WOW! of the WEEK 14th October 2024 It's BACK FROM OUTER SPACE!

WOW! of the week is back. Your weekly insight into cool things happening this week. We'll be opening up weeks for student takeovers and hopefully reflecting the interests of the college. This week is making sure you are introduced to the kind of things we shared. It's been quite the half term, loads done, exhibitions, trips, visiting lecturers. If you've got involved well done. As you progress through college Unis and Employers want to see what else you are interested in? Are you curious? Have you ever collaborated? Can you take risks? This blog is designed to show you how to do that and how it relates to professional practise and a career in the arts!!! I hope you have a great half term, make sure you make the most of the opportunities that are available to you.

CREATIVE THINGS TO DO IN GREATER MANCHESTER OVER HALF TERM

Find all the information you'll need here at Creativetourist.com

This is a great website that regularly updates so you can see all creative output in the North, which you can then filter to specific regions. Something for everyone and a great place to explore to find things to do. Links to booking sites etc. all available through the website. An absolute must visit!

WHOLE COLLEGE COLLABORATIVE OPPORTUNITY. WE'D LIKE STAFF AND STUDENTS TO GET INVOLVED.

"I'LL GIVE YOU A BELL WHEN I GET OFF."

Make your bus journey more enjoyable by being creative! I am making artwork about my bus journeys and i want to collaborate with you.

Send me your photos, videos, sound clips, tickets, poems, overheard conversations, stories you have heard. Whilst on your bus journeys or when waiting for a bus.

I would like you to show me; where you go? What you think about? Who are you with? What do you talk about? What do you hear? What does it look like, sound like, feel like?

I will then turn your input and creativity into a zine and online exhibition which will be shared by college and, I hope, the bee network.

A great chance to be creative and collaborate on a project that’ll make people think about bus journeys differently.

Please send your photos, videos, overheard conversations or any creative outcomes via email to submissions@bolton-sfc.ac.uk

Example ideas

CERCLE: YOUTUBE

Cercle is a French music platform that posts DJ sets from all over the world. During the pandemic they shared a series of incredible sets in remote places around the world. These videos will give you an insight into the type of videos and you can find and watch the full set via their YouTube. Really cool to watch and calming as you try and relax over half term.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Spotlight: Alvaro Barrington

Tate Britain shared this video this week to showcase a new installation by Alvaro Barrington.

The work reflects his experience, sometimes fun, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes very challenging? It's a celebration of black culture in all it's forms showcasing the good but challenging societies ongoing prejudices and the challenged Black people still face daily.

It's fantastic to see the work and understand different experiences of the world.

Instagram: @andreyazizov

I've just started following this account of New York based designer and musician Andrey Azizov. It's great for showing you loads of cool design ideas, places to find new fonts, fonts of your favourite bands, image libraries, how to guides, you name it he's done a short video about it. A great follow for all you graphic designers especially, but anyone wanting to make their digital work more contemporary.

He has a YouTube channel with it all on too.

TV: CHARLIE COOPER MYTH COUNTRY

What's not to like here, Charlie Cooper wandering around Britain in great weather looking into British myths and legends. I have loved the first episode with all available on the IPlayer.

Here with previous featured Man in The Woods!

Watch as Charlie discovers the strange ceremonies that make British history as weird and wonderful as you can imagine. Stonehenge, Crop circles and King Arthur amongst many more. A must if you like Detectorists, Gone Fishing and programmes like that.

STRETCH AND CHALLENGE BLOG

You are all set tasks in class but to really achieve you need to show a deep understanding of the creative world. This blog is designed to give you a range of starting points, should you not know how to start. You should be visiting galleries, watching films and TV being curious about how it was made. Watching documentaries about Creative practise or topics that will inform your work. You should be trying out ideas inspired by your findings.

Universities expect you to be interested and to be trying things out. I have attached some research of the things universities think young people are lacking when they join, if you use this blog and explore the work it'll be a great way to understand why it is so important to start developing these skills now.

CREATIVE WORKING PARTY OPPORTUNITY

Would you like to help run this blog? Do you have any ideas to share with the group? Do you want to work collaboratively across the departments? Is their anything you'd like to do but need help?

We've already had people who are making play lists, making zines and have offered to write posts for the Wow blog.

We want to set up a small group to do these things. It'll look great on your CV and you'll get to work collaboratively making work that can have an impact on the college and wider community. Let Rob in Art know if you want to get involved. I'll try and find a slot when we're all free to do it or arrange a time we are all happy doing. Looking forward to it!
