The focus on females is apparent at Arellano Bravo Angus, Walnut Grove, Calif. “We have always prioritized phenotype, and, over the last five years, we have combined that with looking at genotype,” said Timoteo (Tim) Arellano, operations manager. “By purchasing elite donor cows from around the country, we have started to produce our own elite cattle that are attractive and have great genetic potential.” Many of these females are bred to VAR Conclusion 0234, an ORIgen bull purchased from Vintage Angus Ranch and “one of the top sires in the country,” Tim says.

"Cattle don't get to have holidays—we don't either."

In addition to Adhemar Sr. and his wife, María, second-generation Timoteo Sr., Adhemar Jr., Rafael and Maritza work on the operation. Tim’s wife, Aydee, is involved on the ranch, as well, and they hope their young sons, Sebastian and Timoteo Jr., will join the family business one day.

Two generations of Arellanos work together in developing their elite Angus herd. Tim’s father, Adhemar Arellano Bravo Sr., learned about ranching from his grandfather in Mexico. After Adhemar Sr. migrated to the United States in the ’80s, he established Arellano Bravo Angus on a 27-acre farm with 25 cows and six horses. The family is hosting its 18th annual bull sale Sept. 13, and its first female sale Oct. 12.

“We are a family-operated ranch, and we take a lot of pride in what we do,” Tim says. “We personally like to care for our cattle and have built our operation from the ground up.” Find more information on the family and their elite cattle at ArellanoBravoAngus.com.
