Miss Handford's Reflections
This week’s theme, ‘Release’, feels particularly fitting as we reach the final week of term. Not, I hope, because anyone in our community identifies with the definition of ‘being set free from confinement’! I certainly would not want our students or staff to see school as something they simply endure until the holidays arrive. However, the summer break does offer us all a welcome sense of release and a chance to step away from the routines of lessons and learning, from the structure of the school day, and perhaps from quite so much homework. Activities Week has certainly provided opportunities for that release. Our Year 7 residential visit to Lower Grange Farm gave students the chance to connect with one another, challenge themselves and, most importantly, have fun. When I visited on Tuesday morning, the tomahawk throwing seemed a particularly effective way to release some of the stresses and strains that inevitably build up over a busy school year! Likewise, the Year 8 and Year 9 trip to the aqua park was filled with laughter and smiles. The House water fight last week was another chance for everyone to let their hair down and enjoy themselves and judging by the 1000+ water balloons used, it was certainly a great success. For our Year 11 and Upper Sixth students, the feeling of release is perhaps even more significant. Having worked so hard throughout the year in preparation for their GCSEs and A-levels, waking up each morning without revision hanging over them must feel as though a weight has been lifted. Yet what has been particularly striking is that, despite enjoying their newfound freedom since finishing their examinations, many have chosen not to step away from school entirely. I have been genuinely impressed by the number of students who have continued to give their time to support our community. Whether helping in the library, assisting within the English department, participating in musical events or volunteering in the Prep School, they have demonstrated tremendous generosity and commitment. It has been wonderful to see so many of our older students continuing to contribute over the past few weeks. A testament to the strength of our school community. As we move into the summer holidays, I hope that all our families are able to pause, relax, recharge and enjoy valuable time together, ready to return refreshed for the year ahead. At the same time, let us not forget the many staff who continue to work tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the summer, ensuring that everything is ready for the new academic year. Their dedication often goes unseen, but it is deeply appreciated. Thank you for all that you do. As always, I finish this term feeling immensely proud of our students and all they have achieved. I wish everyone a happy, restful and enjoyable summer break.

Speech Day
Speech Day is one of the highlights of the Kent College calendar, a special occasion to celebrate the achievements, growth and resilience of our students, while reflecting on another successful year as a school community. This year's celebration recognised the outstanding accomplishments of our students across academic, sporting, creative and co-curricular life, as we proudly presented awards and celebrated the dedication and hard work that underpin every success. We also bid a fond farewell to our 2026 Leavers, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of exciting new opportunities. Lizzy's inspiring speech encouraged our students to embrace challenges, pursue their ambitions with determination and make the most of every opportunity as they begin the next stage of their own journeys. It was a privilege to have her with us to celebrate such a memorable occasion.
Sports Day
Sports Day was a fantastic success, despite the very hot weather. The students showed incredible enthusiasm, determination and resilience throughout the day, taking part in a wide range of events and cheering one another on. It was wonderful to see such excellent teamwork, sportsmanship and encouragement from everyone involved. Every student should be proud of the effort they put in, whether they were competing on the track, taking part in field events, or supporting their teammates from the sidelines. The atmosphere was full of excitement, with families and staff helping to make the day such a memorable occasion. Victrix Ludorum Award Winners Awarded to the student with the outstanding overall performance at Sports Day in each year group.
- Year 7: Fearne H
- Year 8: Rosie T
- Year 9: Grace M
- Year 10: Lily A
Congratulations to Danes, who were crowned this year's Sports Day champions after a series of impressive performances across the events. Saxons were close behind, finishing just a few points short after an outstanding effort. It was a closely contested competition, with all of the teams demonstrating great determination and perseverance until the very end.
Celebrating Sporting Excellence at Our Annual Sports Dinner
Our annual Sports Dinner was a fantastic evening of celebration, bringing together students, staff, families and coaches to recognise another exceptional year of sporting achievement at Kent College. The event celebrated the commitment, determination and sportsmanship demonstrated by our students throughout the year, both in competition and in training. From individual successes to team accomplishments, the evening reflected the passion and dedication that define sport at Kent College. Guests enjoyed an evening of reflection as we looked back on memorable fixtures, tournaments and performances across a wide range of sports. Awards were presented to students who have excelled through their talent, perseverance, leadership and commitment, recognising not only outstanding performances but also the values that underpin success both on and off the field. The Sports Dinner also provided an opportunity to thank our dedicated coaches, teachers and support staff, whose encouragement and expertise continue to inspire our students to achieve their full potential. Their commitment plays a vital role in fostering a culture of excellence and enjoyment in sport. Congratulations to all of this year's award winners and to every student who has represented Kent College with pride throughout the year. We look forward to another exciting season of sporting success ahead.
