Year 3

It has been another fantastic week in Year 3 and the children have all been working incredibly hard across the curriculum. In English, they have continued developing their legends by introducing the problem within their narrative as well as writing resolutions to end their stories effectively. They explored a range of writing techniques to enhance their work, including using paragraphs, fronted adverbials, “show not tell," powerful verbs to engage the reader and similes to add vivid descriptive detail. The children also spent time reviewing and editing their writing to further improve and refine their ideas.  In layered reading lessons, the children continued exploring London Through Time. They compared modern-day London with earlier versions of the city and practised using skimming and scanning skills to locate evidence within the text. They went on to learn how to create mind maps to organise information and support their explanations and justifications.  In maths, the children have been learning about statistics. They interpreted tables and bar charts and enjoyed creating their own charts using class data. They also explored sorting and classifying information using Venn diagrams, focusing on number properties such as multiples of 3 and 4, as well as odd and even numbers.  In science, building on last week’s learning about pollination and fertilisation, the children investigated how seeds are formed. They thoroughly enjoyed closely observing different fruits to identify and compare the seeds inside. The children explored how seeds can vary in size, shape and position, and engaged thoughtfully in discussions about their findings.  A message for next week: We will be starting our DT project. On Friday, the children will complete some research into toys with moving mechanisms. If possible, it would be wonderful if your child could bring in a toy with moving parts, such as a pop-up toy, pulley toy, or wind-up toy. There is no pressure to bring something in, but any contributions would be greatly appreciated!  We hope you all have a lovely and restful weekend.

Year 4

We have come to the end of another week where the children have worked diligently and conscientiously.  In English lessons, we have been working on our oracy and how to perform a playscript in readiness for our upcoming Year 4 performances.  The children have also begun their unit on biographies. We began by identifying the features of a range of biographies about Usain Bolt. In addition to this, the children were introduced to our new Layered Reading text, The Butterfly Lion. Once the main character had been established, the children gave reasons and justifications for the characters' actions. In maths, the focus was on fractions and decimals. The children have identified the place value of digits within decimal numbers and have completed addition and subtraction calculations using fractions with the same denominators. Some children have used their knowledge of multiplication and division to calculate equivalent fractions and fractions of amounts. Other children used their knowledge to solve problems involving fractions and decimals. As historians, the children studied the history of the Ferris wheel. They arranged facts and photos into chronological order and created a timeline to show this information. As artists, we have focused on the work of L.S. Lowry and have examined a range of his paintings and their features. In order to create a Lowry painting of their own, the children have looked in detail at the way he represented people, and have mimicked his style to produce some of their own ‘matchstick figures’.

Year 5

Another busy week in Year 5 has seemed to fly by with exciting and enriching learning opportunities at every turn.  5G and 5A set off to Southend on Wednesday morning to learn about climbing: scaling the dizzy heights with confidence and skill.  It was a great opportunity to build up their strength, resilience and to have a lot of fun!  We might even have some future climbing stars in our midst!  5F and 5N will have their chance to climb in two weeks time.   The classes left behind were set a Mayan maths challenge.  They learnt that the Maya used shells, sticks and stone to represent their numbers in rather a different way from our numerical system.  They demonstrated great resilience and once they’d mastered how to read and write the numbers in Mayan, they thoroughly enjoyed completing calculations and challenges.   In other maths lessons, we have been building on the children’s knowledge of division methods to increase fluency and understanding.  We have practised formal methods, including calculations that result in a remainder.  Then, in the context of a problem, the children had to consider whether the remainder needed to be rounded up or down to fully answer the question.  Further problem solving using division and multiplication was also practised including converting remainders into decimals.   Science this week allowed the children to learn about the rotation of the Earth and how it gives us day and night.  Classes discussed the concept of day and night, explaining how the Earth rotates upon its axis and describing how and when we have day and night. They also considered the different time zones around the world and why these are necessary.   In history lessons, the children have been considering the Mayan civilisation through history.  They created a time line including the Mayan era and then added other significant civilisations from previous studies.  Adding key events within these eras gave the children an opportunity to understand history as a linear context and the fact that it is continually happening.   Linking to our science topic of space, the children have begun to plan and write paragraphs to complete their explanation texts all about black holes.  Using the terms cause and effect, factual information and quite a lot of creative licence, they have thoroughly enjoyed answering a range of scientific questions.

