Tornado Bass Fishing 2023-24 Season Preview

The King University bass fishing team will look for another successful year, led by first year head coach David Tolbert, who returns after being part of the first ever Tornado bass fishing team.

2022-23 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Tornado competed at numerous events, including the Major League Fishing National Conference event, which was won by Landon Lawson and Hunter McClaskey
  • King had boats compete at a national championship event for the second straight year, with McClaskey and Lawson hauling in 12 pounds, seven ounces worth of fish.

TYLER ALTIZER

  • Career-best weight of 27 pounds, 10 ounces
  • Career-high finish of 10th came at Lake Guntersville
  • Three career top-15 finishes

DYLAN THOMSON

Jr. | Shady Valley, Tenn.

  • Three career top-15 finishes
  • Career-best weight of 27 pounds, 10 ounces

LANDON LAWSON

Sr. | Duffield, Va.

  • Part of the first King tandem to win a tournament, winning the Major League Fishing College series at Smith Mountain Lake
  • Finished 2nd at the Abu Garcia College Fishing National Championship with a total weight of 40 pounds, three ounces

MADDY PHIPPS

Sr. | Richlands, Va.

  • Career-best weight of 20 pounds, seven ounces
  • Caught nine fish at the Abu Garcia College Fishing National Championship, totaling 16 pounds, five ounces

MCKINLEY WAGNER

So. | Nolensville, Tenn.

  • Caught two fish at the Major League Fishing National Conference event, catching two fish for a total weight of four pounds, 10 ounces

HEAD COACH

David Tolbert

Tolbert was named just the second coach in King bass fishing history in Feb. 2023. A member of the first bass fishing team in 2019-20, Tolbert still fishes competitively, having won more then a dozen tournaments in 2021. Tolbert graduated from King in 2021 with a Business Administration degree.