An Evening of Musical Celebration
The music dinner was a fun, moving and joyful event where we celebrated our many wonderful events this year; House Music, the African Drumming workshop, the KS3 concert, the Carol Service, Anything Goes, Under the Sea, Voices of the Deep, Finding Nemo and the magical black tie Opera Gala. Awards were given to all students and staff and our leavers were fully celebrated. It ended with an open mic session where everyone performed something. What a year we have had in music and an equally amazing year to come! Thank you so much to the amazing catering department who provided such gorgeous food, including a piano cake.
Activities Week
This Monday and Tuesday, we celebrated Activities Week with an exciting programme of experiences both in and beyond the classroom. Our Year 7 students enjoyed a magical Harry Potter-themed art lesson before heading off on their residential trip to Lower Grange Farm, where they took part in a range of outdoor adventures and team-building activities. Years 8 and 9 kicked off the week with an action-packed day of watersports on Monday. On Tuesday, Year 8 completed their Duke of Edinburgh Award activities, while Year 9 put their investigative skills to the test during a CSI-themed day. The experience included working alongside sniffer dogs and hearing from their handler, giving students a fascinating insight into the world of detection and forensic investigation. Meanwhile, our Year 10 and Year 12 students spent the week gaining valuable real-world experience through their work experience placements, developing new skills and exploring potential future career paths. It has been a fantastic Activities Week, filled with adventure, creativity, challenge and opportunities for personal growth. A huge thank you to all the staff and host venues who made these memorable experiences possible.
Swimming Success
On Saturday, Annabelle in Year 8 and Zoe in Year 9 travelled to Sheffield to compete at the Swim England Combo Cup for Artistic Swimming. As the final competition of the season, the event brought together the country's top artistic swimming clubs. Annabelle impressed the judges with a captivating Doctor Who-themed routine, while Zoe delivered a powerful and dynamic feminist-inspired performance. Both girls represented the school with exceptional skill and determination, achieving fantastic results. Annabelle finished in an impressive 9th place, while Zoe secured an outstanding bronze medal, finishing 3rd overall. Congratulations to both swimmers on their remarkable achievements and for ending the season on such a high.
Gymnastics Success at the Pegasus Invitational
Our gymnasts delivered outstanding performances at the Pegasus Invitational last weekend. Congratulations to Sophie C in Year 7 who secured 1st place and won the Highest Vault Award, following an impressive 5th-place finish at the Regional Championships the previous weekend. Jendayi M in Year 8 also performed brilliantly, achieving a fantastic 3rd-place finish, while Zarina D in Year 9 celebrated a remarkable milestone by winning 1st place in her first competition at this level. We are incredibly proud of all our gymnasts for their achievements and the commitment they continue to show in training and competition.
Year 10 Trip To Dorset
Year 10 Geographers had a fantastic trip to Dorset last week. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, making the most of every opportunity to enjoy swimming, coasteering, paddleboarding and of course, a few well-earned ice creams! We even managed to fit in plenty of Geography revision along the way. The students were outstanding throughout the residential, embracing every activity with enthusiasm, resilience and a real sense of adventure. They were excellent ambassadors for the school, supporting one another and making the most of every learning opportunity. Our favourite quote from the trip came from Iris, who said, "I feel like I am in a Geography textbook." That perfectly captured what we hoped the students would gain from the experience. By exploring the spectacular coastline on foot, studying coastal landforms up close and experiencing the coastal environment from the water, Geography came to life beyond the classroom. We hope the memories and first-hand experiences from the trip will stay with them as they continue their studies and prepare for their GCSE examinations.
Bastille Day
Last week, the French Department celebrated Bastille Day with a special quiz for Senior School students. From Monday onwards, students answered two questions each day about the French Revolution, helping them explore the key events of this pivotal period in history and learn about the influential historical figures who shaped it.
Congratulations to the winner, Lucy S in Year 7 and our runners up, Ava B in Year 9, Eve G in Year 9, Hebe T in Year 7 and Sophie W in Year 10.
Student Voice
My name is Sarah, I’ve been at KC since I was nine and this year, I’m lucky enough to be Head Girl. Currently I am studying Music, English Literature and Classics at A-level. As Head Girl, I work alongside the Deputy Head Girls, all the School Officers and Prefects as well as the staff to help arrange and run activities, events and lots of meeting around the school. My job is to help the school be as welcoming, inclusive, enthusiastic and as friendly as possible. This term has been an amazing start to the role and I’ve been involved in all sorts of events. Along with the officer team I helped with KC Eurovision as well as with the interviews and selections of the new House Reps. I’ve been helping with the Danes’ house assemblies, helping choose our goals for this year's Student Voice group alongside the Deputy Head Girls, I’ve given a speech to prospective parents at open morning. Currently I’m working with the House Captains and newly appointed House Reps to plan Sports’ Day. We’ve had so many events this term and I can’t wait to see what the Autumn Term brings.

