November Newsletter Regent Farm First School

It has been another lovely month in school with lots of fantastic learning opportunities. The children have been taking part in curriculum learning linked to 'Regent Farm Respects'. They have been learning about other cultures, religions and thinking about how we can show respect to other people. The older children in school have been doing some work on equality and race.

We are all beginning to feel very festive and looking forward to sharing some special events with you - a reminder of the dates for decorations day and all the Christmas performances can be found at the end of the Newsletter.

In this Issue

Minister For Early Education

At the end of October we welcomed Minister Morgan to Regent Farm; it was an honour to show him our wonderful school. He joined in with some spooky fun and we spoke to him about some of the approaches we have taken at school to help our youngest children thrive.

Kindness Advent Calendar

In assembly next week we will be talking about advent across the world and what children look forward to through the month of December. We will be introducing the children to a Kindness Advent calendar to try and help them understand that sometimes it is the smallest gestures which can make the biggest difference. We will be displaying this in all our classrooms through the month of December and have asked the children if they can complete any of these things, or other random acts of kindness, at home. Please find a copy of this calendar below; we will also share it in the letters section of our school website.

Feeding Families

We are all aware how expensive this time of year can be. Feeding Families is a charity based in North East England that offers support, hope and security to those struggling to feed themselves and their family. If you feel you might need a food box over the festive season please complete the form using the link below. This is a completely confidential service and we'd encourage you to reach out if it might help.

Free School Meal Vouchers

Can we also remind you that children who have applied for free school meals will get a £30 voucher per child to support their food shopping over the school holidays. If you think you may be eligible please use the link below and you will get a very quick answer. We will then be able to issue you a voucher before the Christmas break.

Reception Applications

Reception September 2025 - The application process has opened for children who wish to join our reception classes next year. Applications cannot be made directly to school, but must go to through Newcastle City Council using the weblink below. The deadline for application is 15th January 2025. We still have a number of children in our nursery who have not applied yet, if you need any help with your application please speak to a member of staff.

Important Messages

  • Early Pick Ups We have an increasing number of children being collected part way through the school day. Children should only be picked up early if they have a medical appointment and evidence of this appointment must be shown in the school office.
  • Cold Weather The weather has certainly got colder recently. Please ensure children come to school with coats, hats, gloves etc and these are clearly named. Can we also remind you to take care on the paths and yard if we have ice or snow, Mr Laidler will clear a path, but the ground will remain slippery.
  • Parking I am again asking parents not to park on the zig zags at the front of school. This area must remain clear, please do not park or pull in to drop your child off; all children must be accompanied in to school by an adult to ensure they arrive safely. The car park at the back of school should also not be used by parents in the morning, even if you are dropping off late to school.
  • Trainers Some children are attending school everyday in multi-coloured sports trainers: these are not part of the school uniform. Please ensure children are wearing black shoes.

Curriculum Information

Early Years

This half term nursery have been looking at seasonal changes. At the start of half term they found their very own pumpkin patch on the field where every child used their special ticket to buy and take home a pumpkin! To link to the next ‘book of the week’ the children uncovered a big creature in our forest – he had terrible teeth, terrible claws and purple prickles all over his back...it was the Gruffalo! The children have loved learning about the nocturnal woodland creatures and animals in this book. Through the book Owl Babies, the children have also be thinking about some of their own fears.

To introduce the start of winter and the seasons changing, Nursery are currently learning about Stick Man which will then lead into our Christmas stories.

This half term, the children in Reception have been learning all about night and day. They began the topic by looking at the celebration of 'Diwali'. They made Diya lamps, tasted Barfi sweets and learnt some fantastic bhangra dancing. They were then taken on an adventure by the rough, tough Night Pirates who led them to a treasure island and helped them retrieve golden coins. During this, the children created a fantastic disguise to hide the pirate ship from the evil pirates! This week, we are exploring a book centered around the stars. The children are introduced to a 'Planetarium' and they will create their very own in our outdoor areas. The children will become astronomers, create constellations and discover why the little girl needs to return the stars in the night sky.

Key Stage 1

Fire - Fireworks, Fire Pit, Fire Safety: Year 1 have covered it all! In History the children have been exploring why we celebrate Bonfire Night, the Gunpowder Plot, uncovering the reasons behind why Guy Fawkes and his friends wanted the King dead and debating whether or not they were right to create their plan. The children enjoyed acting out the characters in 'The Quiet Little Firework,' thinking about how they are feeling and what they might be saying to each other.

They loved their trip to the fire pit, toasting marshmallows and have written amazing instructions on how to stay safe when you are there. What an amazing start to the half term Year 1 have had. Next stop...Nativity Rehearsals!

Year 2 were very excited at the start of the term when a strange basket of objects was accidentally delivered to our school. The children used their detective skills to identify the items and find out who they belong to. All the clues lead them to Australia and they have continued learning about this magnificent country through the book “Ella and the Ocean”. The children have been writing postcards and imagining what life is like down under! In Geography, the children have been comparing the weather and climate in Australia to the UK, and also Antarctica.

In Art, the children are using the artwork by Jackson Pollock to create their own emotive artwork. The children have enjoyed painting in the style of Jackson Pollock and being creative. In P.E, the children are developing their gymnastic skills. They've been developing their rolls, balances, and creating short sequences of movements and shapes. The children are continuing to learn about Judaism in R.E after visiting the local synagogue at the start of the month. Year 2, asked some great questions and the members of the Synagogue were blown away by the children's knowledge and curiosity. They'll be comparing the festival of Hanukah over the next few weeks with other religious festivals.

Key Stage 2

Year 3 are focused on our ‘Regent Farm Respects topic’ and the children are learning about the Hindu religion through stories, artefacts and a visit to a Hindu place of worship. The children have been using the story of Rama and Sita as a stimulus in their writing and they've created their own wonderful stories. The children thoroughly enjoyed our visit from the author and illustrator Adeola Sokunbi, and it was an absolute delight to have her in school to deliver a workshop with our classes. We were also lucky enough to have visit from a PHD student who talked to the children about her job as a scientist. The children showed lots of curiosity and asked some interesting questions. Our science topic this term is light and the children are busy planning a light experiment. They have particularly enjoyed making shadow puppets and presenting a shadow puppet play to the rest of the class!

This term has been a whirlwind of exciting learning and activities in Year 4! In Maths, the children have been focusing on mastering their times tables through engaging and interactive games to build confidence and speed. In English, they were inspired by the story of Walter Tull, the first black officer in the army and second black professional footballer . A special highlight was exploring postcards, telegrams and other objects from Mrs Moore's Grandad who served in World War II. In Science, the children investigated our school grounds, searching for vertebrates and invertebrates, while in History they celebrated Black History Month and learned all about incredible individuals and their achievements.

Year 4 also had some fantastic visitors this term. Author Adeola Sokunbi inspired the whole school with her stories and illustrations. Visits from the scientist Lucy Mae from the Newcastle University, and employees from the company Mott McDonald, encouraged us to explore exciting career possibilities. Finally, Year 4 took on the challenge of applying and interviewing to become lunchtime buddies, developing their confidence and leadership skills.
