Curriculum

EYFS

This term Early years have had lots of fun learning about ICT and exploring the use of robots, the use of technology and how to keep safe when using the internet. To finish the year we had a special afternoon where the children were able to play and learn with the help from little city. The children enjoyed exploring the different role play areas. To finish the school year, we had a graduation and the children received a certificate for all of their hard work! Well done to all of the children for all of their hard work and resilience we hope you have a lovely time in the school holidays!

We absolutely loved our transition day!

Class 1

We have had a very busy half term!

Our focus text in Literacy has been ‘A Bear Called Paddington’. The children have loved learning all about how to make a marmalade sandwich and write instructions of how to do this. We even used our instruction writing to teach the Y5’s how to make them!

In maths, we have been learning about volume, weight, position, and direction. The children have enjoyed putting their learning into context, making their own orange juice, and using instructions to direct each other around a maze.

In Computing, we have been learning about creating our own programs on Scratch Junior. We explored how to create a program through making our own designs and characters. We had so much fun!

In Science, we have been focusing on materials. We enjoyed becoming scientists and carrying out our own science experiments. We investigated materials and their properties through bending, squashing, and pulling everyday materials.

In PD RSHE, we have been focusing on staying safe. We have spoken about what we should do and who we should talk to if we feel uncomfortable or unsafe. We have also discussed why our private parts or private through the Pantosaurus song!

In PE, we have been putting our skills to the test in athletics. Great work class 1!

I am so impressed with the children’s hard work this half term and I am going to miss them all so much. I hope everyone has a fantastic Summer!

Mrs Bud

Class 1/2

Class 1/2 have ended the year with a bang! Another amazing half term of learning and fun.

In Literacy we have read the text ‘The Journey Home’ which focuses on endangered animals trying to find their way home. The children wrote their own retell of the story, focussing on a wide range of vocabulary and punctuation. We have also focused on writing our very own poem about ‘The Owl and the Pussy-cat’. The children enjoyed gathering a range of rhyming word to use in their poems.

In maths, we have been focusing on measures, position and direction and time. The children were fantastic at using mathematical vocabulary to describe position and movement. They really enjoyed programming the Beebots to follow instructions.

Our driver topic this half term has been Computing. The children have built their skills using the ScratchJr app and created their own fun, interactive quizzes as an end outcome.

In Science, we have continued to learn about materials. We have looked at the properties of different materials and grouped materials according to these properties, The children can now identify key properties of materials and discuss how the same propety can apply to more than one material.

In PD RSHE, we have been focussing on safe Relationships ourselves, growing and changing. We have focused on the importance of not keeping unsafe secrets, what safe relationships look like and different parts of our body, including the NHS pants rule.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have taught these wonderful, unique children since I joined in January. It has been such a joy to see them grow and learn together and as individuals. You have all made me very proud and I’ll miss you all so much.

Now rest and relax over summer. Stay safe and have lots of fun.

As the school year comes to end, I just want to say how proud I am of every single one of the children. They really have made me burst with pride!

I hope everyone has an amazing summer break.

Miss Corradini

Class 3

Well, that’s a wrap!

Another year done and dusted, and some great progress and effort has been made along the way. They did an amazing job with their end of year assessments which made me very proud.

The children have been hooked into literacy and LIRA this half term through the myths and legends we have been reading.

In LIRA we have been studying the text Beowulf. We have spent a lot of time thinking about the actions of the character and the mood being created in the text. The children have used the language to create their own image of Grendel and what they think he looks like.

In Literacy we have used the text Arthur and the Golden rope, and the children had a go at writing their own ending to the story. They particularly enjoyed this as some of the Norse Gods they know from the Marvel films were mentioned, allowing them to make an instant connection to the text.

In maths we have looked at the 4 operations, the written methods and word problems. We looked at test questions and techniques. We have gone back over time, and most children are now confident with reading the analogue clock and are developing a stronger understanding of the 12- and 24-hour clock.

Our driver subject this half term has been computing with a focus on animation. The children have really enjoyed this topic and making images move. We started using flip books and an onion skinning technique. We were able to critique our work and say what we needed to do to improve. We then used the ‘I Can Animate’ app and created short animations using stop motion and a set of characters. We have designed and made our own animations and will be adding sounds this week.

