LYDON CONTRACTING LTD LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR UTILITIES & CIVIL ENGINEERING EXPERTS

Welcome to the August 2023 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.

Milton Keynes East

During August we were awarded the civils work associated with the installation of a new medium pressure gas main that will feed a new development in Milton Keynes East. With the opportunity to work under a road closure we deployed both our vacuum excavator and topcutter to accelerate the works.

Given the location of works and the need to cross the busy A509 dual carriageway intersection, close liaison with Milton Keynes council has been required.

Accident and Emergency

Although the new HV substation building at Bedford Hospital was complete back in May, works have continued on the hospital campus with further HV reinforcement work between the different substations.

During August we were required to be working in front of the busy accident and emergency unit therefore traffic management and access to the area was critical. The teams have worked hard to clear the area and close all trenches as promptly (and safely!) as possible to hand back the area to the trust.

On the buses (again!)

Work at Nottingham Trent Bus Depot has progressed well this month with all EV charger plinths installed in the main parking area which will enable 15 (double) EV chargers to be installed. Works are continuing with the HV trench to the new HV substation that will feed the site.

Powering the Midlands

Works have commenced at another bus depot this month in Thurmaston, Leicester where we have been instructed for both on-site and off-site infrastructure works in rediness for their new fleet of EV buses later this year.

This month saw the construction of the HV/TX base and the LV Cable trough ready for the installation of the HV switchgear and the LV Container. The main trench from the LV switch room to the EV charger bases has also started (consisting of 29no. ducts!). All works are being carried out while the bus depot is still operating a fleet of c.140 buses.

Cable installation

One of Lydon Contracting’s specialist service offerings is the installation of HV and LV cables. We invest in the latest technology and equipment to be able to provide a first-class service when it comes to cable installation.

Every month we install thousands of meters of HV and LV cable ranging from small building plot installs to new substation feeds. Check out our video below:

Safety first!

This month we have had a glowing report from an external auditor at our Oxford Bus Depot site. As you can see below, we have scored full marks across all categories demonstrating the quality of our work and providing confidence to our client.

An external Health & Safety audit is a comprehensive look at a company’s Health & Safety policies, processes, and systems to ensure that their Health & Safety measures are performing as intended and that they are protecting the workforce.

What are the benefits of an external health and safety audit?

External Safety Audits provide a wide range of benefits to our business. In addition to identifying the strengths and weaknesses of current policies, they also:-

  • Decrease liability.
  • Demonstrate the company’s commitment to compliance.
  • Increase employee understanding of environmental and safety regulations.

Using an external auditor not only ensures a higher level of experience within the industry, but also offers specialised knowledge that is up to date with latest legislation and standards, with objective and unbiased analysis and recommendations being at the forefront of the audit.

Face Fit Testing

Once again August has seen the updating of our operatives Face Fit tests. Face Fit testing is carried out to ensure that the operatives face mask is a correct fit when worn as per the legal guidelines and the manufacturer's instructions. A Face Fit test refers to the process of checking respiratory protective equipment to ensure if it offers adequate levels of protection to the wearer.

Respiratory protective equipment is essential nowadays to reduce the risk of work-related illness and loss of life. For example, asbestos is a leading cause of lung cancers like mesothelioma. However, you can’t be sure of your mask’s effectiveness without a competent, experienced tester which is our inhouse SHEQ Manager Steven Reid.
