WEEK 10, TERM 3, 22 SEPTEMBER 2023
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
This week has been focused on Year 12, and celebrating their immense contribution to the school over six years. There were many class parties on Monday. On Tuesday Year 12 received their P and C Tote Bags designed by Rachelle Wu (Year 11) and Cathy Yan (Year 12) and also their P and C Owls which were signed by students and teachers. Also on Tuesday the prefects began finalising the running sheet for the Year 12 Final Concert including all Year 12 decorating the hall and assisting with the organisation of the concert. The concert commenced at lunch time on Wednesday with Years 10, 11 and 12 in the hall and Years 7, 8 and 9 watching the broadcast in their P4 classrooms. We have so many talented students and it is always great to see (and hear) how our students respond to their peers when they perform. The Teachers Act almost stole the show but the final performance from the Year 12 band Meraki was the highlight. It was a great way for Year 12 to finish their final full school day prior to their Graduation Day on Thursday. A full report and photos of the Year 12 Graduation Activities on Thursday 21 September will be in the next edition of the Torch. We wish Year 12 all the best for the start of the written HSC exams next term.
On Friday 15 September we said farewell to Dr Susan Green (Deputy Principal and previously Head Teacher English) who has been promoted to Principal Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. Dr Green has developed and implemented many initiatives at Hornsby while Deputy Principal that have led to improved student outcomes in a number of academic and wellbeing programs. We thank Dr Green for her leadership of learning and teaching and we wish her all the best for her well-deserved leadership role as Principal at Newtown. Well done Dr Green!
We also farewelled Ms Mel Court-Gold our Student Support Officer (SSO) who has taken up a a role at Gosford Hospital In-patient Counselling Service. Ms Court-Gold has transformed our delivery of student wellbeing programs and set a very high benchmark for future SSOs. We also farewelled Mrs Pauline Zuffrey (Visual Arts) who has taken up the Student Support Officer role at James Ruse High School. We wish Ms Court-Gold and Mrs Zufferey all the best in their new roles.
I wish you all a happy holiday and I look forward to the return of the students and staff on Monday October 9 in Summer Uniform. Year 11 are allowed to wear their new jerseys from Term 4.
PREFECT INDUCTION
YEAR 9 PASS Games- Staff v Students Basketball Game
Another exciting 9PASS game took place on Wednesday, 30th of August (week 7)! The competition was an enticing battle between the teachers and students, in a fast paced game of basketball. It lasted the entirety of lunch, and the majority of the student (and some of the staff!) body gathered to cheer on the two teams. The game was intense, but both teams put on a great performance. Unfortunately, the student team was overpowered by the teachers, with the final score adding up to 22-8 (the students probably let them win…)
Overall, the competition proved to be one of the most entertaining events that occurred during week 7, providing a distraction from the stress of exams, and boosting school spirit, morale, and overall awareness for the importance of physical activity in students’ and teachers’ lives. Basketball is a game people of all ages can enjoy, and we hope to have displayed to everyone playing in the match and observing that physical activity can be fun, and we hope everyone is feeling a little bit more inspired to get a bit more active!

YEAR 9 PASS Games Student v Staff Netball Game
On the 1st of September, we held a student vs staff netball game as part of our 9PASS Lunchtime activity initiative. This aimed to promote active lifestyles amongst students and people of all ages in order to remain healthy. It was an enjoyable event, whether you were a player on the court or a spectator watching some of your favourite teachers and friends battle it out. There was much enthusiasm and a little competitiveness from both sides.
It was wonderful to see so many people take interest in participating and turning up. The crowds really created an encouraging atmosphere with support for their favourite teams along with the motivating music and commentary. The match was greatly successful in getting many players active and the audience invested in physical activity. Congratulations to the teachers with a win of 4-3!

YEAR 7 TARONGA ZOO EXCURSION
Year 7 students share their Taronga Zoo Excursion experiences.
I liked watching the giraffes eat their food, as you can see their long neck coming to use. The giraffe’s neck and height enable them to reach food resources that are out of reach for other animals. An animal behaviour I found interesting was the seals. They mostly listened to their trainer but sometimes were cheeky and just wanted to relax and play around. An interesting fact I learned during the seal presentation was that their front flipper’s bone structure was the same as human hands. - Leila Zheng 7K
The Taronga Zoo excursion was an enjoyable and useful experience. It enhanced our understanding of adaptations and classifications. Walking past the enclosures allowed us to witness and learn how the animals behaved. For example, our team learned that koalas sleep for approximately 20 hours a day! We also attended the seal show which was extremely entertaining. The crowd laughed away, whilst the animal keepers and the seals were demonstrating astonishing tricks and turns. I especially find Pepper, the Californian seal very amusing. I was shocked when the keeper explained how the seals’ front flippers have a very similar structure to our hands. All in all, this was an enlightening and valuable trip. - Isha Balaji 7X
When we went to Taronga Zoo I learnt about how there are several different adaptations that an animal can have, for example, a giraffe has a long tongue to bend back thorns on branches to enable them to eat leaves, but they also have a long neck that allows them to reach the fresher leaves in the tops of savannah trees. It was also interesting to see the animals using their brains to work out how to obtain treats hidden in barrels by rolling or pushing them. - Yeha Kim 7T
The entrance of the Sumatran Tigers Enclosure was an aeroplane, where the journey to Sumatra took place. On the plane, a wildlife conservationist was on the screen, explaining how endangered these majestic creatures were and how their habitats were being logged, ending in extinction, etc. Along with that, the aviaries which held a variety of colourful and venust aves were enticing to see. It was also a challenge to distinguish and find the birds there. - Zinat Abdullah 7K

