Dear University community,

This week at TAMIU is full of activities and opportunities to be engaged, informed and have fun.

  • Wellness is a big focus this week as we observe Mental Health Awareness Week, with activities including a Wellness Resource Fair, Wellness Activity Fair and much more. See schedule of offerings below.
  • On Wednesday, University Organist Dr. Colin Campbell will perform in concert in San Antonio with the UTSA Mariachi Band. The performance features his composition, Rapsodia del Río Grande.
  • The Celebration with Love Concert will be held in our CFPA Friday and features TAMIU faculty members Dr. Yu-Mei Huang and Dr. Xiaohu Zhou who are joined by their daughter, Alina Zhou.
  • Also Friday, celebrate the life of Laredo and national icon Jovita Idar. Her contributions have been celebrated nationwide since the release of the United States Mint’s Commemorative Quarter honoring her.
  • We’re hosting ‘Tributo a Jovita Idar” to share her contributions as a Mexican-American journalist, activist, and suffragist. Say her name and find out more. The event includes thoughts from Dr. Irma Cantú, TAMIU associate professor of Spanish, and Rebekah Arenaz, University College lecturer, and a special performance by TAMIU’s Ballet Folklórico under the direction of Nayeli Lopez Diaz.
  • This Saturday, you’ve got a free chance to help your future soar at the Aviation, Aeronautics and Aerospace Recruitment Fair Saturday, Sept. 30. Find out about outstanding career and internship opportunities in this dynamic industry. It’s open to all.
  • Looking ahead, mark your calendar for Maroon Madness on Oct. 17, Make a Difference Day on Oct. 21 and the 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s here on Nov 4.

TAMIU Hosts ‘Tributo a Jovita Idar’ Honoring a Laredo National Icon this Friday, Sept. 29

TAMIU will host a special event celebrating the contributions of Laredo and national icon Jovita Idar on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre. Admission to “Tributo A Jovita Idar: Honoring a Laredo National Icon” is free of charge and open to the public.

TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Hosts Several Events this September

As the semester at TAMIU begins, several events are on the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts calendar. All events are free and open to the public.

TAMIU Faculty Member Performs His 'Rapsodia del Río Grande' with UTSA Orchestra in San Antonio Wednesday

The concert, Rapsodia Mexicana, happening Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the UTSA Recital Hall, includes performances by Dr. Colin Campbell, TAMIU associate professor of Music and interim chair of the TAMIU Department of Fine and Performing Arts. The evening will also feature the UTSA Mariachi band Los Paisanos. A special featured performance of Rapsodia del Río Grande, a musical composition by Campbell, will be performed.

Career, Internship Opportunities Sky High at First Aviation, Aeronautics & Aerospace Recruitment Fair at TAMIU Sept. 30

TAMIU students, graduates, and members of the Laredo community at large are encouraged to take part in this outstanding career and internship opportunity in a dynamic industry. The Laredo event is the only recruitment event in Texas. Attendees will have such opportunities with the Federal Aviation Administration, Homeland Security, and others. Presentations and networking will be offered by agency leaders and industry representatives such as the Latinos Pilots Association and Latinas in Aviation.

TAMIU Athletics Update

TAMIU is a member of the Lone Star Conference and competes in 11 sports: volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, softball, baseball, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's golf.
