Dear University community,

  • A broad range of TAMIU degree programs have been ranked in top spots nationwide by BestColleges in its 2023 BestColleges Rankings. Check out the top ranked programs here.
  • TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts continues to offer a variety of events. This week, you can enjoy the Annual Faculty Opening Concert. Next week, the Celebration with Love Concert and a tribute to Laredo and national icon Jovita Idar are scheduled.
  • Mark your calendar for a chance to help your future soar at the Aviation, Aeronautics and Aerospace Recruitment Fair Saturday, Sept. 30. Find out about outstanding career and internship opportunities in this dynamic industry. It’s free of charge and open to all.
  • This week, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety in conjunction with the University Police Department and Physical Plant will conduct Emergency Evacuation Drills.

During these drills, flashing lights and a siren/emergency message will be communicated building-wide. All occupants must:

  1. Evacuate buildings via closest exit.
  2. Head to designated evacuation assembly area.
  3. Only return to buildings when UPD Officer provides “All Clear.”

Drills should last no more than 15 minutes from start to finish. Drill assistants will be wearing high-visibility vests or issued TAMIU uniforms. In preparation for these drills, please consider the following:

  • Familiarize yourself with various exits in the buildings you’re in. Exits are clearly marked with illuminated “EXIT” signs, with pathways to each. Your closest exit may be closer to you than the way you came in.
  • Learn Evacuation Assembly Area location(s). Each campus building has an assigned area to gather away from the building for your and others’ safety.
  • Identify locations of closest fire alarm pull station. These activate the building evacuation alarm and are commonly located near exit doors or ends of hallways.
  • Familiarize yourself with your Building Emergency Coordinator (BEC). Most buildings have at least one BEC that should help during an emergency or evacuation.

Learn more about fire safety and other related resources from the TAMIU Office of Environmental Health and Safety’s Fire & Life Safety page.

Make this an excellent week, Dustdevils!
