The Blast City Manager Dennis' Weekly Update | March 12, 2025

Happy Women's History Month, Brisbane!

At last Thursday’s City Council meeting, Brisbane School District Superintendent Nancy Bui was on-hand to accept the Council’s Proclamation and was joined by other women leaders in the room for a photo. The other photo was from Tuesday’s 3rd Grade field trip to City Hall, where Ms. Carr was presented with a bouquet of flowers from Mayor Lentz. We encourage all members of our community to reflect on and celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of women in education, leadership, and beyond, as they continue to inspire the world and build bridges to a more inclusive tomorrow.

3rd Grade Field Trip Pics

Last Tuesday, Special Election Day, we welcomed Ms. Carr's 3rd grade students / future voters to City Hall and the Annex where they toured the various departments (led by Matt, Ingrid, and Officer Puppet!), played a round of Hangman with Parks and Rec, learned that the Finance Dept. is like a "giant piggy bank", and of course saw the Police motorcycle and Engine 81 up close. A highlight many noted in their Thank You letters and Field Trip Reflections, was meeting the Mayor (and getting to BE Mayor for 10 seconds). This entailed them answering the question, "What would you do if you were Mayor?" and of course, giving that gavel a nice bang or two before leaving their seat on the dais!

We're glad you got to visit City Hall and look forward to seeing you all around here again soon!

Recap of 70 Old County Open House at the Library

Wayfinding sign on Monterey, right outside the Library's Community Room

Approximately 50 people came through the Library's Community Room on Saturday as part of the planning and public engagement process kick-off meeting for the former Bank of America site.

Saturday's open house had a great turnout, and we loved seeing all the interaction between community members as they talked about what they hoped to see one day at the site.

In the coming weeks, we'll share a report summarizing the ideas left on the boards, which were filled with sticky notes by noon!

Stay tuned for more engagement opportunities, such as a pop-up at the former Bank of America site in the coming months along with a community survey.

New Fire Hazard Severity Maps Released

On February 24, 2025, CAL FIRE released the 2025 Local Responsibility Area (LRA) Fire Hazard Severity Maps. State law requires CAL FIRE, in coordination with the Office of the State Fire Marshal to periodically update these maps and severity zones.

Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps evaluate “hazard,” not “risk.” “Hazard” is based on the physical conditions that create a likelihood and expected fire behavior over a 30 to 50-year period. Properties are categorized as Moderate, High, or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones based on terrain, vegetation, fire history, climate conditions, and ember cast computer modeling. Insurance companies use their own sophisticated risk models to make decisions about property insurance.

Residential areas in the City of Brisbane have been designated in the “Moderate” category.

Local governments are required to adopt, by ordinance, updated Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) in our jurisdiction within 120 days of being published. We anticipate these maps will be adopted sometime in early June.

Sandbags Available at City Hall for Brisbane Residents

Pre-filled sandbags are available in the City Hall parking lot, in a parking spot mid-way down the lot underneath a tarp to keep them dry. Please replace the tarp after picking up your bags. 10-bag limit, Residents only. Pre-filled sandbags are not for industrial or commercial businesses.

The storm continues to be predicted in the moderate category, with periods of heavy rain, slight chance of thunderstorms and small hail, strong gusty winds, and beach hazards.

Additional rainfall is expected Friday into the early part of next week, with the current forecast for Friday through Sunday calling for similar rainfall totals to those from the Tuesday night-Thursday system. There is also a risk for high surf and other beach hazards on Sunday and Monday, with an incoming very high swell coming into the waters. There is still some room for the rain totals to fluctuate over the next few days. Stay tuned as the forecast becomes more refined at weather.gov/bayarea.
