Principal’s Summary
Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter
This has been a short half term with the additional bank holiday breaks. Nevertheless, there been a steady focus on high quality lessons which are designed to support students in order to access our curriculum but also ensure each students is challenged to meet their academic potential. I have been incredibly impressed with all student’s application in and out of the classroom since we have returned. Students have continued to showcase our Humberston Way principles including our ‘charm’ values. I have been in the fortunate position to circulate students during the school day to catch up on their personal successes and achievements. Each one sharing their sense of pride. This is now a critical time for all Year 11 students across the country as they make the final preparations to embark on their GCSE examinations. Our Class of 2026 are no different and I have been impressed with the maturity and ownership of our eldest year group. They are role models to the lower years, and I continue to urge each one of them to be organised, focus on their revision and access every opportunity for intervention. My thanks go to the staff and students’ commitment to attend the revision sessions that took place during the holidays to give them every opportunity to achieve. We of course wish every single one of them the very best of luck. This term has seen the conclusion of our senior student application process. I hope you enjoy the article written within this newsletter about the process and successful candidates but it also seems fitting to capture this years’ team one last time (picture below) and thank you for their invaluable leadership this academic year. Please enjoy the articles we have in this issue of our newsletter. I hope it allows you to reflect like I have on the amazing opportunities that Humberston Academy students receive regularly. I often speak to the student body about ‘the more you put in, the more you get out’. The student who consumes themselves in the extra-curricular activities we provide are most often the happier, more confident and positive of our student body. With new clubs introduced this Summer Term, I hope you can encourage your child to take part and thrive. Mr Shoubridge
Environmental Summary
This academic year, the Environmental Team have once again been pro-active with their approach to raising awareness and supporting our environment. At the beginning of each year, an audit takes place regarding all matters regarding the environment. As a result of the audit, an action plan is created, focusing on areas for improvement and opportunities for the year ahead. This goes towards our Eco School Status which we should achieve in June. As part of the audit, we completed a ‘carbon footprint survey’, as a result of completing this review, we were recognised by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ as an establishment pro-actively working towards a more sustainable approach and were awarded £4,000 to go towards a mural to capture our community, this will be completed in the Summer Term. More news to come on this project. As the year has progressed, we have seen an increase in members due to our recruitment drive. The first task for our newer members was to create posters to share with our community; one on reduce use of water and another on protecting our oceans. Environmental Lead interviews have now taken place. Our congratulations to all shortlisted applicants and well done to Violet Fursey and Beesan Siam who have been appointed to the role of Environmental Lead. In addition to this the Environmental Team has met with representatives from Caterlink in order to challenge single use plastics and locally sourced and sustained produce. Both agendas have been well received and our catering team have made significant changes to improve these areas. The Environmental Team has also delivered an assembly to Year 7 and 8 about their approach and how they are able to support and enhance our community. This was a great opportunity to share their passions and develop wider skills such as public speaking. Finally, we have a beach clean and litter pick planned for later this term as we continue to not only enhance our own school site but our wider community as well. The Environmental Team
Year 10 Media Day
During term 5 students within the media department worked hard to create ideas for their media coursework. As part of our provision as a department we are able to offer a day where students can work on creating their photography for this. The support in place is to help give the students the expert guidance to create studio level photography within the classroom. Student were excellent on the day with outfit changes, make up stations, wardrobes full of clothing and some excellent confident poses. ( some of them could be in Runway magazine for sure!) The students absolutely loved the day and took on the challenge doing the media department proud. We cant wait to see their coursework creations from this day and for the all the hard work to pay off when it comes to their results day in just over a years time! Mr Oram
Humberston Academy senior students 2026-2027
