Microchipping your Dogs and Cats

Apps like NextDoor are filled with posts about lost dogs and cats. An easy and cost-effective solution to prevent losing your pet is microchipping.

When microchipping a pet, a microchip the size of a grain of rice is placed beneath the pet’s skin. This permanent ID can never be removed or become impossible to read. This microchip is registered with a service like “Home Again” and linked to the owner’s cell phone.

If your pet gets lost and is taken to an animal shelter or a veterinarian, they will scan the microchip to read its unique dog or cat ID code. This is the number used by Home Again to identify the pet and retrieve your contact information, which is used to contact you and reunite you with your pet.

The San Gabriel Valley Humane Society offers microchip services for $25. The City of Temple City requires dogs residing in the City over the age of four months to be microchipped. For more information, please visit https://www.sgvhumane.org/microchipping-1 or call (626) 286-1159.