Mrs Fiona Fryer, Head of Physics
I am delighted to be joining Kent College as Head of Physics from September 2026. Since beginning my teaching career in 2003, I have taught Physics in three schools and led the Physics department in two of them. One of the aspects of my role that I am most passionate about is inspiring girls to enjoy Physics and achieve their full potential at GCSE and A-level. I believe that every student can succeed in Physics when they are challenged, supported and encouraged to be curious about the world around them. I look forward to bringing my experience, enthusiasm and commitment to Kent College, helping students to enjoy their lessons, develop confidence in their abilities and discover the excitement of this fascinating subject.
Mr Shahab Khoram , Mathematics Teacher
My name is Shahab Khoram and I am excited to be joining Kent College as a Mathematics Teacher. I graduated from the University of Warwick in 2021 with a degree in Physics with Mathematics. After spending two years working as a Risk Consultant, I realised my heart was in teaching and inspiring young people, not in staring at a computer screen all day. I hope that my classroom will be a place where every student feels valued, supported and enjoys learning mathematics. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm for Mathematics and building strong relationships with students, colleagues and parents. I love sport; outside school I stay fit by regularly playing football and badminton. I look forward to meeting everyone in September.

I'm really looking forward to helping share the brilliant things happening across the school with students, parents and the wider community. I'm excited to become part of the community at Kent College Pembury and I am eager to get to know everyone soon.
Promotions
We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the following members of staff on promotions to new roles from September 2026.
Mrs Elizabeth Hayes, EPQ Coordinator
Having started Kent College as a Classics teacher in 2009 and taken on numerous roles throughout the school, such as House Tutor in J&O, and Head of Classics (my current role), I am looking forward to taking on the new challenge of EPQ Coordinator. The research and analytical skills I have developed throughout my career in Classics will be a huge benefit to my aiding students on their research journeys. My time running a PGCE in Classics at the University of Sussex saw me support trainee teachers through masters level assignments and I look forward to doing the same with the EPQ. I am particularly excited to see all the different projects the students will design and complete.
Mrs Becky Leach, Head of Mathematics
I am delighted to be taking on the role of Head of Mathematics from September. Having always been passionate about making Mathematics accessible, engaging and enjoyable for all students, I look forward to leading the department, supporting colleagues and helping every learner develop confidence and success in the subject.
Mrs Mimi Osew, Head of Business, Economics and Marketing
I am delighted to take on the role of Head of Business, Economics and Marketing from September and look forward to building on the department's strengths and successes. I would also like to thank the outgoing Head of Department, Mr Miles Muttitt, for his support and the work he has done for the department. This September marks the launch of our new Pearson BTEC Level 3 Marketing course, a vocational qualification recognised by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). The course equips students with practical marketing knowledge and skills that are highly valued by universities and employers. We are also looking forward to an exciting start to the Autumn Term, with a Business/Economics Masterclass led by Ian Marcouse, the UK's leading Business and Economics author, and A Level examiner, as well as an interactive Marketing Workshop delivered by Xbox UK. These opportunities will give students valuable insights from leading educational and industry professionals and set the tone for another successful year ahead.
Mrs Dee Quigley, Head of Middle School
This September marks my 10th Year at Kent College and the start of an exciting new role as Head of Key Stage 4. I am thrilled to be taking on this position, building on my work in the German Department and more recently, as Head of AIMS, over the past three and a half years. It has been a genuine privilege to work with our Scholars, Exhibition and AIM students and I have loved supporting them as they pursue their ambitions, develop their talents and grow into resilient, enquiring and creative learners. Every student brings their own strengths, interests and individual approaches and it has been wonderful to see them embrace opportunities, achieve success in so many different ways. It has also been wonderful to see confidence developing in our students, which allows them to thrive in life, both here at Kent College and beyond. I am very much looking forward to working with our Year 10 and 11 cohort and helping them to navigate what is a very important stage of their educational lives. With the ASPIRE values that are at the heart of life at Kent College, we will continue to build a community where achievement is celebrated, challenges along the way are supported, and most importantly that every student is encouraged to aspire, contribute positively and reach their full potential.
Miss Phil Webb, Director of Sport (Maternity Cover)
I am really looking forward to be continuing in the excellent job Mr Beck has done during Mrs Hughes’ maternity leave as Director of Sport. It is an exciting time as this September marks an important milestone for the school as we welcome our inaugural cohort of boys. I look forward to working with both our new and existing students to continue developing a sporting programme that offers challenge, opportunity and enjoyment for everyone. Sport plays an important role in school life, whether through participation, competition, or simply encouraging healthy habits and teamwork. I am looking forward to building on the strong foundations already in place, supporting students of all abilities and working with colleagues to ensure that sport continues to be a positive and rewarding part of the Kent College experience.
