and creatively presented their findings. Within Connected Curriculum, they have learned about the major biomes around the world and how they are linked to climate. They have also had the opportunity to make comparisons between two biomes, studying them in greater detail. Within this topic, they have also been introduced to the artwork of Henri Rousseau as an initial inspiration for this term’s artwork. They have also selected an animal to become the focal point of their artwork and practised drawing and refining their composition of the animal.

Online Safety

Digital devices are woven into everyday life for children and young people, but balancing the benefits with potential risks can feel challenging. This guide explores how screen use can influence sleep, emotional regulation, physical health and online experiences, offering clear context around why concerns about well-being are growing. Written with schools and families in mind, the guide shares practical, realistic advice for setting boundaries, encouraging open conversations and building digital literacy. With insights from an experienced mental health professional, it supports adults to help children develop healthier, more mindful relationships with technology.

Year 5/6 Girls' Football vs Fairways

The whole of the year 5/6 girls’ football team travelled to Fairways to play a friendly and league match on Wednesday 14th January. The league match was a tough battle between both teams with plenty of tackles and defensive blocks making it difficult for both teams to get a shot at goal. In the second half, West Leigh had a few chances but with the keeper pulling off some great saves and the ball going wide on a number of occasions, the match ended in a 0-0 draw.  On the other pitch West Leigh had a great match scoring three goals in the first half. The team had to work harder in the second half with Fairways managing to score a few goals, however they continued to play with confidence and finished victorious with a 5-3 win. Both teams played fantastic football and put all their hard work from training into the matches, demonstrating great team work, confidence and ability to adapt and change their attacking play to get shots at goal. Next up in the league is Thorpe Hall School.

Inspirational Person - David Attenborough

This half term's inspirational person is the amazing Sir David Attenborough. In the year that he turns 100, we learned about some of the incredible ways he has taught us about our responsibility for the planet. He did not start his career with the aim of saving the world - but as he was given the chance to spend time with so many different creatures in their habitats, he realised that they were in danger. Some of his programmes talk directly about these problems, but most of the time he likes to show how wonderful nature is, hoping it will make people want to look after it. We thought that Sir David really showed us how to take responsibility for the world around us, through teaching people how our human actions affect animals and their habitats. By explaining climate change, pollution and habitat loss in a clear and calm way, he helps us understand that we all have a responsibility to look after the Earth for future generations. Responsibility also means sticking with something even when it’s hard or slow. David Attenborough has dedicated his entire career to conservation, showing us that being responsible isn’t a one-time action—it’s a lifelong choice. Well done to all of our Showbie challenge winners for the last half term. This term's Showbie challenge will hopefully help us to make the world a better place - one small bit at a time.  Use the WWF link to find out some of the ways that you can help. Choose one and tell me what you did – you could share a photo of a nature walk, a letter that you have sent your MP or you could even tell me how you became a Walrus detective!
