AHS Launch Spotlight Award
Citing the school’s dedication to diversity, equity, inclusivity, data-informed decision-making, and community engagement, Appoquinimink High School was recognized as Delaware’s Launch Spotlight Award recipient for Launch Into Your Future Month 2025. This award highlights one high school in the state that serves as a model for equitable, career-connected postsecondary readiness. In tandem with the “Launch” Award, AHS will receive the ACAC School of Excellence Award and is nominated for the Leo Reddy Career Readiness Award. Winners of this national award receive funds to benefit career programming. AHS was credited for the “creativity, intentional planning, and student-centered programming you showcased were remarkable, and we are honored to recognize your efforts, time, and commitment. As we work together to empower every student — whether pursuing college, skilled trades, certification programs, apprenticeships, workforce pathways, or military service — your leadership exemplifies the spirit of Launch into Your Future Month.” See more pictures here!
Odessa High School wins Delaware Envirothon Championship
Please join us in congratulating Odessa High School’s FFA students and agriscience team on its first-place win in the 2026 Delaware Envirothon Championship! This was the team's second consecutive win! Now in its milestone 30th year, Envirothon is a statewide environmental education competition sponsored by DNREC. This year, nine high schools and one 4-H club fielded a record 23 teams that spent the school year preparing to test their knowledge of aquatic ecology, soils and land use, wildlife, forestry, and the current environmental issue of nonpoint source pollution mitigation. After more than three hours of testing, the Odessa team was crowned state champion and will represent Delaware at the National Conservation Foundation International Envirothon in Mississippi this July.
OHS Environmental & Natural Resources Career Development Team is state champions
In other news, Odessa FFA is proud to share that our Environmental & Natural Resources Career Development Team was officially recognized today as Delaware State Champions and has earned the honor of representing Delaware at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this October! Conducted alongside its sister event, the Delaware Envirothon, this challenging competition tested students in the core areas of Aquatics, Air Quality, Wildlife, and Soils, while also requiring teams to deliver an oral presentation focused on Best Management Practices (BMPs) addressing nonpoint source pollution and its impacts from both agricultural and urban land uses on our waterways. Competitors also completed a comprehensive general knowledge exam spanning all topic areas. Competing against five additional FFA teams from across the state, Odessa FFA members delivered an outstanding performance, led by:
- Julie Hackett — 1st Place Individual
- Ryan Delaney — 6th Place Individual
- Kiera Greer — 7th Place Individual
- Tyler Ginn — 8th Place Individual
We are incredibly proud of how they represented Odessa FFA and the spirit of agricultural and environmental stewardship. Please join us in congratulating these students as they prepare to take the national stage in Indianapolis this fall!
2026 Congressional Art Competition
The 2026 Delaware Congressional Art Competition, hosted by Congresswoman Sarah McBride, showcases winning finalists' high school artwork at the Delaware Contemporary in April. At the reception, Appoquinimink High School’s Onna Parish was announced as the second-place winner! Her work will hang in Congresswoman McBride’s office. Also from AHS, Sebastian Andrew Walko and Elena Ruberto, and MHS’s Allison Nguyen, were announced as finalists. Not every student who submitted became a finalist — four ASD students who submitted and were chosen as finalists, with Onna winning second place. With Congresswoman McBride's office having double the number of submissions this year, being named a finalist is very exciting! Learn more here!

Best Communities for Music Education & Niche 2026-2027!
Appoquinimink School District has earned the “Best Communities for Music Education” designation for the 11th consecutive year! For the 10th year, Appoquinimink has been named the #1 School District in Delaware by the independent education ranking service Niche. The “Best Communities for Music Education” award program recognizes and celebrates outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to and access to music education. This designation showcases our district’s commitment to access to music education and continued growth. Earning this for the 11th consecutive year is a testament to the dedication of our amazing staff. The Niche rankings include data for more than 90,000 public schools, 30,000 private schools, and 11,000 school districts nationwide. While traditional rankings rely almost exclusively on metrics like test scores and academic performance, Niche’s rankings combine user input — ratings from current students, alumni, and parents — with quantitative data from sources like the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities, extracurricular activity opportunities, and more.
Math Updates: Celebrating Student Success!
We are excited to share the outstanding achievements of our students in this year’s Math League, MathCounts, and American Mathematics Competition (AMC). Their hard work, persistence, and problem-solving skills were on full display across regional, state, and national levels.
MathCounts
Our AGW MathCounts team had an impressive showing, earning 3rd place in the state while competing against approximately 75 students across 7 teams. This accomplishment highlights their dedication and strong preparation throughout the season.
Math League
Our Math League teams had a successful season across multiple grade levels:
- 7th Grade (AGW): Two teams (Tiger Sharks and Hammerheads) qualified for the state invitational by placing in the top 3 in Region 4.
- 7th Grade (CBMS): One student qualified individually for the state invitational as an At-Large participant—an impressive achievement as only the top individual scorers in each region advance.
- 8th Grade (AGW): Two teams (Tiger Sharks and Great Whites) qualified for states, with the Tiger Sharks earning 3rd place in the state overall.
- 9th Grade (AHS): One team qualified for the state invitational from Region 6.
- 10–12 Grade (AHS & OHS): Both schools had teams qualify for the state invitational from Region 6.
Across all levels, qualifying for the state competition required teams to place in the top 3 within their region, making these accomplishments especially noteworthy.
