First Grade Field Trip to Colgate Science Center

First grade students recently took part in an engaging and educational field trip to the Ho Science Center and Ho Tung Visualization Lab and Planetarium at Colgate University. The day began with a welcome from Joe Eakin, who guided students through the experience. Students visited the planetarium, where they explored a virtual tour of the solar system and learned about planets, moons, and stars within the Milky Way galaxy. They also enjoyed a guided tour of the night sky, learning how to identify constellations visible in our area this time of year. Following the planetarium visit, students toured the geology museum with the help of two Colgate University geology students. They explored displays featuring rocks, minerals, and fossils, including Herkimer diamonds—found only in Herkimer, New York. Students also participated in a scavenger hunt and had the opportunity to hold real fossils while learning about Colgate’s fossilized dinosaur egg. The trip provided a hands-on learning experience that sparked curiosity and excitement, with students sharing how much they enjoyed the day. Thank you to the Colgate Science Outreach Program for making this opportunity possible and to Joe Eakin for coordinating the visit.