We are delighted to announce that our senior students for the next academic year have been chosen. Following a gruelling interview process, Head Boy Logan, Head Girl Annabel, Deputy Head Boy Ollie and Deputy Head Girl Charlotte, were able to separate themselves from the crowd and were deservedly awarded the coveted positions. 26 students applied for our senior student positions. A very high volume of these applications were incredibly strong. Initially, it was very difficult to shortlist students for interview. Eventually, 11 students, made the shortlist for interview. A full day of interviews were planned with Mr Ashford (Chair of Governors), Mr Shoubridge (Principal) and I. Genuinely, I could not believe just how well our students prepared and conducted themselves. Every interview was incredibly strong. Students spoke eloquently, passionately and were able to identify areas of school life that they would like to positively contribute towards improving. At the end of a long day, it was almost impossible to separate our students. After much deliberation and reading through our notes. The decision was finally made to offer the positions out to Logan, Annabel, Ollie and Charlotte, who were our strongest candidates on the day. I spent most of the day with a big smile on my face. The energy, passion and enthusiasm displayed was inspiring. I was genuinely taken aback by the quality on display and the amount of effort and dedication that had been applied to these interviews. We look forward to inviting all applicants to join our wider senior student team as prefects. Training for these roles will be offered during half-term 6. Thank you all very much for your applications and for your efforts during the interviews. I look forward to working more closely with you all over the course of the next year. Mr Edwards
Spring Cup Humberston Academy enjoyed a hugely successful and memorable experience at the DRET Spring Cup, with students showcasing outstanding determination, teamwork, and sporting excellence across both hockey and rugby competitions. The girls’ hockey teams were superb throughout the tournament, competing with energy, resilience, and confidence against strong opposition from across the trust. Both the U13 and U15 squads battled their way through challenging fixtures to become deserved Plate Winners. The players demonstrated excellent teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day, with their commitment and positive attitude helping them achieve fantastic success for the academy. In rugby, the U13 boys produced an exceptional tournament performance to be crowned DRET Spring Cup Champions. From the opening game, the team displayed outstanding attacking rugby, strong defensive organisation, and excellent communication on the pitch. Their determination and work ethic allowed them to overcome tough opposition and secure the title in impressive fashion, making the entire academy proud. The U15 boys also represented Humberston Academy brilliantly, finishing in a very respectable 4th place overall in a highly competitive tournament. Alongside this achievement, the team were also recognised with the “Most Improved” award, highlighting the tremendous progress, resilience, and teamwork they showed across the competition. Their attitude and development throughout the event reflected the hard work they have put in all season. The combined efforts of all teams resulted in Humberston Academy finishing an outstanding 2nd place overall in the DRET Spring Cup standings — a fantastic achievement that reflects the talent, dedication, and commitment of our students and staff. Across every fixture and every competition, students represented Humberston Academy with pride, passion, and excellent sportsmanship. The support shown between teams and the determination displayed throughout the tournament created a fantastic atmosphere and made the event a huge success for everyone involved. Congratulations to all students and staff who took part and contributed to such an incredible achievement for Humberston Academy. Miss Glover
Humberston's Got Talent Humberston Academy was buzzing with excitement as students, staff, and families gathered for another fantastic evening of entertainment at Humberston’s Got Talent. The event showcased the incredible creativity, confidence, and musical talent of our students, with performances ranging from powerful vocals to energetic stage acts that kept the audience engaged throughout the night. A huge congratulations goes to this year’s winner, Poppy A, whose expressive and emotionally captivating singing performance earned a standing ovation from the crowd and high praise from the judges. Poppy’s confidence, stage presence, and vocal control made her a deserved winner and demonstrated the outstanding talent we have within our school community. The evening was made even more special by the involvement of former winner Paisley F, who returned this year as both a guest performer and judge. Paisley gave an excellent performance that reminded everyone why she was such a memorable previous champion, while also offering encouraging and thoughtful feedback to contestants throughout the evening. It was wonderful to see a former winner inspiring the next generation of performers. Our judging panel also featured Headteacher Mr Shoubridge and new member of staff Miss Smith, who both brought enthusiasm, humour, and encouragement to the event. Their positive comments and support helped create a warm and celebratory atmosphere for all performers. The audience played a big part in the evening too, enthusiastically supporting every act and helping make the event such a success. Humberston’s Got Talent continues to be a brilliant opportunity for students to develop confidence, perform in front of a live audience, and celebrate the vibrant performing arts culture at Humberston Academy. Mr Sleight
