Principal's Message
What a relief to see the sun again. It has been a very wet May. According to the Bundjalung seasonal calendar Yirrimmbu (Wet Season) should have finished in February. It seems it has come late this year as we enter Warringu (Cold Season) with the start of June.
Visit of Monaro High School
Unfortunately, the rain didn’t end soon enough for our Sporting Exchange with Monaro High School. It was a very soggy field to play Rugby League on. The excellent sportsmanship of our students was on show across all three sports played on the day (rugby league, futsal and basketball). There is something really exhilarating about hearing the school cheer for our players and have that cheer echo out of the hall and into the school. More details in our sports section. Congratulations to all our students who “played the game” so well.
Remembering United Nations Peacekeepers International Day
On Friday 29th May, our Senior Student Leaders, James and Scarlett joined community members to recognise International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. James and Scarlett spoke at the ceremony hosted by the Mullumbimby Sub-branch of the RSL. The day pays tribute to the men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations for their professionalism, dedication and courage, and honours the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.
From all accounts, our School Representatives, James and Scarlet, spoke very confidently and were terrific Ambassadors for Mullumbimby High School. They spoke about the role of the Peacekeeper during the Order of Service. They had a chance to chat informally with Doug Baird and Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye. This photo was taken before the event formally started.
Positive Behaviour for Learning Focus of the week
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning Focus this week is on respectful language. In a world that seems to become less civil daily, where politicians sling nasty soundbytes at each other and where people can hide behind the anonymity of an online space to be vulgar and unpleasant to others, respectful language in everyday life means so much more. Using respectful language helps everyone feel safe, valued, and included — and it shows maturity and empathy. The words you choose can either support people or cause harm, so choosing kindness makes a real difference. When we speak respectfully, we strengthen relationships, build trust, and contribute to a more positive school community. At MHS, respectful language and communication looks and sounds like active listening, speaking intentionally, looking others in the eyes when speaking, using appropriate language for the audience and considering the impact our words have on others. Being respectful with our communication includes our digital world as well as our daily interactions.
P&C Meeting tonight
One of the things I value most about my role as Principal in this school is the strong community connections we have. Tonight (Monday 1st June) is our June P&C Meeting, a great opportunity to get involved in our school community and help to build a better school. Also coming up this week, a group of students will be taking the next steps in our Mullumbimby Voices of Youth Project. Following the Connect and Thrive Event that occurred on 25th March, these students will be looking through the student feedback from the Think Tank and planning a Pathway for Action. This process honours student voice and creates agency for young people to make positive change in their school and community.
2027 High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)- Extension Class.
Applications are now open for our HPGE Extension Class. In 2027, we will commence our first Year 7 Extension Class. This class will focus on developing the talent of students who demonstrate high potential in the intellectual and social emotional domain. We aim to identify students who demonstrate:
- Intellectual Depth: Strong thinking skills, curiosity, and a readiness for abstract reasoning and complex problem-solving.
- Social-Emotional Maturity: Resilience, self-awareness, leadership potential, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others.
- A Growth Mindset: A genuine interest in learning and a desire to be challenged.
- Potential vs. Achievement: We specifically look for students who show potential, including those who may currently be underachieving due to a lack of previous challenge.
If you have a year 6 student or know someone who might meet these selection criteria, please encourage them to have a look at our school website. https://mullumbimb-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/learning-and-support/high-potential-and-gifted-education.
Remember the winter uniform and cover up!
We are more than halfway in the term and things will be getting cooler. Please remember to visit the P&C’s Uniform shop to get your cold season uniform needs. The uniform shop profits all go back into funding opportunities for students at our school. Have a smashing week 7.

Monaro Sports High School Visit
Mullumbimby High School was delighted to host students and staff from Monaro Sports High School for a fantastic afternoon of interschool sport. Despite challenging weather conditions, with rain creating muddy and slippery playing surfaces, students embraced the opportunity to compete with enthusiasm, resilience and great sportsmanship. The wet conditions made for a memorable Rugby League and Netball contest, while indoor sports provided some relief from the rain. Mullumbimby students performed strongly across all sports, recording victories in Girls Futsal (7–2), Rugby League 9s (5 tries to 4), Netball and Boys Basketball. The day provided valuable opportunities for students to test their skills against quality opposition, build friendships and represent their school with pride. We thank Monaro Sports High School for making the long journey to Mullumbimby and look forward to future sporting exchanges.
State Football Championship in Sydney
Congratulations to Finn McKenzie, who represented North Coast at the State Football Championships in Sydney last week. Finn played as a striker and performed strongly throughout the tournament, scoring goals and providing assists for his teammates. This is a fantastic achievement and a great reward for Finn’s hard work and commitment to football.
Note from the Editors: We love to showcase everyone's achievements, but we are not always aware of them. We rely on parents/carers to send us photos and information about it so that we can share the good news.
SCHOOL VACCINATIONS
The school recently sent home information in the form of a flyer regarding the NSW School Vaccination Program 2026 including how to provide online consent. As part of the NSW School Vaccination Program 2026, the following vaccines will be offered free of charge at school:

- diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine – 1 dose
- human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine – 1 dose
Year 10 students:

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received. If your child is in Year 7, vaccinations will be commencing Wednesday 10th June, and you will need to give your permission (consent) either online or by filling out and returning the paper consent form for their routine school vaccinations. If your child is absent, there will be a catch-up vaccination later in the year.

Reminder of school procedures: Leaving Early, Arriving Late or Messages
GOING AWAY 5 DAYS OR MORE? A reminder to our school community that the NSW DET requires that parents arrange holiday DURING school vacations. If your family holiday is during school time, you will need to inform the School Principal in advance and submit a permission to leave from school. An application for leave should be provided at least two weeks prior to departure. Ask our office for an “Application for Leave” BEFORE the holiday. ABSENT, LATE OR EARLY? If your child is not at school, let us know they are safe. We will let you know they are not at school with an SMS message if we have not heard from you. COMING IN LATE? School starts every day at 8:50am for all students. If students arrive after that time and miss CARE (roll call), please let the school know why they are late or provide them with a note. Students need to sign in at Student Services Office as soon as they arrive on the premises. LEAVING EARLY? Only legitimate one-off appointments will be approved by the principal. A note or a phone call should be made to Student Services before 9:30am and a leave pass will be processed. MESSAGES TO STUDENTS? Please call before 2pm. Only URGENT messages will be passed on during class time. We ask that all arrangements regarding after school activities be discussed with your student BEFORE school to avoid stress and distraction.
