Canbury School Newsletter

5th JUNE 2026. ISSUE 403

Head's Welcome

Dear Families, As usual it has been a busy week here. Our Year 10 students braved the elements for a trip to the Hogsmill Nature Reserve with the Science department. In true UK fashion, it absolutely chucked it down for the couple of hours they were outside. I was incredibly proud of how they handled it; they got stuck right into their practical tasks with very little moaning, proving that a bit of rain is no match for Canbury resilience! Today, Year 9 had a very exciting day touring the Houses of Parliament. Do make sure to ask them what they learnt when they get home this evening, I'm sure they will have some interesting stories and facts to share. We also had the absolute pleasure of welcoming a group of prospective Year 5 students to the school this week. It was a lovely moment that prompted some wonderful reflection from our current students. A few of them noted just how "little" the visitors seemed, remembering exactly how scary it felt when they were making the leap to 'big school' themselves. It is always heartwarming to see our students show such empathy and recognise how far they've come. Looking ahead, we have a few short surveys heading your way over the next few weeks. We are actively seeking your input on how we shape the school over the coming year or so. Because we are a small school community, your voice carries enormous weight, so please do take a few moments to fill these in and give us your valued feedback. Thank you all for your continued support through rain and shine. I hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing, and hopefully dry weekend! Mrs Rich Head

What we've been up to

Hogsmill Nature Reserve

Our year 10s had a very rainy but interesting science trip to the Thames Water Hogsmill Nature reserve in Kingston on Tuesday. We were working on quadrants and moving our theoretical knowledge into practical work as part of the GCSE curriculum. We also sheltered a little from the rain in the bird watching hut, with our wonderful host Kristine telling us all about the birds, wildlife and nature around the reserve. We were even lucky enough to spot a rare cetti warbler!

KS4 Boys Football

The KS4 boys had their termly Surrey Inclusive Schools football league at FFC's training ground on Monday this week. The boys had 6 matches in total and finished off with a very respectable record of 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. They came third place in the league and were 2 points off the eventual winners. Everyone in the squad did themselves, and the school, proud. Squad: Lysander, Alfie, Marley, Mason, Ryan, Carl, Remi, Soren & Noah.

Year 9 Art: Altered Portraits

This term, Year 9 art students have been exploring the fascinating theme of altered portraits, focusing their initial skills on detailed eye studies. To build up their technical confidence, students have been learning how to use line work, depth, and colour to create realistic and expressive eyes. This foundational work is preparing them to manipulate and distort traditional portraiture as the project progresses. The classes have shown great focus and precision so far, and we look forward to seeing how they develop these eye studies into their final, altered portrait pieces.

Year 7 Art: Cakes & Confectionery

This term, Year 7 art students have been exploring the theme of cakes and confectionery through the work of contemporary artists Sarah Graham and Nicola McBride. Students have been comparing Graham’s large-scale, vibrant oil paintings of retro sweets with McBride’s highly detailed ballpoint pen drawings of iconic wrappers. Inspired by these techniques, the classes are learning how to capture reflections, blend colours smoothly, and master precise mark-making. The students are producing some fantastic work, and we look forward to displaying their finished pieces in soon.

National Donut Day

Staff celebrated National Donut Day with some delicious Polish Donuts today! Thank you Ms Chorazyczewska for ordering and Mr Rush for collecting them.
