Design & Visual Communications Syllabus

Introduction

Students enrolled in Design & Visual Communications (DVC) explores the power of visual messages in our world through analysis and application. DVC introduces students to graphic design as a form of visual communication through the use of type, image, form, and color. Students learn fundamental concepts of art and design for continuation in post-secondary education or are career-ready and able to enter the workforce.

DVC provides an understanding of design elements, design principles, color theory, typography, drawing, video editing, web design, animation, and digital photography. Students use their understanding to plan, design, and execute print and digital media for a specific purpose and audience. Students obtain basic competency in industry-standard computer software programs included in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of design software. Through lectures, demonstrations, discussions, critiques, and hands-on projects that incorporate the principles and elements of design including, but not limited to: Magazines, identity, advertising, websites, animation, digital photography, posters, jewel cases, iPad/mobile device design and video editing. In addition, students develop communication skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills.

At the end of completing the DVC CTE program, students will be able to:

  • Understand basic design and typography principles and use them effectively.
  • Understand color theory and use color as a design tool.
  • Photograph images using principles, techniques and manipulate digital images.
  • Understand and apply the creative process using their own creative ability to create concepts.
  • Apply problem-solving skills to visually present solutions for a specific purpose and audience.
  • Develop project management skills, both as an individual and as a member of a team.
  • Identify the influence of various historic styles on visual communications today.
  • Use industry-standard vocabulary to analyze, discuss and present designs.
  • Communicate orally and in writing responses to, and analysis of, designs by others and themselves.
  • Understand ethical issues in design and digital media.
  • Maintain a digital portfolio of completed projects for career readiness.
  • Have the opportunity to obtain 'Adobe Certified Professional' credentials.
Students are expected to maintain a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail–along with consistently building on their technical skills.
