Lifeguarding Course at FHS
At Freedom High School, students arenโt just learning in the classroom, theyโre gaining skills that can truly save lives. In a unique lifeguarding course led by Mr. Michael Cleffi and Mr. Joseph Stellato, students dive into hands-on training that goes far beyond the basics. Over the past six years, more than 80 students have successfully completed the program, earning their American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification and opening the door to meaningful summer employment at local pools. Throughout the nine-week course, students build confidence both in and out of the water. They learn essential lifeguarding techniques, including water rescues and CPR, while also developing a deeper understanding of safety, responsibility, and teamwork. The program even meets students where they are, helping non-swimmers learn how to swim and feel comfortable in the water. What makes this class especially impactful is how it connects real-world skills to future opportunities. Beyond preparing students for summer jobs, the certification provides a strong foundation in health and physical education, with skills that can translate into careers in healthcare, emergency response, or recreation management. Offered as a Physical Education elective, this course is a powerful example of how learning can extend beyond textbooks, equipping students with practical knowledge, life-saving abilities, and a sense of purpose. Watch our students in action as they practice techniques that could one day make all the difference.