Year 6

As SATs week approaches, the Year 6 pupils have continued to demonstrate a mature and determined attitude towards their learning. We have been extremely impressed by the focus and resilience shown as they complete the final stages of their preparation. In English, pupils have been refining key reading skills alongside consolidating their knowledge of grammar and punctuation. They even took on the challenge of creating their own SATs-style questions, applying the wide range of knowledge and expertise they have developed throughout the year. This proved to be both an enjoyable and highly effective way to deepen their understanding. In Connected Curriculum, pupils have continued their geographical enquiry by researching a chosen location within the United Kingdom. They have begun gathering notes about the most intriguing and significant aspects of their area of study and have started drafting sections of their own knowledge organisers. In science, pupils developed their understanding of how the heart functions and how blood is transported around the body. This learning was approached through a range of engaging activities and practical explanations. Many pupils also had the exciting opportunity to use virtual reality headsets to investigate the structure and function of the heart more closely. If your child’s class has not yet experienced this, it is likely to form part of their upcoming science learning. As always, we are incredibly proud of the effort, positivity and perseverance shown by the Year 6 pupils and know they will continue to approach the weeks ahead with confidence and determination.

Online Safety

Neurodivergent children are often drawn to technology, so early, supported experiences online are key. This guide explores how adults can model positive digital behaviour, set age-appropriate limits and create open, judgement-free conversations about online safety. It also highlights the importance of balancing screen use with offline activities to support wellbeing and development. It also unpacks emerging challenges, including AI-generated content and the blurred lines between real and simulated interactions. With clear, practical advice on boundaries, critical thinking and safe communication, this guide helps educators and families build confidence in supporting neurodivergent children to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.

Year 3/4 Quad Kids

Congratulations to the Year 3/4 Quad Kids team who finished in 3rd place today! Each team competed in a 50m sprint, 400m run, mini howler throw and standing long jump. The points were combined for a team score. There were also individual awards for the top three boys and girls. Max was the champion boy of this event - a magnificent achievement after his 3rd place finish last year. It was a joy to watch the children compete and cheer each other on - including children from other schools too. A great day for West Leigh! Well done, athletes!

Inspirational Person - Sir Ernest Shackleton

We were delighted to receive so many inspiring surfboard designs following last half term’s Showbie Challenge. The entries clearly reflected our Golden Values, and we are impressed with the effort and creativity shown. A small selection of the designs is shared below, but everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves. Prizes have been awarded to all participants — well done! We hope to see more fantastic entries again this half term. This half term, children have been learning about the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton and how he demonstrated the value of integrity during his expedition to Antarctica. When his ship, The Endurance, became trapped in the ice, Shackleton faced an incredibly difficult decision. He could continue pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming the first person to cross Antarctica, or he could abandon the mission to ensure his crew returned home safely. Integrity means doing the right thing — even when it is difficult, even when no one is watching, and even when it costs you something. Shackleton showed true integrity by giving up his dream and choosing people over success. He told his crew, “Our goal now is simple: everyone comes home alive.” Thanks to his leadership and integrity, every member of the Endurance crew was rescued. Showbie Challenge Although Ernest Shackleton did not receive a medal or award for his expedition, his integrity is what made his story truly remarkable. Your challenge is to design an “Integrity Award” that you would present to Shackleton. Your design must include:

  • A title for the award
  • A picture or symbol
  • A short explanation explaining why he deserves it

We can’t wait to see your thoughtful and creative designs! These can be uploaded to Showbie and some blank templates have been saved there to help you if needed.

Attendance

Well done to 5A who achieved the best attendance this week with 98.4%. !
