Safety Tip of the Month

Fire Prevention Week

Charge into Fire Safety!

Fire Prevention Week™ takes place October 5–11, and this year’s theme is Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home. The campaign focuses on how to use lithium-ion batteries safely, reminding everyone to buy, charge, and recycle them properly to help prevent fires.

Charge into Fire Safety: 3 Steps

  1. Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
  2. Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.
  3. Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit call2recycle.org to find a recycling spot near you.

Don't Forget Your Smoke Alarms!

Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they are properly installed and working. Make sure every level of your home has a working smoke alarm, test them monthly, and replace batteries at least once a year—or sooner if your alarm chirps. Having reliable smoke alarms gives you and your family critical time to escape if a fire starts.

Happy Fall! As the weather begins to change, it’s a great time to adjust your landscaping habits for the season. Here are some simple tips to guide you to a healthy landscape as the season changes:

  • Adjust your irrigation schedule – Plants need less water as temperatures drop. Reduce watering frequency to avoid overwatering.
  • Mulch your yard – A layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture, keeps roots insulated and reduces evaporation.
  • Plant water-wise plants – Fall is a great season for planting! Choose drought-tolerant plants that thrive in our climate.
  • Check for leaks – Inspect sprinklers and drip systems for leak and breaks to prevent water waste.

Batteries Don’t Belong in Your Carts! Please don’t place batteries in your trash or recycling carts. Improper disposal can cause fires and safety hazards.

Instead, properly dispose of them at:

  • Community e-waste collection events
  • Local drop-off facilities
  • By calling Customer Service to schedule a convenient e-waste pickup

Let’s keep our community safe and sustainable!
