SBFF Prez Post 2023
Only a few more weeks of a glorious summer in Santa Barbara and we are setting our sights on more fishing.
At the time of publishing this newsletter six members will have returned from a day-trip to the Channel Islands on the Island Tak from Channel Islands Harbor. We’ll have a full report in the October newsletter.
UPCOMING OUTINGS
MAMMOTH LAKES/ROCK CREEK OUTING
In a couple weeks members will cast for trout near Mammoth Lakes September 14-17.
Probable target waters include Crowley Lake, Hot Creek, the Upper Owens and Rock Creek. We’ll camp at French Camp campground on Rock Creek, just up the road from Tom’s Place.
If you haven’t made it to a Club fishing/camping outing, you’ll definitely want to make this one.
MORE OUTINGS
CORBINA AND STRIPERS AND TROUT . . . oh my!
Then there’s O’Neil Forebay for stripers . . .
The California Fly Fishing Open on October 14 in Kernville, CA - more info
And closer to home, some members have been targeting corbina in the local surf. You’ll want to keep an eye on the tides and the beach crowds for these elusive fighters. A few of us were out last week and the beans were plentiful!

2023 ANNUAL PICNIC
Our Club BBQ a few weeks ago was a huge success. This year we held a casting competition. The finals came down to a cast-off between Rick Paaske and Mark Rockwell, with Rick casting away with the honors.
SAVE THE DATE!
Our next Club social event will be our Holiday gathering held at Mike and Cristi Pugh’s on the afternoon of December 2. More details in the future.
Coastal Cleanup Day 2023
Our next community event is on September 23 and we need you to join the Team. The Cleanup is from 9:00AM to noon and we’ll meet at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club. Parking will be available in the yacht club lot.
This is not only a fun event, but will show our commitment to the community and our local environment. Last year a group of us helped along the breakwater and all the way to the sand spit. More info
Be sure to represent and wear your Club hats!
Conservation Committee
We are forming our committee chaired by Mark Rockwell. So far eight members have volunteered to join.
Conservation is a pillar of our Club’s mission along with flyfishing, friendships and education. As this committee evolves it will identify conservation issues that the Club will support with volunteer time and money.
Trout in the Classroom
Trout in the Classroom is starting again. Our TIC leader, Terry Fernandez, will give us an update at the September 12 general meeting. If you can help or know of any local teacher who would be interested in participating in this most valuable experience, please let Terry know.
Last Cast…
Please be sure to check out the new section of our newsletter! We’re providing highlights of or monthly Board of Directors meetings.
We believe it’s important that members see what Club leadership is discussing and planning. Let any board member know if you have an interest in serving a two year term as a board member or officer of the Club.
I’ve found the experience to be very rewarding. It does take a commitment, but as you can see by way of the progress our Club is making, it’s been well worth it.
We’re already making plans for 2024!
