In mid‑April, Billy shared that he plans to close Brisbane Hardware at the end of May. He has been working with Economic Vitality Director Mitch Bull to explore future possibilities for the site, which he will continue to own. Right now, what Billy needs most is the community’s support as he enters this next chapter. The news naturally brings a sense of sadness - both for him and for the many residents his family has served over 63 years, since taking over the hardware store in 1963. Billy is preparing for knee surgery this summer, and once recovered, he will resume working with the City to determine the best long‑term use for the property. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stop by the store to wish him well as he wraps up operations. The City Council also intends to formally recognize Billy for his decades of service and stewardship of this true Brisbane institution at its May 21, 2026 meeting.

Youth Advisory Committee's Annual Presentation & Call for Applicants
As mentioned in the above item, the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) delivered their annual update to the City Council at the May 7th meeting - and they absolutely shined! Their seamless presentation, poise behind the lectern, and professionalism were praised. It takes courage to speak in a public forum, and these young leaders showed exactly why they’re already role models for the youth coming up behind them. We are also proud of the steady guidance their advisor Sara offers these 24 young individuals!
Do you know someone who'd be interested in serving on the YAC? Applications are now open for the 2026-27 school year! The deadline to apply is 9 AM on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Submissions will NOT be accepted after the deadline. Note: This application is only for Brisbane residents who will be in 7th - 12th grade in September, 2026. Applicants should complete the application to the best of their ability in their own words. Interviews will take place in August at Brisbane City Hall.

Complete Streets Safety Committee Meeting at BES
Thanks to everyone who joined the Complete Streets Safety Committee last Wednesday for their special meeting at BES to discuss improvements related to the 2026 Safe Routes to School Travel Fellowship Grant in San Mateo County. This program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County, the San Mateo County Transportation Authority, and San Mateo County Public Health, Policy, and Planning. We are excited to partner with local schools to implement projects that encourage walking, biking, and rolling-helping reduce vehicle trips, improve safety, and support climate and health goals and appreciate all the engagement thus far with the Brisbane School District and parent community! Special shout out to Parks and Rec for their support in offering extended childcare through Club Rec for the duration of the meeting.

2026 Mental Health Walk for Awareness
May 9, 2026 was a beautiful day in Brisbane where approximately 80 participants joined Parks and Recreation for their 3rd Annual Walk for Awareness! Every year this event grows in numbers, a testament to the spirit of Brisbane and how we continually show up for one another. After the walk, the fun moved across the street to the Community Park where there was music playing, a community art piece to contribute to, vendors, mini golf, YAC interactive fun, the Grand Stand, and more! See below for all the participating vendors and activities:
- SPCA outreach and Pet Assisted Therapy (PAT) Team (therapy dogs)
- Mini Golf
- 1AMSF (art)
- Brisbane’s own: Crafty Me
- Brisbane Library
- Mister Softee Truck
- San Mateo County and Felton Institute Peninsula Suicide Prevention (PSP)
- Grand Stand
- Lawn Games / Interactive A-frames with YAC
And if you missed the walk but want to still add to the interactive boards, you can do so at the Pool (How Are You Feeling, Doodle Blogs, and Break the Stigma), City Hall (Grateful Hearts, Support Beads), and the Sunrise Room (Breathe & Reset). The Parks and Rec Office on the second floor of City Hall also has a small amount of medals left along with YAC's mental health bookmarks! Come by and grab them before they're gone!

Grand Stand Video from Day in the Park
Those who came to the Park after the Mental Health Walk saw the Grand Stand booth set up, but it made its debut at last year's Day in the Park. This Age Friendly intergenerational offering was designed to foster connection across generations through engaging conversation, shared wisdom, and community storytelling. Using thoughtful prompts, the booth encourages warm, reflective dialogue between community members of all ages. Here’s a look back at the booth at last year’s Day in the Park event. Thank you to Tom Seawell for sharing his excellent cinematography and Noah Kellstedt for editing this video.

Alvarado-San Benito Stairway in the News
We wanted to share a piece from non-profit Palo Alto Online which provided a great overview of the new 'Sea to Stars' landmark in San Mateo County and the artists behind it. They captured some great photos, including one of Thuy getting her steps in, as well!