In RE we have looked at question 6: How do I and others feel about life and the universe around us? We studied the Hindu story of the Mahabharata and the hidden messages behind the story. The children really enjoyed this story and acted in out in groups. They were able to talk confidently about the story which was quite tricky to understand. In Sikhism we looked further into the Langar and how Guru Amar Das set up the Langar with the idea of equality for all. While looking at the Buddhist religion we considered the 5 precepts and the idea of suffering. The children were able to give their thoughts and opinions on this.

In PE we completed our athletics unit and have been learning how to play rounders as a team game.

RSHE has allowed us to explore ourselves, our feelings and emotions we have when our bodies change as we get older.

In Science we have looked at materials and states of matter, with a focus on solids, liquids and gases. We studied the water cycle and conducted experiments into temperature changes and evaporation.

The confidence your children have gained over the year and the subject knowledge they have developed is wonderful to see.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support throughout this year and wish you all a wonderful summer, with plenty of time to rest and relax.

Miss Gillespie

Class 3/4

Year 3 / 4 Overview Summer 2

You should be extremely proud of your child in Class Year 3 / 4 this year because they have worked so hard. Thank you so much for being a great class.

In literacy, we have focussed on a text called ‘Weslandia’. Children gathered key vocabulary for describing settings and characters. They then applied this when writing their character and setting descriptions for Weslandia.

In LIRA, children have thoroughly enjoyed reading the text, ‘ Varjak Paw’ by SF Said. They have enjoyed applying their alphabetical knowledge when using dictionaries as well as locating evidence in the text to support their views.

In maths, children have revised one and two step word problems involving all four operations. They have also been engaged when using art straws to investigate different angles. In particular, children have been very focussed in translating shapes and have enjoyed drawing regular and irregular shapes.

In science, have enjoyed learning about the changes in the states of matter. They were engaged when observing what happens to chocolate when squeezed in their hands and what happened to orange juice when poured into a rubber glove and placed into the freezer. Children also investigated if puddles evaporate quicker outside or inside.

In topic, children have said that this has been their favourite topic. They loved the hook lesson whereby the children viewed various animations and ate popcorn. The children began by creating their own pencil – flip books which then led to the children creating their own animations using the software, ‘I can animate’.

In Spanish, children have been learning how to say the days of the week and months of the year.

It has been a successful year and I wish all the children to have a safe and well-deserved break. You will all continue to amaze your next teachers.

Thank you, Mr B.

Class 4

I can’t believe that has been a year! What a year it has been! Class 4, have been amazing and it has been wonderful to see all their developments throughout the year. Progression has been made throughout, along with some fantastic memories of the amazing work they have produced. It has been a pleasure teaching them as they are very talented and extremely hard-working. The children have engaged well with the topics this year, and this is due to their passion to extend their knowledge of interesting and fun topics.

In the Autumn one term, the children thoroughly enjoyed creating Maquettes using clay. For many of our class, it was their first time creating a 3D model out of clay. The techniques that students were using really demonstrated their understanding of the learning. The KAWs inspired characters were amazing and the detail that some students added really showed how much they enjoyed the topic. Following this, Class 4 showed their historical understanding when looking at our local history. Class 4 were really engaged into this topic which allowed for students to provide accounts from family members who had been affected by Margaret Thatcher. After many debates and conscience alleys, students could articulate who was to blame for the Battle of Orgreave.

During the first Spring term, all children were engaged in the geography topic ‘surrounding pollution. We began this topic looking at many real-life issues in our world and then we began to learn about where pollution was a serious problem. Following this, students wanted to know who was to blame and what was being done to prevent adding to the pollution. Many methods of prevention were investigated, and we even had some students suggesting their own methods. This serious topic was discussed maturely, and we were able to implement our knowledge into persuasive pieces of writing. In Spring 2, children were excited and very engaged in DT when we created our own catapults. Using drills and saws, we were able to accurately measure and cut wood. Students enjoyed creating their catapults and designing them so that SMYTHS would want to sell. This was definitely a favourite of our class, especially when they got to test their catapults at a target.

In Summer term 1, myself and the children thoroughly enjoyed researching Victorian Britain and the opportunities for children. To engage the students, we had a treasure hunt to find out key dates within the Victorian period. Some students were clearly shocked by the torture that Victorian children endured each day. The poor sanitary conditions, lack of food and education made students want to learn more interesting yet shocking facts. These facts were collated and made into an iMovie that students shared with one another.

