National Public Works Week May 17-22

The backbone of our community

Providing Essential Services All Year Long

Public Works Week celebrates all employees who represent “the backbone of our community,” including those who maintain roads and bridges, our water, wastewater and storm drain systems, respond to storms and emergencies, engineer our infrastructure and manage the offices to support all of the elements that are the “backbone of our community.

The Roadeo

Skills competition

As part of the week-long celebration, Public Works hosted its annual Roadeo event where county equipment operators demonstrated their skills through a series of safety- and precision-based challenges using specialized heavy equipment.  For example, Roadeo participants are tasked with using a loader to pick up tires and place them on a cone. Top performers have an opportunity to advance to regional and state Roadeo competitions.

“Public Works Week is an opportunity to recognize every dedicated professional who helps keep Placer County moving every day. The Roadeo portion is a great example of the talent, precision and professionalism our crews bring to the job. It showcases the incredible skill our team members have operating specialized equipment safely and efficiently, while also highlighting the pride they take in serving our communities.”

- Derek Gade, Director of Public Works

Food & Fun

The Roadeo event included a barbecue lunch, a watermelon eating contest and fun games for staff to enjoy during the employee appreciation week.

Thank you to all of our dedicated Public Works professionals!
