Digital Storytelling Portfolio

By Connor laws

About

This is a collection of my previous projects from digital storytelling, including revisions and additional media associated to each project. As you will find I have used many different assets and tools from online sources such as Adobe, Capcut, and Twine. From these tools I have found I enjoy Twine the most due to how it has inspired me to create more interactive stories similar to the one discussed in this portfolio. Some of the content that will be viewed have been posted on secondary websites such as Youtube, and Itch.io. Each item in this webpage will have its own "about" section that will discuss creative decisions and the process of making the media. Overall I feel I have discovered a lot about digital media through this course and hope to continue using some of the tools I have learned over this semester.

Poems & Prose

The Canary

The Canary was the first project I did for this class. What I did was revise an old poem I made a long time ago into the concrete poem seen on the left. The main message of the poem relates to toxic relationships, and self harming altruism. For some clarification this poem is based on the idea of coal miners taking canaries into caves to sense sulfur clouds.

The Canary's Tale

This will probably be the last addition/revision to The Canary I will make. This is a short story based on the poem I written from the perspective of the canary themself. I found that writing it from this perspective allowed for me to really represent the toxic relationship part of the poem. I did decide to make the poem's appearance similar to Grimm's fairytales as well as included a small revised version of the original poem at the start. I felt this made the poem feel aged and more mystical.

Visual Media

We live here too

This is a collection of flyer like slides with short statements made from the perspective of different creatures all sharing the same message "we live here too". This was designed to be something akin to a PSA about nature preservation including the visual perspective of different creatures. The images taken are all done by me through the use of different techniques and tools such as a drone. The ending result I feel creates a simple but impactful message when combined.

Iron giant video essay

This was the first video essay I have ever made, as well as the first video I have ever published on a site such as Youtube. The video goes over major themes and plot points found in The Iron Giant film, as well as some basic information on the creation of the film. I used a tool called capcut to make this video as well as clips from The Iron Giant film. While most of the audio is my own recording some audio and all video media is owned by Warner Bros. Copyright Warner Bros. Discover, Inc.

Iron giant video prose

This video was made as an addition to the video essay. while the video essay was made to be explanatory this video was made in pure admiration. The video uses Adobe video editing and assets to create a fictitious scenario. The scenario is meant to highlight the message of the film as well as how the message has actually affected my way of thinking. I tried to use the tools I had access to with the best of my abilities but the video isn’t meant to be anything too crazy.

Interactive Media

The Book of Fates

This is probably my biggest project from this semester. This is an interactive story made from Twine that offers the player the ability to endlessly loop around in the story while creating differing paths to the same goal. Not only does the collective text make this the longest piece of media I made but the necessity to learn Twine programming and story layout made it a time consuming endeavor. To this project I have added AI images generated through Adobe image generation, as well as uploaded it to Itch.io for in browser playing. I will likely continue to make these kinds of stories in the future, but intend on avoiding the use of AI images, for personal satisfaction.