In our final topic of Summer 2, we enjoyed computing and have loved using iPads to create short animations. All of our class have engaged thoroughly due to their desire to use their creativity skills in designing backgrounds and characters. Although the animations are short, the students have put many hours into ensuring the movements are smooth. The attention to detail that they have all put in is fantastic, especially when they have added sound effects accurately using iMovie. With their hard work and creativity, it has been a great topic to end this fantastic year on. Whilst topics have had lots of varied outcomes, with lots of amazing memories to cherish, I am super proud of their work in everything, especially TimesTables where we have had some super Multiplication check scores. Throughout Summer term, our understanding of Spanish has been developed and we are now able to use basic commands, as well as some greetings. Our teaching of PD/RSHE has informed students of the importance of staying safe in different contexts and they were able to articulate how they will stay safe; this will be embedded even further as they progress in Year 5. Further real-life scenarios were identified through science and looking at changing states. Students carried out many investigations involving melting and evaporating, and they were able to explain the water cycle. Finally, in RE this term we have analysed the world around us and how this makes us feel. Students have discussed different stories and beliefs from different religions before then identifying key themes and messages. I have thoroughly enjoyed the year and I wish each student the very best of luck, keep up the hard work!

Class 5

This half term in Year 5 we have been doing Computing in our afternoon curriculum sessions - using Tinkercad to create our own 3D models. We have really enjoyed learning how to do this and we have made some amazing creations!

In LIRA and literacy we concentrated on poetry and looked at woodland poems as well as Harry Potter poetry. We wrote our own rhyming poems, which we had fun doing. After poetry we moved onto our next novel in LIRA - Danger at Dead Mans, we are still enjoying reading this book. It is a mystery story.

In maths we have been consolidating our learning and revisiting everything we have done this year. Lots of us have improved our scores in arithmetic and reasoning.

Class 5/6

Well, what a fantastic year we have had in Year 5/6! From discovering King Kong’s footprint to taste-testing Spanish foods, it has been incredible! The children have all made so much progress and have absolutely blown me away with their knowledge and enthusiasm. Their outcomes in assessments has proven that all of their hard work has paid off. They have all proven that they are incredible authors, mathematicians, readers, scientists, historians, ambassadors, technicians and much, much more – you have blown me away!

Autumn term saw Year 5/6 exploring the talents of the great Frida Kahlo, creating inferences of her surrealist paintings and using this as inspiration to create their own surrealism self-portraits. We have some incredible aspiring artists in our class. We shortly moved on to discovering the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, exploring how they conquered including making inferences of artefacts from the Jorvik museum!

Things began to look brighter in Spring where we researched for our Geography topic ‘A Place in the Sun’ and compared continents and countries around the world to give our best advice for the best holiday destinations! We then moved on to arguably one of the most enjoyable topics this year – Gone with the Wind. Children used DT skills such as drilling, hacksawing and creating motors to produce a fully functioning motorised windmill designed for EYFS! The process started as market researchers, taking on board ideas from EYFS children to making these ideas come to life!

The start of Summer term we delved into the history of Black Lives Matter where children were able to use their sources skills to explore inequality throughout history. The children analysed song lyrics from the likes of Elvis Presley as well as being engrossed in the historical stories of activists Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.

In our final half term, we have focused on Computing and Year 5/6 have shown how knowledgeable they are with the app Tinkercad which we have used to create our very own 3d models of Milefield Primary School! We definitely have some future technicians and architects in our class!

You have worked so hard this year and it has definitely paid off! You have made me super proud as your teacher and I know you will go on to do wonderful and exciting things next year!

Class 6

It has been a lovely, memorable year in Year 6 this year and I’m so sad that our year together has come to an end! The progress I have seen this year has absolutely blown me away, we are so proud of each and every child and we know they are going to achieve fantastic things in life! The resilience, hard work and determination we have seen this year has been incredible, the future is bright and I know our Y6’s are going to achieve amazing things in life!

Class 6, I’m so sad that our journey has come to an end but I know you are all so ready for the next steps in life and will absolutely thrive at secondary school- we have future politicians, doctors, teachers, singers, footballers and I know each and every aspiration is achievable. You have made me so proud this year and I cannot wait to hear how successful you have all become in years to come! Don’t forget to come back and visit us! We will miss you so much.
