Message from the Leadership Team
Dear Noadswood families, The heatwave..... Quite the week – one during which it was hard to do anything well, or to come up with a plan to suit everyone, but this school family pulled together to do the best it could. I am always genuinely so thankful for that. As you know, we took the decision to open for shorter periods in the morning and into the early afternoon rather than full day closures, because of wanting continuity of connection and provision. Unsurprisingly, our part days were no shining example of high attendance, but those that came were so brilliant, and got on with it all so well. It meant we could box off some of the internal mock exams we had on the calendar (Congratulations Y10!), and we could continue with some sort of abnormal ‘normal’. The model today, of five, shorter periods, with more but shorter breaks seems, at the moment, to us, to be one we would perhaps consider shifting to more nimbly to for future extreme heat events of this sort. But of course, it then presents the challenge and worry of children moving home 1ish, when temperatures have already begun to intensify. That said, referring to the Met Office, they built the most around about 2-4pm this week, which we tracked carefully. If we closed for the day, as some of our friends did, quite understandably, and moved to online work set on Frog, we know realistically, in sweltering temperatures at home, there would be no consistency of uptake of work, and it would be tough for children to produce work of quality. A lot to think about, and beyond these immediate logistical questions, too. I attended a meeting today that included senior officers at the Local Authority who will be pulling together all the feedback – yours, mine, everyone’s - from this week and we will keep talking and keep planning. If you have a creative idea that you think could help, please drop us a line at: Weather@noadswood.hants.sch.uk No idea dismissed – we are all working on this together, and I am grateful to you all, to the students and all of our colleagues for this week. By the way – if your idea is, purchase air con of some kind, I am keen to explore ways to do this with the least possible spend (because there is no funding stream we can access for it currently) from any parents and carers with knowledge of this sort of thing. what could help us most easily and cost effectively? Drop us a line at the email address above! The rest of this week's newsletter is filled with more but different thanks! A real highlight has been our Year 5 Arts Week. It has been wonderful to welcome Year 5 into school and for colleagues from our and their schools to see them throwing themselves into activities including musical theatre, African drumming and drama workshops. The arts are such an important part of education, helping young people develop confidence, creativity, teamwork and self-expression, and it has been a joy to see these qualities on display throughout the week. Huge thanks to Mrs Costa, Mr Watkins and Mrs Smith. We also loved welcoming our Year 6 families to our Moving Up Evening. Thank you to everyone who attended. Just before temperatures soared! I would like to thank Beau, Neave, Archie, Lydia, William and Morgan for their super speeches welcoming our new (or returning) families. True young professionals. A big thank you as well to our PSA for running another successful pre-loved uniform sale. Your support makes a real difference to our community. If you have any questions, please contact us at movingup@noadswood.hants.sch.uk We can’t wait to welcome our new students back for their Moving Up Days next week. My final thanks this week are to the ten singers from the This is Me Choir who sang their football hearts out to our good friends at Carpathia Care Home during their Goal-den Moments World Cup fun on a hot old Wednesday afternoon, after the school had closed to everyone else. This took commitment from our children, though we did benefit from air con in the reception area where we sing and ice lollies after. I would like to personally thank Rosie, Rhys, Sofia, Sophia, Abigail, Sienna, Indi, Blossom, Finn and Cian, plus Mrs B Wyse, Mrs M Wyse and Mrs Merrifield, for putting others before themselves, and bringing joy.
As we head into what looks set to be another warm weekend, we hope all the youngsters enjoy the sunshine safely: staying hydrated, wearing sun protection and taking extra care around water. Whether they’re visiting the beach, rivers, lakes or pools, please ensure all our young people are supervised at all times and follow water safety guidance. A moment of caution, and reiterating safety messages, no matter the moans and groans from the young ones, can make all the difference. As we know from our twice daily iterations of it all each day at school this week. Thank you, as always, for your continued support, partnership and challenge. Have the best possible weekend. Best wishes, Kathryn Marshall and the Noadswood Leadership Team
Safeguarding Guidance
In the light of the recent weather event, and reported incidents and tragedies around the water, it’s more important than ever to remind our young people about staying safe there – non-negotiable and vital advice. As you will know, whether at the beach, rivers, lakes, or swimming pools, young people should always swim in supervised areas, follow local safety signs and avoid entering the water alone or under the influence of peer pressure. Strong currents, cold water and hidden hazards can quickly turn a fun activity into a dangerous situation, even for confident swimmers. All of this is exacerbated by high and above normal high temperatures outside. We encourage families to talk openly and regularly about water safety, ensure children and young people understand your expectations as a family about this, that they understand their own limits, that they are never in the water alone, and that they know the importance of looking out for one another and seeking help the minute they notice anyone else struggling or missing.
