Thank you for a great week and for taking the time to visit with our teachers on Parent Conference Day. If you weren’t able to connect with them yet, they are still scheduling conferences throughout the next few weeks. Our attendance goal for this school year is 95.9%—let’s just round it up to 96%! 😄 And guess what? Self-Awareness
When our students have self-awareness it means that they have a strong understanding of themselves. They understand their thoughts, emotions, strengths and challenges, and their needs. Students having self-awareness is the biggest building block for SEL success. When students use their self-awareness skills, they are also able to understand how their emotions, thoughts, and values influence their behavior. Students who have self-awareness skills also have optimism, self-confidence, and a growth mindset when they are faced with a challenge.
Why is Self-Awareness Important?
Self-awareness is important because students need skills in this area before they can tackle the other SEL competencies. Self-awareness makes students confident learners and plants the seeds of independence that they need in and outside of the classroom and allows them to make better choices. Students who have self-awareness skills know how to ask for help, try different strategies when faced with a problem or when they feel their emotions escalating, and use a growth mindset when challenged.
A Deeper Dive into Self-Awareness
Below is more information to know before teaching self-awareness skills to your students.
Identifying Emotions
Students, especially the younger ones, do not always have the vocabulary to accurately identify their emotions. It is important to provide them with vocabulary for different emotions and teach them what different emotions feel like. When students can identify their emotions, they can think about what causes them to feel that way.
Accurate Self-Perception
When students have self-perception they understand that how they see themselves may be different from how others see them. Students who have skills in this area are able to take a look at themselves and understand their strengths, weaknesses, and accurately perceive their emotions and what causes them to feel certain ways.
Recognizing Strengths
Students recognizing their own strengths and interests is key to their growth as independent motivated individuals. Students can recognize their strengths when they can accurately and honestly state what they are good at. It also allows them to see their weaknesses and know when to ask for help.
Self-Confidence
Students who are self confident believe in themselves and know that they can do challenging things. This fosters independence and starts the process of students being able to solve problems on their own because they believe in their abilities.
Self-Efficacy
Self-efficacy is the belief that you have the ability to perform a task and do difficult things. Kids who have skills in this area know that they have the ability to face challenges. This is where a growth mindset can be fostered in students.

Breakfast & Lunch Visitors 🍎🥪
Now that our students have learned the cafeteria routines and expectations, we are excited to welcome breakfast and lunch visitors. Please help us reinforce cafeteria expectations: Ahora que nuestros estudiantes han aprendido las rutinas y expectativas de la cafetería, nos complace dar la bienvenida a los visitantes del desayuno y el almuerzo. Ayúdenos a reforzar las expectativas de la cafetería:
- Visitors will sit at the visitor table only with their child—not with other children or their friends. Los visitantes se sentarán en la mesa de visitas sólo con su hijo, no con otros niños o sus amigos.
- Students should not share food with others. Los estudiantes no deben compartir comida con otros.
- Students should remain in their seats and raise their hands if they need assistance. Los estudiantes deben permanecer en sus asientos y levantar la mano si necesitan ayuda.
- To help manage noise, students should use an indoor voice (Level 1) and converse only with a friend next to or across from them. Para ayudar a controlar el ruido, los estudiantes deben usar un tono de voz interior (Nivel 1) y conversar solo con un amigo que esté a su lado o frente a ellos.

Educational Student Travel
I am excited to share that one of AISD's dedicated teachers, Ms. Jessica Ortiz, will be leading two amazing student travel opportunities in 2027 through EF Educational Tours. These experiences are open to students in our district, and I encourage you to learn more about them. Please note: This is a non-school or district sponsored trip. Me complace anunciar que una de las dedicadas maestras de AISD, la Sra. Jessica Ortiz, organizará dos increíbles viajes estudiantiles en 2027 a través de EF Educational Tours. Estas experiencias están abiertas a los estudiantes de nuestro distrito y los invito a conocerlas mejor. Nota: Este viaje no está patrocinado por la escuela ni el distrito.
Educational travel provides students with the chance to explore new destinations, immerse themselves in different cultures, and build lifelong skills such as independence, resilience, and confidence. I truly believe these opportunities enrich a child’s education in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. Volunteer Sign Up
Many hands make light work and we love our volunteers. We depend on our parents and volunteers to help make the best learning environment that we can for our kids. We encourage you to be an approved volunteer to help make a difference at school, sponsor fine arts events, chaperone field trips and work with students. All volunteers must submit an online application (every year) and upload a copy of your unexpired government-issued photo ID to the volunteer application.
Muchas manos facilitan el trabajo y amamos a nuestros voluntarios. Dependemos de nuestros padres y voluntarios para ayudar a crear el mejor ambiente de aprendizaje posible para nuestros hijos. Jones Performance Shirt
If your student will be in any of our choirs or is in 5th grade performing arts, they’ll need a black performance shirt. It’s the same shirt as last year, so if it still fits, no need to purchase a new one. The deadline to order is October 1. $15! Si su estudiante participará en alguno de nuestros coros o está en 5.º grado, necesitará una camiseta negra de actuación.