AMC (American Mathematics Competition)
Our students also demonstrated exceptional achievement on the national stage. This year, one student scored in the top 5% nationally, while another earned placement in the top 10% nationally—an outstanding accomplishment that reflects a high level of mathematical thinking and dedication. We are incredibly proud of all of our students for their effort and commitment, and grateful to the teachers and coaches who support their success. See more pictures here!

Silver Lake Elementary hosts Leadership Day
Silver Lake Elementary recently celebrated its annual Leadership Day! SLE is a Leader in Me Lighthouse School, which means the school follows a comprehensive framework that nurtures student leadership, fosters a culture of trust, and boosts academic success. Leadership Day provides students with the opportunity to show the community the skills they've learned over the course of the school year — leadership, problem-solving, and much more. Kudos to SLE's students for a job well done! You can find the full gallery of pictures here!
Lorewood Grove Elementary students create escape rooms!
Since January 2026, our 3rd-grade students at Lorewood Grove Elementary have been building their technology and problem-solving skills by learning how to use Google Slides in creative and innovative ways. As a culminating project, each student designed and created their very own interactive escape room! Using coding techniques within Slides, they programmed responses that guided players to different slides based on their answers. To celebrate this exciting achievement, families and students from across the school came together to experience the escape rooms firsthand. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the creativity, perseverance, and hard work of our 3rd graders. We are incredibly proud of these students for their dedication and the impressive projects they brought to life! See the full gallery here!
Elementary Choir Festival
In what's always a lively, fun event, these pictures were taken at our annual Elementary Choir Festival! Be sure to scroll through the gallery to see all the pictures of our district's up-and-coming vocalists! We want to give a special thank-you to former Appoquinimink administrator Voni Perrine for serving as the festival's clinician, and to Appoquinimink High School's chorus students for their performance! Teacher Apprentice Week
During National Apprenticeship Week, April 26-May 2, the Delaware Department of Education is celebrating new pathways into the teaching profession. Through the Paraprofessional Registered Occupation (PRO), districts like ours can grow their own talent by tapping into two powerful pipelines: recent Teacher Academy graduates and current paraprofessionals already serving students every day. Two of our paraprofessionals were interviewed by DDOE and highlighted on its social media pages.
Mari Biscieglia
"The Teacher Apprentice program opens doors for experienced paraeducators to advance their careers and become certified teachers of record while still receiving their pay and benefits as school district employees. For most working adults, taking an unpaid leave of absence to complete student teaching is just not feasible. The Teacher Apprentice program creates a path that maintains the Apprentice's income while allowing them to learn under the tutelage of highly qualified teachers side by side in the classrooms where they already work. You can learn a lot about teaching in college courses, but the nuances of classroom management, relationship building, decision-making, and the myriad of factors teachers have to weigh and consider in the course of the day are best learned through the hands-on experience of an apprenticeship. The year-long residency in my second year helped me find my footing and allowed me to try different lessons and revise things and try again. A traditional, semester-long student teaching placement just doesn't allow room for that type of learning and craft development. The first year of teaching in your own classroom is hard. There are so many things you can't anticipate, and it takes time to find your rhythm and figure out what works for you and your students. That said, I feel like I was much better prepared for the challenge of my first year having spent two years in the Teacher Apprentice program, learning from amazing, experienced educators who helped guide me down this path."
Sharon Livingston
"I believe in the Teacher Registered Apprenticeship program because it creates a supportive, hands-on pathway into the profession, allowing educators to learn and grow in real classroom settings. I believe strongly in the power of mentorship, and this program ensures new teachers receive the guidance and feedback they need to succeed. Ultimately, it strengthens both educators and student outcomes, making it a powerful investment in the future of education."
Safety reminder for families – senior games
This communication was emailed to all district families on April 23, 2026: Dear ASD Families, As we approach the end of the school year – especially for our seniors – we want to once again ask our students and families for their support surrounding senior games. In particular, we’re referencing the game referred to as “Senior Water War” or “Senior Assassin.” The game involves high school seniors targeting classmates with water or sometimes Nerf guns. The winner of the game is the last person who wasn’t sprayed. On the surface, we understand that this seems like a fun game for students to play during their last few months of school. The challenge is the growing prevalence of fake or toy guns that are manufactured to look like real, authentic weapons. Many toy guns no longer have any traditional markings to indicate they are not real, such as the orange tip. For the past several years, police departments across the country have been issuing strong warnings about the senior assassin game and the general use of fake weapons because of the risk they pose when bystanders witness or report activity and law enforcement respond. Additionally, this trend is especially concerning in our district because of the proactive safety measures we have in place surrounding our school premises and sports facilities. One of these proactive safety measures is artificial intelligence embedded in camera streams to detect weapons. This artificial intelligence, known as ZeroEyes, detects weapons, and sends the images to the ZeroEyes Operation Center (ZOC) which is staffed 24/7/365. The experts at ZOC then verify the threat and dispatch alerts to local first responders in as fast as three (3) to five (5) seconds from detection. I am once again asking our families to please speak to their children about the use of fake weapons, particularly anywhere near school property. We are committed to ensuring the utmost safety of our schools. As part of that commitment, we now have state-of-the-art technology in place to ensure we can respond as quickly as possible to an incident. With that technology in place, we simply can’t have anyone on our campuses using fake weapons, even as part of innocent play. In the past two years, and just in the last few weeks, we have had several false alarms with ZeroEyes because of senior water games that were taking place around our schools. We need to make sure our students understand how dangerous these situations can be. The safety and security of our students is our top priority, always. Partnering with our families is necessary to ensure our students understand expectations to ensure our students and schools remain as safe as possible. Respectfully, Matt Burrows Superintendent
