Immerse yourself in the primal rhythms of the earth at "Drums of the Mother," a profoundly transformative drum making workshop. Here, you will embark on a creative journey to craft a sacred drum, resonating with the spirits of wilderness. As your hands bring to life a unique instrument, you'll forge an intimate bond with the natural world.
"Drums of the Mother" honors age-old traditions, offering you the chance to mold your very own drum from sustainably sourced animal hides and a sturdy maple wood frame. The sounds these drums produce are not just musical notes, but echoes of the animal spirits that bequeath a new life beyond the wild – a life where their essence can sing in harmony with the beat of your heart.
Drums are crafted from animal rawhide, which is carefully laced onto a drum frame with synthetic sinew. I believe that this process gives these animals a new existence, allowing them to share their song through the drum's beat and rhythm. Each drum produces a distinct sound, influenced by the type of hide and its size. They are not only stunning in their transformed state but also infuse life through the heartbeat of the drum.
Join Suzan on a journey to craft your very own Song of the Mother hand drum. This one-day workshop will commence with a ceremonial gathering. Together, we will invoke the directions, share our intentions for the day, and participate in a guided meditation accompanied by the soothing sounds of the drum.
As we embark on the journey of drum making, you will be invited to bring forth your intention for crafting this unique drum. What is your heart's desire on this special day of creation? Take a moment to reflect on these questions as you manifest your drum into existence.
In the early afternoon, we will pause for a quick lunch before returning to finish each exquisite drum. At the end of the day, our group will gather in gratitude, embracing guidance from the spirit. While the drums cure, we will come together to drum, shake rattles, and celebrate the joy of our community. You will also receive instructions on how to care for your drum.
Please remember that all drums must dry for a minimum of 24 hours before they can be played.
Join us at "Drums of the Mother" and experience the unparalleled magic of birthing a drum that sings with the voice of the ancients. This workshop is an invocation of beauty, a tapestry of tradition, and a deeply personal rite of passage into the brotherhood and sisterhood of drum keepers. Welcome the animal spirit into your life through the reverberating pulse of your new sacred drum.
Here are the types of hides and drum sizes available for this drum-making session:
Deer - 14 or 16 inch
The medicine of deer symbolizes a leap into the unknown and is associated with magic. Deer teaches us the significance of gentleness, which encompasses kindness in our words, thoughts, and actions. Its medicine embodies qualities such as active listening, grace, and an appreciation for the beauty of balance. Additionally, it encourages an understanding of survival essentials, the power of gratitude and generosity, the ability to make sacrifices for the greater good, a connection to the woodland goddess, and exploring alternative paths to reach our goals.
Horse - 16 or 18 inch
These hides come from horses that passed away naturally - The medicine of the horse reminds us that regardless of the obstacles we face, we possess the strength to confront them directly and succeed in our quest for personal development. With the horse's spiritual energy guiding us, we gain the bravery to venture beyond our comfort zones.
In numerous cultures, the horse symbolizes the shaman's journey, serving as an animal that carries the healer into a dierent realm of existence.
Elk - 16 or 18 inch
The elk represents strength, speed, and bravery. With its impressive antlers, the elk gracefully navigates through thick vegetation, embodying elegance and beauty. Its presence serves as a reminder to seek comfort in the cycles of life and to appreciate the interconnectedness of all living things. The elk's medicine is believed to empower us to face life's challenges with resilience and courage.
