About the Program

Chamber

One of Ballet BC Artistic Director Medhi Walerski’s most acclaimed works to date, Chamber is a visually rich echo of what Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring provokes in the choreographer’s imagination. Danced by a large ensemble to a stunning score by Joby Talbot, the work is a primal, ritualistic piece which seeks to balance order and chaos — ultimately underlining the duality between the collective and the individual nature of humankind.

Silent Tides

Silent Tides is an intimate work for two dancers that reflects our relationship to one another and to ourselves — the infinite gates where our bodies receive nourishment and otherness, vibration and energy. Touch, time, eternity, love, death, infinity, low tides, high tides.” — Medhi Walerski

Frontier

“Creation, for me, is about venturing into unknown territory and trying to be in a generative relationship with doubt. I find a pleasing parallel between what we don’t know about the universe, and what we don’t know about consciousness. Frontier is a portrait of the invisible forces that move us.” — Crystal Pite

“We can only think about the unknown in terms of the known.” — Anne Michaels, Held

Program Note

Ballet BC returns for its fourth visit to The Soraya, this time with three pieces that collectively comprise one of their most ambitious programs yet. Bookending the evening are two large-scale works.

The first is Medhi Walerski’s Chamber, a piece he created for Nederlands Dans Theater for the centenary of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (commissioned by Diaghilev). In 2013, Chamber appeared at Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance as the final installment of a yearlong celebration of The Rite of Spring milestone. In my role at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, I produced that series of events, including performances by the Joffrey Ballet and an exhibit of photos dubbed LA’s Rite that subsequently traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Walerski worked with composer Joby Talbot to create a new musical score inspired by Stravinsky’s original. I am so pleased to bring Chamber full circle in Los Angeles with this appearance at The Soraya.

The closing installment in tonight’s performance is already a well-known masterpiece in dance circles, choreographed by Crystal Pite, the Canadian choreographer who is already familiar to Soraya audiences for her work The Statement, which appeared here in 2022. Demonstrating Pite’s razor-sharp wit, The Statement enacted a scene around a boardroom table to a spoken-word score. Now, she brings us Frontier, which was originally created for Nederlands Dans Theater. Pite has reimagined portions of her original choreography, spending recent weeks rehearsing in Vancouver, British Columbia, with the company’s dancers. The unveiling of this refreshed version of Frontier is an important event in the 2024 international dance calendar.

In the middle of the evening is a more intimate work, a duet created by Walerski during the pandemic that reflects those isolating times and the longing for connection.

What an honor it is to have Ballet BC, under the leadership of Walerski, as The Soraya’s resident company. The continuity, year to year, provides important opportunities to showcase returning artists and build a following for the company, one of the West Coast’s finest.

Gratefully,

Chuckas has performed works by Sharon Eyal, Marco Goecke, and Medhi Walerski, and premiered roles in new works by Dorotea Saykaly, Shay Kuebler, Johan Inger, Roy Assaf, and Out Innerspace. His passion for dance eventually led him to New York City, where he honed his skills at Manhattan Youth Ballet, earning the first Men of Merit Scholarship Award. Notably, Harbutt had the privilege of studying and performing works by renowned ballet masters, including the legendary George Balanchine.

At 16, Harbutt’s love for dance earned him a coveted spot at The Juilliard School for dance. This invaluable experience provided him with a comprehensive education in dance and numerous opportunities to collaborate with other divisions, particularly the Drama Division. Amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, Harbutt dedicated a year to training with Arts Umbrella before returning to Juilliard for his junior year. Shortly thereafter, he embarked on his professional career with Ballet BC in Vancouver, British Columbia, while pursuing his BFA at Juilliard.

Harbutt also nurtures a deep interest in acting, philosophy, and visual art. He continuously seeks out avenues where these art forms intersect, further enriching his artistic journey.
