SJSU CELEBRATES FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH - UPCOMING EVENTS
October marks the observance of Filipino American History Month, initially established in 1988 by the Filipino American National Historical Society. This month is dedicated to honoring the rich history, cultural heritage, and remarkable achievements of Filipino- Americans, who constitute the second-largest Asian American community in the United States. The significance of celebrating this in October lies in the historical landing of the "Luzones Indios" from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza on Oct. 18th, 1587 at what is known as Morro Bay, California, marking their first recorded presence in the U.S.
Akbayan, is a student organization at SJSU, that strives to increase knowledge of the Pilipinx-American culture and share the beauty of the heritage. Akbayan started out with a group of Pilipinx/Pilipinx-American college students from SJSU gaining consciousness about their heritage and culture. The group was inspired to create an organization based on the Pilipinx/Pilipinx-American culture. In 1976, Akbayan was born. Initially, it started out as a social group where Pilipinx individuals had a chance to meet new people. Over the years, it has evolved to become an organization concerned with cultural and community concepts as well.
Check out these upcoming events Akbayan is hosting at SJSU:
