Program Note

The Soraya has a longstanding track record presenting Disney animated films with live hestra, including last year’s 100th anniversary celebration, with clips from dozens of Disney classics crossing all generations. This year, we are pleased to bring you Coco, but not with a standard symphony orchestra. Instead, we are proud to pair the film with a musical ensemble from Mexico that specializes in using traditional cultural instruments. When it was released in 2017, Coco broke new ground in its inclusion of authentic Mexican culture, and these performances at The Soraya further that commitment. For The Soraya, highlighting cultures from other nations is nothing new - we do it all the time. In this instance, we’re particularly excited to welcome families for a cultural experience that memorably honors Dia de los Muertos.

Gratefully,

Orquesta Folclórica Nacional de México

Widely known for its long collaboration with Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México de Silvia Lozano, the Orquesta Folclórica Nacional de México stands out as a musical ensemble recognized for its keen ability to fuse instruments from both the pre-Hispanic and colonial eras to create a unique and distinctive sound that evokes the rich history and culture of Mexico.

These expert musicians are highly trained in the interpretation of a wide variety of genres and styles of Mexican folk music, such as Mariachi music, Jarana music, Son music, and Huapango music, among others. In addition, their repertoire includes songs and instrumental pieces dating from pre-Hispanic and colonial times, which allows them to connect with the country's historical and cultural roots. Among the instruments used by the Orquesta Folclórica are traditional pre-Hispanic drums, such as the “Huehuetl “and “Tepobaztli”, as well as flutes, “Ocarinas” and other pre-Hispanic wind instruments. They also use guitars, violins, double basses, and other stringed instruments that date back to colonial times, resulting in a unique and surprising sound combination.
