Prep School Newsletter

Friday 13 March 2026

This week in the Prep School we celebrated Wellbeing Week (also known as SHED Week), giving pupils the opportunity to focus on healthy habits for both body and mind.

The week began with energetic fitness sessions led by Mr George, followed by calming yoga with Mrs Stein, one of our Senior School teachers. Pupils also learned about the importance of a good night’s sleep during a special session with Judy Clark from Babywinkz, and explored healthy eating through nutrition and hydration workshops with Mrs Low. This last workshop reminded children about the benefits of healthy eating which fits beautifully with our PSHE theme this term - Healthy Me. Avoiding crisps, chocolate and sweets for their afternoon snack will reinforce their learning!

We ended the week with a wonderful Forest Wellbeing session led by Mrs Youdale, enjoyed by Year 5 and Reception pupils in the fresh air. With just two weeks remaining before the Easter holiday, excitement is also building for our much-anticipated “Anything Goes” performance. Tickets are selling quickly, so please be sure to secure yours soon to avoid disappointment.

Countdown to Easter

As we look forward to all the wonderful activities planned for the final week of term, please take a moment to review the Countdown to Easter Week plan attached. Just a gentle reminder that there will be no late bus in the last week and no After School Care on Friday, 27 March, the last day of term.

What happened in School this week?

Caterpillars

We've had an exciting week observing nature! We were thrilled to see some frogspawn in our classroom. They started as a tiny black dot inside little blobs of jelly and have now started to grow and stretch.  We have carefully watched and noticed some amazing changes with our beans that we planted last week.  They are bursting into life and getting taller by the day. We talked about how plants need water, sunlight and time to grow. It has been fascinating to see how quickly they all change when we check on them each day.

Butterflies

We have had a super busy week and have loved learning all about the life cycle of a frog and a Butterfly. It is so exciting to have real Frogspawn that we can observe and the tadpoles are already starting to wriggle. Another highlight of the week was spending the afternoon with Year 6 in the forest. They were so kind and helped us to climb trees and find signs of Spring. We are super excited to come back after the weekend and see if we have lots of tadpoles swimming around inour tub.

Reception

It has been ‘out of this world’ in Reception this week! We began the week by reading the story - Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy. In the story, Baby Bear finds a rocket in the cupboard under the stairs and takes a trip to the moon. So, we talked about a trip to the moon and the children drew and labelled what they would take with them. On Tuesday we got dressed in our spacesuits, counted down from ten and blasted off to the moon! After exploring, we came across deep craters and some of the children even saw a few aliens!! We have learnt about planets in the solar system, the moon and stars. It has been fun sharing space facts and learning about space.

Year 1

Year 1 have really enjoyed some practical Maths lessons this week, looking at measuring in non-standard units. They have used cubes, pencils, hands and even their shoes to check how long or wide different items are, they are also able to compare the size of different things using mathematical vocabulary.  The children have had lots of fun in Wellbeing Week, learning the importance of exercise, sleep, good nutrition and relaxation by taking part in a range of assemblies and workshops. Thank you to everyone who came to talk to us!  We are also rehearsing in earnest for our class assembly. Please do continue to help the children with learning their lines, thank you!

Year 2

Year 2 have had a busy week! The pupils thoroughly enjoyed Wellbeing Week where they talked about the importance of exercise with Mr George, learnt about eating a balanced diet with Mrs Low and why sleep is so important with Judy Clarke. In Maths we have been looking at measuring in both cm and metres, where the pupils measured the heights of items in the classroom and around the playground. We also put our metre sticks together and measured the length of a small blue whale on the grass outside of school. In Art we have been looking at Maasai culture and how they create beaded necklaces. The children have made their own by painting colourful patterns onto their base and then threading painted pasta to the bottom.

Year 3

Continuing our Science topic on light, Year 3 have been investigating which objects are transparent (lets light through), opaque (lets no light through) and translucent (lets some light through). In pairs, using solar torches, the class found objects in the classroom and shone the torch onto them, checking to see if any light could be seen on the other side. They were surprised with some of their findings, particularly the china cup which was translucent.

Year 4

Year 4 have enjoyed a busy and engaging week of learning across a range of subjects. In Computing, pupils coded Micro:bits to measure sound levels around the school, exploring how technology can be used to collect real-world data. In maths, they used Numicon to create and understand mixed numbers, helping them visualise how numbers can be partitioned. The class also got their hands dirty planting potatoes for the Prep School Potato Growing Competition, and took time to focus on wellbeing with a calming yoga session with Mrs Stein as part of Wellbeing Week.

Year 5

Year Five are completing the week well informed about how to support their health and wellbeing through gaining adequate sleep, keeping hydrated, exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet. Each day they have had expert input to engage their minds and bodies which has been rewarding and enriching. Alongside the themed week, in PSHE, the children have been exploring the theme of 'Healthy Me' and in particular smoking and vaping. Discussing making informed decisions about smoking filled the lessons once the children were aware of the health risks.

Year 6

What an amazing week! Year 6 have learned how to keep fit and why it is so incredibly important, discovered that - whilst challenging - yoga really helps keep everyone calm and focused and also been taught some top sleep tips - did you know that you spend one third of your life asleep? The children concluded their week by finding out about what good nutrition consists of and how important it is to our overall health. All this AND they still had time to conclude their class text 'Clockwork' by thinking about the questions they would like to ask the key characters, tackling ratio in maths, playing in football matches and taking the Nursery children on a Spring walk.

Sport News

Mabel recently competed in the South East NDP Grades competition on Saturday 8 March and achieved an outstanding set of results. She placed 1st in her age category and 1st overall in Prep 2, competing against 89 girls. Mabel also achieved 1st place on Beam, Range and Floor, 2nd on Bars, and 3rd on Vault. Her overall score of 65.084, which equates to an AA ‘Working Above and Beyond’ Grade, was recorded as the highest score across the entire weekend of both Prep and Development competitions.

We are incredibly proud of Mabel’s commitment, hard work and determination—an excellent achievement! Mrs Hall

Congratulations to these two superstars, Harriet and Margot, who both competed in and successfully passed their NDP Regional Grades on Saturday. Mrs Cox

Harriet placed 7th overall, despite a fall on bars which incurred a significant penalty. She achieved 5th on Vault, 6th on Floor, and 4th on Range, and passed with a Working Beyond grade. Margot finished 13th overall, also experiencing a fall on bars which resulted in a large deduction. She placed 10th on Vault and 10th on Bars, passing with a Working Above grade. We are incredibly proud of both girls for their determination and resilience, particularly in the way they continued to perform so well after their falls. A fantastic achievement—well done!
