September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide campaign launched by FEMA in 2004 to encourage Americans to take simple, proactive steps to be ready for emergencies. This year’s theme is “Preparedness Starts at Home” – a reminder that the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe during a disaster is to start planning today.

Here in Lake Elsinore, we know how quickly emergencies can strike—whether it’s wildfires, flooding, power outages, or earthquakes. Being prepared doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. It comes down to four key actions you can take today:

1. Know the Risks

Emergencies can happen anywhere, but certain disasters are more common in specific regions. Home fires, power outages, and floods can happen across the country. The first step to being prepared is understanding the types of emergencies most likely where you live. Once you know the risks, you can take practical steps—such as signing up for Wireless Emergency Alerts, downloading the FEMA App, or keeping a NOAA Weather Radio on hand—to make sure you and your family receive timely, reliable information. You can also sign up for Riverside County’s emergency alerts at RivCoReady.org to receive local updates directly.

2. Make a Plan

Disasters rarely happen when it’s convenient, and your family may not be together when one strikes. Creating a family emergency plan ensures everyone knows how to connect, where to meet, and what to do in different scenarios. Write down important contacts, including medical providers, insurance information, and emergency numbers, and share the plan with everyone in your household.

  • Decide on a safe meeting place both near your home and outside your neighborhood.
  • Practice a fire escape plan—remember, you may have less than two minutes to get out once an alarm sounds.
  • Don’t forget pets and loved ones with special needs when making your plan.

In Lake Elsinore, evacuation routes may vary depending on the situation, so pay attention to directions from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Cal Fire, or City officials if you are told to evacuate. Having these details figured out ahead of time can reduce stress and confusion when seconds count.

3. Build a Kit

When an emergency happens, you may need to shelter in place or evacuate quickly. Having an emergency supply kit means you’ll have what you need to stay safe and comfortable until help arrives. A basic kit should include water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, and important documents. Think beyond the basics too—items like extra glasses, infant care supplies, pet food, or backup chargers for electronics can make a big difference.

Consider putting together both a home kit and a “go-bag” you can grab quickly if you need to leave. Preparing now can save you time, money, and stress later.

4. Get Involved

Preparedness doesn’t stop with your household—your community plays a big role too. By staying informed and working together, we all become more resilient. The upcoming Emergency Preparedness Fair is the perfect opportunity to take that next step. You’ll be able to meet our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), learn about the City’s emergency plans, and discover local resources for training such as first aid and CPR. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors so we can all build a safer, stronger Lake Elsinore together.