Sailability This term, four of our students have started an RYA Level 1 Dinghy Sailing course at Covenham Reservoir. Congratulations to Destiny, Edvards, Bella and Jazmine for everything they have achieved so far. They have made an excellent start in challenging conditions during their first three sessions, showing determination and enthusiasm as they got out onto the water to learn new skills. So far, the students have learned the parts of the boat, how steer using the tiller, control the sails, and sail in different directions in relation to the wind. They have also developed confidence on the water, and begun learning important safety procedures and teamwork skills. Covenham Sailability provide expert, inclusive sailing training, and we really appreciate Jude and her team giving up their time to provide this fantastic opportunity for our students. Mr Timson
Shine University Trip Some of our Year 9 students took part in the Shine Campus Visit on Thursday 14th May 2026. This was the first of three visits to the University of York as part of the Shine programme. The Shine programme aims to inspire, motivate and encourage students to achieve academic success and raise their aspirations towards higher education. Throughout the day, the students were supported by a Student Ambassador called Moses. They enjoyed getting to know more about him and hearing about his experiences at university life. The visit included a range of activities and quizzes focused on university life, including myth busting, budgeting, and a campus conundrum challenge. Students explored the university campus to find clues, which helped them learn more about the university, its colleges, courses, and the many activities on offer. Mrs Ling was particularly surprised to discover that there is even a hummus society, where students can try and discuss different types of hummus! The trip also included lunch in the university canteen, where the students enjoyed some very generous portions. The chicken burgers were especially popular. The next visit will take place in Year 10, when students will return for an overnight residential stay in student accommodation at the university. Miss Ling
Shine University Trip After a long journey, we finally arrived at the University of York, where the students jumped straight into activities including icebreakers, detective games, and then off to lunch for the first meal of the trip. The students were treated to huge portions and even a pudding! In the afternoon, the students took part in a lecture and independent research project about memory, led by a Psychology lecturer, before heading off to see their rooms. After some free time in the university dorms, it was back to the canteen for another huge portion of tasty food, socialising with students from other schools, and then onto the evening activities. First up were more icebreakers, including the challenge of writing as many biscuit names as possible on toilet roll! Students then enjoyed exploring some of the university’s society activities such as shield making, board games, badminton, and bench ball. After even more socialising with students from other schools, it was finally time to head back to their dorm rooms for a well-earned rest and recharge their batteries ready for Day 2. It was an early start for our Year 10s on Day 2 of the Shine Residential. After leaving the dorms, we headed straight to the canteen for a cooked breakfast to start the day. The students then took part in a seminar linked to yesterday’s psychology topic, focusing on eyewitness testimonies. The final activity centred around individual strengths and characteristics. Students discovered more about their own personal qualities and how these can help guide future career choices. To end the day, students received their Shine rewards before it was time to head back home to Grimsby. All of the students engaged brilliantly throughout the residential, with many making new friends from other schools. The next visit to the University of York for our Year 10 students will be when they begin their journey as Year 11 students in September 2026. Miss Ling
Trip to Hull Truck Theatre As part of GCSE Drama year 10 and 11 drama students enjoyed a visit to the theatre. We visited Hull Truck on 30th April to watch John Godber's Teechers 22' originally written in 1987, this socio political comedy addresses the wealth disparity, the lack of aspiration and the challenges students and teachers face. In this modern retake, we revisited Whitewall Academy and as a play within the play we are introduced to over 20 characters via three actors multi -rolling in this fast paced comedy. Our students were able to identify a variety of techniques they have been using in drama as well as analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of the delivery of the play. Students were quick to comment on how 'policitical' and hard hitting the play was, whilst at the same time as being highly entertaining. That to tell a story, actors do not need elaborate sets, costume changes and a large cast. Miss Wilson
Community Litter Pick Our Environmental Team took part in a community litter pick with the support of North East Lincolnshire Council Beach Safety Team and Cleethorpes Coastguards. Students also had the opportunity to speak to volunteers and gain guidance on how to remain safe at the beach with a focus on high tide risks. A great opportunity to work in partnership and take pride in our local community. Students were complimented by members of the public and were able to have a positive impact on the cleanliness of our beach and promenade. Mr Shoubridge