Operation Art Winner 2023 Armory Gallery
Every year schools across New South Wales are invited to participate in Operation Art, an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. This year 738 artworks from schools around the state were submitted. There were ten judges this year and one being Archibald winner 2022 the amazing Indigenous artist Blak Douglas.
Four students’ artworks were nominated to participate this year, including, Simran Pandey “Abstract Architectural Composition” pencil drawing, Faith Lai “European Autumn” watercolour painting, Merrian Liu “Halcyon Garden” watercolour painting and Violet Cho “French Horn” pastel on kraft.
Simran Pandey is to be congratulated for her work, as it was the best in the state for 2023 and deemed the overall winner. The artwork also will feature in the top 50 and will be exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW early next year. It will then go on tour around NSW regional galleries later in 2024 and will eventually be part of the permanent collection at Children's Hospital at Westmead. The all artworks are currently being exhibited at the Newington Armory, Homebush, 16 September – 29 October 2023.
Hundreds of people attended the official opening and awards ceremony on Saturday16 September 2023 at the Armory – there was even the NSW Public Schools Millennial marching band playing. Here, Hornsby Girls was officially acknowledged for our continued outstanding participation in Operation Art over several years. Unfortunately, Simran was unable to attend this ceremony due to her little brother’s birthday – a wonderful celebration in itself.

HARMONY DAY POSTER COMPETITION
The Harmony Day Poster Competition is open to school students in all schools in Australia. This year’s theme was: “Living in Harmony”.
Sisters, Kirsty Kang (Year 8) and Riah Kang (Year 10), entered this year’s competition. It was a hotly contested competition with over 4000 entries. Congratulations must go to Kirsty who was regional runner up. Both artworks demonstrate Kirsty and Riah’s amazing creative abilities and skills in illustration and composition. A ceremony was held at NSW Parliament House, but unfortunately the kang sisters were unable to attend.
USYDs School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Experience Program
From September 11th to 13th, I was accepted and given the opportunity to be part of the USYDs School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Experience Program that was open to all Year 10 students in NSW.
On the first day, we were given a tour around the beautiful campus which was then followed by our first experiment on forward osmosis membranes for low energy and water separation applications. The following day, I had the opportunity to work with renowned scientists, including Professor PJ Cullen, on an experiment assessing the suitability of a plasma water reactor for effectively degrading dye. This was succeeded by an experiment applying the concept of product reverse engineering (teardown) to assess a product's circular economy suitability. Finally, in the last experiment, we learned about Green Hydrogen production and applied our knowledge to construct a functional Hydrogen fuel cell car.
I am profoundly grateful for this experience and for the chance to collaborate with 14 students from across NSW and amazing professors from the University of Sydney.
I highly encourage next year’s Year 10 students to apply for this program. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime that I will cherish forever.

Year 11 Monologues
Year 11 Drama students performed their assessment monologues for a large and enthusiastic audience of 7-12 students this week. We were dazzled by their control of satire, surrealism, absurdism and comedy. Thank you to the performers, Susani, Rachel, Helen and Hiru for putting on a wonderful show.

YOUTH PARLIAMENT
Earlier in July, I was fortunate enough to represent my electorate as the Y NSW Youth Parliamentarian for Hornsby at the Youth Parliament Sitting Week. Youth Parliament is a program that facilitates over 80 students from a diverse range of NSW electorates, including young people flying in from Wagga Wagga and Tweed.
Over the past 5 months, I worked remotely within the Aboriginal Affairs committee to draft a bill named the Bayala, Ngara Wingara (To Speak, Listen and Think) Bill. The primary recommendation was to implement a First Nations Voice to NSW Parliament. We debated this bill in Parliament House along with bills created by 9 other committees.
Our committee had the largest bill in the program, with 64 clauses detailing functions of the Voice, Annual Engagement Hearings with administrative units, composition of the Voice, Advisory Committees and gender representation.
I was lucky enough to be selected as Lead Refuter for a debate on the Bill of Human Rights. I also spoke for the Women’s Affairs Committee on supporting mothers in the workforce, chaired by the Hon. Jodie Harrison MP. Our cohort was excited to have morning tea with the NSW Governor at Government House and were grateful to learn so much about parliament!

DOVES Student Forum
Two of our SRC representatives, Amaaya Chowdhury and Roselina Zheng, recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in an online Zoom forum organised by the Metro North division of the Department of Student Voices in Education and Schools (DOVES). Their participation allowed them to lend their voices to and raise student concerns with other student advocates in the local district.
The Minister's Student Council, also known as DOVES, was created in 2021, following a request from the NSW Government to develop a formal structure to access student views.
The forum provided a valuable platform for these two students to express their concerns and advocate for positive change within the NSW education system. It also allowed them to interact with students from diverse backgrounds and hear their perspectives on pressing issues. Through this experience, they not only represented our school but also gained a broader understanding of the educational landscape in our state.
Thank you Amaaya and Roselina

National Titration Competition
Gabby Wongso, Bonnie Wang and Hea Singh gathered to compete in the National Titration Competition at UNSW. The competition is divided into two parts. In the first part, the team must individually perform a titration experiment in the lab. The students are given an unknown solution and must determine its concentration by titrating it with a known solution using appropriate laboratory techniques they have practised in the school laboratory. In the second part, the team must perform the calculations necessary to determine the unknown concentration of their sample.
The team have been preparing for this competition in the weeks leading to this on top of preparing for their HSC Trial Examinations. The competition is a day to celebrate their love of Chemistry and to showcase their talents. The competition is also a great opportunity for students to learn from each other and to make new friends. At the end of the day, Gabby Wongso received a gold medal for her outstanding individual performance. Bonnie Wang and Hea Singh also received silver medals. Job well done!
