Welcome back to DSJ Weekly!
We've had a wonderful week at Dodworth St John's! We've had plenty of exciting things going on, and the children have represented the school wonderfully at every turn.
Year 5 have had a particularly busy week - Junior Wardens on Tuesday was excellent, and they had a fantastic day with Mrs Sumner yesterday at Merton Park. I know that the staff who accompanied them were super proud of them, and so am I. When the children wear their uniform, they represent our lovely community, and they did so very well this week. I particularly enjoyed being 'rescued' by the Junior Wardens, who were surprisingly strong at lifting the stretcher I was tied on to... I can't lie - I was a little bit nervous at first, but they handled it like pros!
On Wednesday afternoon Mrs Whiteley, Mrs Taylor and I attended an important training afternoon at Jerry Clay English Hub, who are supporting us going forward with Phonics. We also received our Read Write Inc resources, which I know the staff are excited to get stuck in to so we can deliver this wonderful Phonics scheme of learning to the children.
I had the joy of stepping back in to the classroom on a few occasions this week in Year 4/5 and Year 6. As much as I love my job, standing in front of a class again was a delight, and the children really impressed me with their knowledge and their behaviours for learning already - a good sign, so early on in the year!
Our Celebration Assembly this morning was just wonderful. We really do have the most polite, confident and happy children here and it's always a pleasure to celebrate this.
Have a wonderful weekend folks!
Mr Smith
The engagement from parents on ClassDojo has been terrific. I hope you're finding it a useful platform as we aim to improve the school's communication with you. Two classes have 100% parental engagement, and another two have engagement above 90%. This is fantastic, and I'd like to say a big thank you for coming on board.
The lovely folks from Rocksteady have been in school this week for their first session with our resident Rockstars.
Rocksteady is a wonderful initiative and a great opportunity for children to have a go at something new, and to thrive in an area of learning that is unique. I have seen children who are usually shy and quiet become confident rockstars during their performances! I would heartily encourage any children who might be interested to give it a go.
Please check the School Story on ClassDojo for the information letter.
A reminder that all children in EYFS and Key Stage 1 are entitled to a Free School Meal: a saving of roughly £400 over the course of the year!
If your child is in Key Stage 2, you may still be eligible to receive Free School Meals and retain these savings as your child enters Year 3 and beyond. To check your eligibility and apply, please visit https://www.barnsley.gov.uk/services/children-families-and-education/schools-and-learning/free-school-meals/
We politely ask that on PE days, any ear studs are covered before children come to school to mininimise the small risk of injury if they cannot be removed. However, if children are able to remove their ear studs themselves before PE, this is preferable.
