UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme

Applications close 18th September

The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR.

Each institution has its own policy for determining SRS eligibility and making offers. For example, you may also have to submit an EAS application institution-defined dates, or attend a school in a particular region.

SRS is not available for all courses. The institution-specific SRS criteria detail any exceptions. https://www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/scholarships-and-schemes/schools-recommendation-schemes

State Wind Ensemble

The Arts Unit

Last week, I was given the rare opportunity to play at the Opera House alongside the State Education Wind Band, Year 9-12 high school students from all around NSW! Throughout the four-day intense rehearsals, I quickly formed close bonds with students I didn’t know. I became immersed in an environment that offered a combination of artistic, personal and professional growth that enhanced my technical skills as a musician.

The highlight for me was the profound sense of reward and pride while performing on stage in the Concert Hall. Team collaboration was vital as everyone was highly talented, which resulted in an incredible performance. I was proud to represent South Sydney High School. It was an experience I will truly cherish.

Debs Shatari, Year 10

HSC Showcase

Last Tuesday the HSC class of 2023 shared their major works across Visual Arts and Industrial Technology-Timber in an exhibition that captured our students' creativity, innovation, technical skills and conceptual development. These projects represent the culmination of months of commitment, planning, designing and applying the development of skills to create inspiring and engaging works.

Music 1 students presented half of their elective programs in a range of works reflective of the diversity in their course topics with a selection of solo and ensemble performances. The opportunity to perform is an important part of their HSC Practical process, with time to reflect and improve arrangements and work through the challenges inevitable in preparation for live music performances.

Many thanks to Mr Benson and to VET (Entertainment) students for sound and lighting, Nadira and Ms Healey for the great photographs, the SASS staff for ongoing support, and to Leah for her Welcome to Country which related to the Arts and cultural traditions.

We wish our students every success as they work through this final chapter of their high school years.

Library news

Book Week

The biggest event of the year, Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) Book Week, is here. This year’s theme is Read Grow Inspire.

The young adult author, Will Kostakis, visited our school to speak to Year 11 and 12 students. Will presented amusing and insightful anecdotes of how he achieved a publishing deal while still at high school and his creative writing process. Will also conducted a writing workshop with English Extension students providing valuable advice for their major work compositions.

The author's talk and writing workshop with Will Kostakis were both very enriching activities that helped me gain an understanding of how to approach my writing for the HSC and future endeavours beyond my high school education. It helped reduce stress relating to writing in my last year of high school and gain confidence in my literary abilities. I am very grateful for this experience – Spyder, Year 11.

From high school book deals to HSC insights, Will Kostakis' journey inspired us. He offered us valuable information for creative writing in the HSC examinations which helped develop our writing abilities. I'm so grateful for the experience! – Jessica, Year 12.
